As an animation, Bakemonogatari has a simple, clean art style. But the guest illustrations for the series are anything but simple! So, it's great to see that °Tens took on a more complex illustration and made it his own with vector gradients so fine at points it more resembles painting that vectoring. Do have a look at this beautiful wallpaper!

You should forget the afterlife and focus on the presence. When you're life comes to an end you will regret if you were distracted by thoughts abt what could or will happen after all the time. It's wasted time, because thinking doesn't change anything and only causes fear and depression for most people.

Based on what I think about the afterlife I stopped thinking abt it. The only thing I want when I die is that when I'm old and I can look back and say "wow, I really had a great life and I really enjoyed it as long as lasted."

You can read my thoughts abt afterlife here btw: (this thread was already closed a while ago)

I believe there is an afterlife.

CloudGer

I think this is an interesting comment. I don't feel it's wasted time. Everyone should consider a topic like this. And in my opinion it most certainly does change something. What people think will happen once their heart stops will invariably effect how they live. You yourself have engaged in this behaviour by stating 'Based on what I think about the afterlife I stopped thinking abt it.' You live in the moment; live to make the best life you can relative to what you think a good 'life' is, because of your considerations. By no means is considering an afterlife a fruitless waste of time, but it is also in no way an indication to not focus, as you have mentioned, on the present either.

As for your response to a previous thread, I have some concerns/comments.

1. You mentioned the first law of theromodynamics, put simply, that energy can be transformed, but cannot be created or destroyed. I consider (property) dualism to be more attractive than materialism, so I do believe in the physical and non-physical. Of course I respect your opinion, but for me this only adds interesting credence to my belief that your soul most definitely moves out of this world after you die. Just my opinion.

2. I found it interesting that you seemed to have solved the problem of the 'mind' in one sentence. That is by no means an easy feat, considering we've been thinking about this problem for a few thousand years now. You said "Our mind is just generated by this big cluster of albumen in our head". I have a question(s) about this. Can you tell me exactly the location of your mind in your head? Do you know what albumin (despite the previous spelling I assumed you weren't talking about egg whites) is? Can you tell me how it contributes to the formation of a 'mind'? I can answer these questions for you; the general consensus is that the mind is just posterior to the eye sockets, somewhere on the midline, under the frontal lobes. Albumin (according to you) supposedly makes up a mind. It does not. Albumin is a plasma protein made by the liver, and it serves many functions, most of which I'm sure you could read on wikipedia or some other place. However I assure you no source will tell you it makes up a 'mind'. At this point I was a little lost concerning the connection to the afterlife, so I assumed it was your arguement for the lack of a mind/soul or something thereof, and hence lack of the existence of an afterlife. Of course I disagree.

I had some more comments but I feel they stray too far from the topic. What do you think about what I have said?

First of all I know my argumentation is not very solid. I just wrote down what I believe. Abt that huge point 2 abt that mind thing: I once read a very interesting article about how the brain is controlling us and the small part of consciousness we are 'aware' of is actually very manipulated. Also something that humans in their nature probably hate to aept, because they are way to arrogant and think that they are something 'special' and thus for them there must be heaven or hell... (once again typically human seperating that into good or evil although these are relative terms even among humanity...).
I'm also sorry about that albumin thing... I'm not a native english speaker and relying on translators too much when it comes to scientific terms and concepts. I suck at explaining anyway, but especially in english. I will just take back what I said about that and leave it like that.
Despite that I feel in need to say again that this is just what I for myself do believe. Like people who need faith in something like god to live happy I'm satisfied with what I wrote there. Every1 should stick to his own beliefs in this respect, the ultimate truth will never be revealed to us anyway. I really thought about this stuff too much in the past and had terrible insomnia, because I couldn't get my head free. But then instead of questioning I just started to find my own belief and left it like that, and now I'm satisfied, becaue that's just what feels 'right' for me.

I still would prefer if there was an afterlife though. I could meet my dad for example, who I hardly know since he died when I was 6. But it just doesn't match the way I'm usually thinking.

