This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
I was browsing the misc scans gallery in MT to both keep it clean (moving inappropriate images out of the gallery) and to see if there were any good scans of shrines/temples for a wallpaper I'm working on. I found this scan of Neko no Ongaeshi and just loved it. Hiiragi's art is pretty simplistic, and I like the anime designs of the characters more (especially the fact that Baron is a ginger cat, not black) but the simplistic watercolor style of the picture, plus its feelings of easy friendship between these three, really drew me in. I redrew the wall and the rooftop that Baron is leaning against/standing upon, and then used several blended stock photos for the skies. I added texturing to maintain that watercolor on rough paper feel. Since in the end of the Neko no Ongaeshi manga, these three are resting on top of a building (watching over Haru?) and the anime ending theme was "Kaze ni Naru" or "Becoming the Wind" I decided to use that for the title. Very summery.
Look! It's a wallpaper that (provided you only have 1-2 columns of icons) is suitable for a PC OR a Mac!

EDIT: Fixed some of the problems Nuniko brought to my attention, and a few other things (Toto had an odd blue halo around him) and darkened/roughened up the clouds to feel more watercolorish.
Oh my BARON.... It's hard to find such a gentle "human". The color tone are so soft and, I don't know why, warm though they are cool colors... Maybe his smile does.
Thank you very much.
