Someone recommend me some _good_ Japanese Music (NOT J-POP)
Looking for some Japanese music with real creativity and feeling. We're talking Go!Go!7188 or Guitar Wolf or Joujouka or The Blue Hearts, here. Maybe along the lines of Merzbow or Mortalized even, but I doubt anybody here listens to stuff like that. I do not want J-Pop recommendations. I also don't want songs from anime series.'
By the way, I passed my JLPT 3 Kyuu, for anyone who cares/even knows that that is. Onward and upward...

JLPT. Japanese Language Profiency Test.
I got my results back a few days ago too, I passed the same one.
Congratulations on passing it, but you don't have to announce it here... It's irrelevant...
Anyway, how about Joe Hisaishi? I don't think he's considered J-pop.

You registered in August of 2005, well after I stopped posting here frequently. Thanks for your comment though.
I'd just like to reiterate that I don't want anime music recommendations here.

I know you're asking US for advice, but where did you get Guitar Wolf from? I've been looking to DL their music for ages.
My fav band is l'arc~en~ciel, i don't know if they would be considered j-pop though, more like j-rock. anyway, they rock my socks off, and arent related to anime, except they did ready setady go for fullmetal alchemist. but other than that, anime free music.
Congrats on your JPLT.
I've only passingly heard of Guitar Wolf, but I'm under the impression that they're rather punkish, no? You might like The Flaming Lips; they're obviously not Japanese, but they are influenced by Japanese. I, myself, am not much of a Japanese music listener. The only non-anime Japanese bands that I seriously listen to are Luna Sea and The Pillows (all of which I recommend to anyone but I don't think they are your cup of tea). I agree with you that most people here won't know what the hell you're talking/be able to recommend anything.

I figure it's worth a try. The new Pillows record is excellent, I must admit.
You should try OBLIVION DUST for a grunge with some punk sounds, or try DIR EN GREY for a non-comercial sounds. Janne Da Arc is another cool choice (for something with feeling and creativity), but it is more heavy, progressive or something like that.
Dir en Grey is really the only j-band i semi like. And only because of their "Withering to Death" album. Fuck all they're previous happy-yay pop albums like Gauze. Garbage, Dead Tree, and saku are some good songs from that group. And even then, I just dont really listen to them as I do to american bands, (still hate america and its mainstream society though) Oh wait Turmion Katilot isnt american oh but not Jap either heh.

hey do you know anymore anime that has jazz music in it too?
**sorry for going off topic Orchid**
Hey i got one for you!...its HEAPS japanese, from a video game, and its not an anime! (sure you may think once that its from a video game that its a bit iffy and poor, bad notes etc etc, but its quite good *my point of view). Its got rock, heavy rock, dance and some trance.
Its called: Jet Set Radio / Jet Set Radio Future
heres the URL (torrent) http://isohunt.com/torrents.php?ihq=jet+set+radio&ext=&op=and
select and get the one from 'music' category on the left hand side.
I like it but most people find me wierd so you may hate it, but give it a listen!

"The Back Horn". Awesome jrock band, their sound is off kilter, very intresting IMO. It's hard to describe the sound, I haven't heard any other bands like them really.
Shiina Ringo. She's a good musician, jrock basically, but also has a very odd sound to it. Not a very standard kind of rock.
