With this wallpaper, I mainly tried to allow it to be part of a series, with one wallpaper per Angel: this meant no Angel-specific designs, but a basic design that can be altered depending on the Angel, creating series with recognisable recurring features but unique wallpapers nonetheless. In the end, I think the wallpapers look a bit like the Character Songs from Haruhi, but I digress. I’ve attempted this idea multiple times trying to find a style I felt comfortable with. Previous attempts were Sachiel (my first attempt), which looked sort of like the final version, but the second attempt, Arael, looked totally different, changing the entire wallpaper’s colour and making the Angel’s appearance far more stylized. I spent about a day finalizing the design, having started right after my first wallpaper was rejected (and boy did I deserve the fine – I really should read FAQs next time). After that, it was a few hours to complete one Angel’s wallpaper, and then a few minutes to make versions for other aspect ratios and add the signature. For the title, Angel Portraits: Ramiel, I just went with something simplistic that isn't as boringly ordinary (and probably in use) as "Fifth Angel Ramiel", but will still make it easy to indicate it as part of a series of similar wallpapers.
One thing, however, I would have liked to have seen in the wallpaper, was a more detailed background, but I could not find decent EVA or Angel-free backgrounds to use, so I went with a blanker look. (However, if you look closely, you’ll see that the background is in fact not a solid colour.)
The yellow colour was based on Ramiel’s symbol, Thunder, which I associated with lightning. For the image of Ramiel I utilized the Evangelion Chronicle Illustration of Ramiel, which was uploaded in Neon Genesis Evangelion scans by subsub. The wallpaper was edited with GIMP 2.6.7.
Also, the FAQ says the wallpaper should feature characters from a named animé, but I guess Angels count as characters.
