Original Scan Used: http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/scans/Ichigo-Mashimaro/item163001/
I had seen this scan of Nobue and Chika in my Ichigo Mashimaro manga and I knew I wanted to do something with it, when I saw that someone had already scanned it, I jumped on the occasion and used it.
I know this doesn't seem like it took a lot of time...But it did...Vectoring Nobue and Chika wasn't that long, the outline was fine, but the the hair was a pain. I decided to add textures to the kimonos to give them a more realistic look.
Once they were traced and colored, I had to put a background behind them. I don't know how many versions I tried. A mountain, a forest, trees, lanterns...nothing work, I looked for stuff and didn't find anything that I liked. I knew I wanted fireworks and a starry sky, but what else was I going to put...After almost giving up hope, I found these great cityscape brushes over at Brusheezy (http://www.brusheezy.com/brushes?o=downloads) and decided to use them.
The original brushes didn't have windows, so I added them to the silhouette of the buildings to give them a more night kind of feel.
All in all, I know it's not perfect, but I'm still fairly happy with this. Maybe, someday in the future, I'll try another background, but for now, it's staying the way it is.