And I'm also terribly sorry of totally drifting away from this topic again ~_~ but I think it's a good opportunity to discuss this stuff. =)

Our views
there is no second chance for another life.
life lived on this Earth is "just a test" for man to determine each individual's ultimate "reward" (paradise) or eternal "punishment" (hell) in the afterlife .
We believe that believing in life after death helps the world gain peace and also helps them be more responsible for their actions during their lives.
By denying that there is no life after death could bring destruction of society

@:3CloudGer: You're doing pretty well at you're english then, and I'm rather impressed. Jealous even, that you can speak two languages. You said: "the ultimate truth will never be revealed to us "; you're right. Episteomology is one of my most disliked topics in philosophy. Perfection is impossible, and if we cannot settle for the absoluteness of scientific truths, what is the likelehood that for a question as unverifiable as this, that we will ever have an answer or come to any agreements? Most unlikely. Good discussion, though.

@~satoushigeki: Denying that there is no afterlife? Or denying that there is an afterlife?

The idea of afterlife is one of those explanations that try to give hope that we'll somehow still be alive and conscious even after our death. We all like to believe that, that somehow it would be nice to live freely and happily after we are dead. Really, the only way to tell is to die, then you'll really know what happens after.

My mom used to say to me, if you're good you go to heaven, if you're bad you either go to hell or get reincarnated as an animal. It's one of those ideas that parents use to trick kids to force them to behave properly. I can't remember if it worked for me or not through.

This is very interesting, it started as a list fest but it became a spirituality topic with so many interesting points of view. I'll post later with more detail, for now my brief opinion is that even if afterlife exist, we cannot prove it with certainty, and our efforts must be prioritized in make current life a better one rather than worry about the after-one. In fact, if you cultivate your soul in this life, theoretically speaking you are guaranteeing a good afterlife.

@~Gvnkwyr:

Doesn't skepticism prevent theoretical thinking? Neither you nor I seem to be skeptics at this point in the discussion, but I'm sure more of it will be raised as others read that last sentence of yours, Gvn: "theoretically speaking you are guaranteeing a good afterlife". Considering the incredulousness of most others in this topic, it's going to be interesting to read what they have to say in resposne to that.

I believe there's no such thing as the afterlife; rather that people want to believe so to satisfy themselves on their death beds. Fact of the matter is; humans are just a species like any other, believing in a heaven that ignores the rest of creation is pretty absurb to me.

It is hard to discuss this topic without discussing spirituality, but the basic question is where will I exist in my afterlife? Without being able to say what I believe as a matter of faith, I don't know where we go when we die. I believe in an afterlife, but I don't believe that it matters as much as what we do in our present life.

I am Roman Catholic and I have simply come to accept the concept of an afterlife. The concept of heaven and an all powerful God is a part of the Roman Catholic credo, but the teachings of Christ decree that it is not possible to know when the afterlife will begin; only that it will occur after we die. Roman Catholic christian belief simply states that if, when we are alive we do all that we can to make the lives of others better, God will be pleased with us and we will be rewarded with a happy afterlife. Where the afterlife will be, when the afterlife will be, and what any individual does in the afterlife is unknown to me. I only know that I will be happy in the afterlife if I do all that I can to make the world that I live in a better place.

I believe a person lives as long as he is remembered. Looking at Islam for example, people who have nothing else to look forward to in life are told that their afterlives will be exceptionally good if they strap on a bomb and kill others in the process, can't you see that the afterlife is just a way of keeping people in check, more people in the world are dissatisfied with their lives, and would like to believe that there will be rewards for them, or maybe the guilt eating at them causing them to believe in divine retribution. I've seen many many people fight to kill over their beliefs or religion, I'm not saying this to prove a point, but just as a fact that people will always believe whatever they want to, despite all the media in this day and age being doctored and bias to hell. When you say that perfection is impossible, great examples of this can be seen in Tales of Symphonia and The World Ends With You/Subarashi no Sekai, the ending plot was regarding trying to either make people mindless living beings or have all peoples' thoughts align, saying that was the only way to achieve a world without discrimination or hate. Weird plots I know.

You may want to revisist christian doctrine if you believe this to be the case.
