Hm. I had originally made this wall a month ago, under request of a friend, but recently decided to revise a couple flaws I could find and ask for input.
Anyway. First off, the characters were vectored - both the foreground couple and the background shadows. I'm still not fully satisfied on how the main vector turned out - but, since I can't really know what is bothering me, then I guess it's better asking those with unbiased eyes...
The pillar was traced off an actual photo, found through Google. I don't think I'd be able to find the source site again, though.
Original wall made in three days - that is, about 14 hours of work.
Comments? Suggestions? Critiques? Flames? All of those are welcome, broadly (well, maybe except flaming, I guess).
Brushes and stock photos from Akthar2, Scully7491 and Resurgere @ DeviantArt.
On a side note... the title. It might sound strange, since this isn't a "dark" wall. However, "The Place of Death" is the boss theme of the oldschool Genesis RPG Phantasy Star II (japanese version; just "Death Place" in the occidental versions). Since they're supposed to be kinda surrounded by enemies... well, I thought it was fitting. But I suck at titles, anyway, so.
EDIT: Thanks for the comments. A small revision.
First off, I've added a brown layer over the characters, so that they aren't so shiny, and a little shadow over the girl - although I fear it's barely recognizable (the original, unrevised work had more shadows over the characters, but it looked strange. Also, I've tweaked the soft-lighted photo a little, since I noticed it generated a huge mold in the pillar >_>.
Although I've seen a handful of complaints on the fog covering the background... well, truth be told, I didn't really make much to be seen there. Also, less fog could mean need of details, when I really only vectored the shadows (outlines), not really the actual background characters. But if you have suggestions, bring them on.
