This wallpaper gives us a perfect example of how a simple manga scan can be turned into a beautiful vector. Not only did danalm trace the lineart, but he also added amazing details and a simple, yet wonderful background. Furthermore, the wallpaper shows us how the monochromatic style can make your work look really interesting.
Following on my latest obsession for Kazuya Minekura's work and having done Saiyuki for my first wall, it's time for Kubota and Tokito from Wild Adapter to get the well-deserved attention for my second wall.
The idea for the title 'Stray Cat' comes from the manga with Kubota picking up Tokito the 'stray cat' as pictured in this wall in their first introduction to each other. Also relates to Tokito's deformed right hand looking like a claw - read manga for more story :)
Here I wanted to create a 'noir movie'-like shot where it's kinda smelling dark and angsty - hence the cinematic widescreen borders and a touch of sepia for extra dramatic effect.
It's done in a comic/manga style because I love the original scan (courtesy of Bane Huntress) which is basically just a pic of the guys in pencil sketch - hence, crazy filtering abuse on the original alleyway stock photo to match the sketchy look.
The background was definitely the biggest challenge here. With minimal brushing involved, the background stockphoto is almost purely transformed using a mesh of complicated composites of various photoshop's basic filters, plus minor tweaks using Dodge, Burn and default brushes.
Massive thanks for people in Session Zero for your comments and suggestions, esp for the sepia idea, really appreciate everyone's help.
OMG I love this! Although we don't see any of their faces, this is like THE moment in the manga where the 2 guys meet and their friendship starts off. And this wallpaper have completely captured the atmosphere of it all! Wonderful, love the dark and grungy feel I get from it.
I like the way this pic makes you think about all the people living in the slums. and you wonder what the standing man is doing...will kick the drunk or help him?
Fantastic man...and this wall is so awesome! i love the colors, and then random splashes of shades and shapes and all the things in this wall make this that much more exciting... this is my fav of the day!!inspiring to get a look at walls like this, clean, original and effective. I think that you are a great wallpaper maker.
This is a friggin' awesome wall~ Grunge and angle effect. Awesome!
Gorgeous. The colors obviously match perfectly..perhaps a bit too perfectly? Also, am not a huge fan of text. But all in all a wonderful wall. the vector is amazing...keep on it..you are a really hero...

Awesome. Your way of transforming the alleyway pic into a manga-style pic totally worked, and the whole wallpaper comes together very nicely. The dark theme in this wallpaper is very clearly conveyed. Definitely gonna fav! XD
