This wall, like any, was laborious to make. The composition of it was difficult to make function, just working out the basics of it taking several hours. I spent almost six hours on the background alone, as I drew a large part of it (most primarily the notes and bars) from scratch using the touchpad on my laptop, for lack of a tablet or even a suitable mouse. For awhile, I was unsatisfied with the wall's simplicity and experimented with adding other stocks to fill it up, a fruitless process which cost me quite a few papers - not that I really care all that much about the virtual credits. Eventually, though, I was able to satisfy myself by deepening the colours of the stock and adding some "business" to the BG. After that, I spent several hours playing with different texts and methods of typography. I attempted and dismissed the possibility of a big, boldly written title, as I figured it would have taken away from the composition. Same for a single small, well-thought phrase. Eventually, I came up with, "Es war die Wille über Menschheit zu ausbrechen vom aufsässig Himmel und ansteigen hinein ein heilig verbannen," a far longer sentence than what would make logical sense. But I was able to stretch it from far left to far right, leading the eye from the beginning of the text to the end. I think it works well with the composition.
To be completely honest, I can't say I'm completely sure about this end result. I know for a fact that the composition is solid, that I chose the correct text and that I like the colours, but there's just something... Maybe it's just some feeling that comes with struggling so long to make one thing work in the composition, and then having to go with something else entirely. I think I might just feel like I had to settle for an end product that was not my ultime goal. But I think, perhaps, I'll come back a month or two from now, once I've spent some time on other projects and gained distance from this one, and be able to tell myself quite definitely, "You know, this is actually a pretty clean piece."
Yeah. That's right. In the end, I'm sure this is a good wall I've created, probably one of my betters. I'm just mourning the hours lost on failed endeavors.
My thanks go out to the folks in session zero. I know it looks like I completely dismissied most - or all - of your advice, but I do value your comments and they helped me a great deal.
"Es war die Wille über Menschheit zu ausbrechen vom aufsässig Himmel und ansteigen hinein ein heilig verbannen," is German, and it means, "It was the wish of mankind to break away from the hostile sky and ascend into an holy exile."
I hope y'all like my wall. I'd like to think it was worth the time I put into it.
