Geneon and ADV are merging.
Geneon did broadcast many of its anime on TV. The problem was it was primarily on premium channels such as Starz Action that one would normally have to pay for. And not everyone has access to premium channels.profweasel
The largest problem with Geneon has always been that they have had no big money maker. All of the companies have had at least one uber-franchise to help them when times are hard or allow them to take a finical hit. Funimation has had DBZ and FMA, Viz has Bleach and Naruto, Bandai has Gundam, even Media Blaster had Kenshin.
Geneon had several series that could have possibly pulled their bacon out of the fire if they had been marketed or been given a chance. Law of Ueki screamed for being televised and Fighting Spirit(Hajame no Ippo) could have done a run on Adult Swim. Fact is in recent history they didn't have a series with real merchandising power. Merchandising is what makes or breaks series. DVD sales are fine but other products is where the money is really made.

That's interesting to hear about a "strategic alliance." Glad to be able to read some insight about what the roles actually are.

They aren't gonna merge. In fact they weren't really fully merging to begin with. ADV agreed to take over Geneon's marketing and sales division, so Geneon would still produce anime under the name Geneon, just as ADV would still produce under the ADV brand name. Two weeks before the move was set to go off, Geneon laid off most all of its marketing and sales division in preparation for the takeover. Then about a week after that ADV canceled the deal and now Geneon is projecting a $600 million loss by then end of the fiscal year (June 30th, 2008).
I just hope they'll opt for another season of Black Lagoon

Geneon has stopped all sales of currently licensed anime and are trying to get a Sales and Marketing division back within their company since ADV blew off the deal they had to merge the sales division. Also in recent news, ADV had laid-off thirteen workers from multiple divisions of the company.
That's GREAT news in my eyes!
Seeing as I have Anime Network, (channel funded by ADVFilms' works) there's a chance they may be throwing in some of Geneon's licensed works as well!
It's like... I'm getting "the best of both worlds"! Just like Hannah Montana said.

Do people ever read previous posts? @selemental: They are not merging. The odds of Anime Network airing Geneon titles at this point is almost nil.

I'd say good luck with that. I doubt any former employee would want to rejoin a firm which they know could lay them off in an instant (within the legal boundaries of employment laws of course). The feeling of job security isn't there anymore.
That is unless the management can give the laid-off staffs really good reasons for them to change their minds. Better job incentives or employment terms maybe.

Yeah I'd be amazed if Geneon pulls itself out of the hole. The best way for them to make money is sell off the titles they have to TV, and if that doesn't provide enough revenue, to other companies. My guess is they'll sell off their titles to other companies and close up shop at least temporarily.
