This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
I made this wallpaper with one purpose in mind: to get some practical use with the gradient mesh tool. I've been using Illustrator since version 5 and never found the courage to try it out, for although it is very powerful (really great vector artists can acheive near photo-quality images with it) it is very complex and hard to control.
In order to force myself to learn, I picked out a PlanetES image because it had lots of soft color changes and gradients, and began experimenting.
Along the way I learned a lot that didn't work well and a few things that did. And here is the result. As a crash course in mesh tool, it's not bad. All the gradients in this trace are done using mesh, even in instances were a simple linear/radial gradient would have sufficed.
The Earth image is from NASA's website. I was so not going to trace that. Google Image Search for the win.
I know nothing about PlanetES; I chose the scan because it was on my hard drive, and I thought the concept of the image as a reflection was interesting. To that extent I did not add in the portion of Hachimaki's back, instead having the image a pure reflection, so that it's almost like it's your reflection - you are floating up to dock at a space station, or something like that (like I said, no idea what PlanetES is about, although I wouldn't mind watching it if I ever had time.)
As for the title, well, it's the name of a popular tv show. Why not.

Like I already said, this is marvelous Tama *_*
The mesh tool is powerfull indeed, the vector looks so good its dazzling
and i like that kind of anime artwork x3
Good stuff. I can relate, I too force myself to use certain tools for the sake of knowledge. I've yet to do a full vector with illustrator however, Im still quite new to the technique so I vector with photoshop, I'll have to sit and masochistically learn my way around the software. As for the wall, rather impressive, the quality of the vector is unmatched, although i would add a few stars to the reflection; its mere personal preference.
Mesh tool? wazzat? XD I'll porbably have to get a few more years of experience before I touch on that matter +_+ The detail is amazing o.o Really looks like as if it was a screenshot from an anime...uhh, high quality anime =X It'll be nice if you can just add a tad bit more on the bg to make it umm...less empty? I dunno >_< Anyway, nice wall. Glad you learned something so you can make even more pwnage walls =X

Added to favorites simply for that, but also very much appreciated because of the effort. Awesome looking wall man, I might have to resize a little bit for my monitor, though. xP
I love Planetes and wish more people made good wallpapers like this one out of them. I'll probably be using this one for a bit on my computer. It's really clean, and is missing the majority of the JPG factoring that most of the Planetes images out there are known for having.
It's Hachimaki! This by far is the highest quality PlanetES wallpaper I have ever seen. I've also been practicing with the gradient mesh tool...but let's say I get less than subpar results. Hopefully I'll be able to reach this level some day.
This is a really amazing work Tama-Neko! The vectoring is amazing and the colors are just great. I hope to use the Mesh Tool myself one day too. ^^
Thanks for this awesome PlanetES wall!
I like it especially using reflections or is it a screen showing the image? Anyway it makes you think, which is good in my book. the black background looks a little plain, maybe adding a few stars etc. would make it look more interesting. Overall very nice and good quality.
Cool. Good wall idea. I like the empty space in the top left, thats were i keep my desktop icons :D now they wont be in the way of much. Great job, nice work, wonderful, cool, awesome, yay! thanks
