This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
@Damo: Well when I click on it to sign it in, it takes a while to load and then a message appears saying "click troubleshoot and we'll repair the problem" Doesn't tell me what the problem is after.
Well, if you want to know more then I'll be available through PM or MSN, whichever is best for you. Rather not go further into on the SB of all places. =P
Well, this is a new genre break for me, as it is my first anime wallpaper. i was going to submit it to the contest, but it looks ugly, so i thought i'll just scrape it. was gonna delete it, but its my first anime wall after all, and i developed a sentimental feeling towards it.
i wanted to replicate that bebop style from the opening, didn't work out too well. i guess my use with the pen tool is too akward :( i wanted to recreate the battle scene at the tower by drawing it on the background, but i just can't stand the color scheme. i was also influenced by a scan i saw in animepaper at cowboy bebop section. (hence the blue girl).
I think you mimiced the style from the opening very well. I think Spike and the girl look especially good. There isn't anything at all I dislike about this wall. Great job!
Interesting idea, but like you say the tracing is not so hot so the full size is a bit lacking. There's a thread in session zero where I detail how I do pen tracing which might give you some tips. Or there's some stuff about how to use illustrator cos it might be easier to do this using proper vectors. Spike looks ok.
I like it too. Vincent though, as mentioned in other comments needs a little more work. I like how you incorperated the girl (forgot her name...) in blue there, and she's definetly the best vector job on this wall. But the top and bottom of where she ends could be tidied up to create more... flow... into Spike. Spike's hair and face are awesome, but his sleeves perhaps need more attention.
I think this is a very well constructed wallpaper. It looks great and has a lot of style. My only problem with it would be that the main portion of blue is kind of in an awkward place. Focus points tend to look off when they are placed close to the center.
The tracing is not so bad - it's only Vincent's face that looks a little weird. It could have used another colour behind Vincent too, or maybe recompose the pic so that Electra is more in the center...
I think you're being a little too hard on yourself. i like the wallpaper a lot! you've hit the mark with what you were aiming to achieve with the style.

i also think you hit it on the money regarding imitating the Bebop opening style.
