This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

In a time when people are vectoring like mad to achieve a crispest effects, or painting like made to achieve the smoothest effects, I have decided to take a step back and wholy embrace the unloved quanta of digital art, the pixel, in all of its boxy glory. Thus I present to you a vision of what Katamari Damacy would have looked like had it been released 10 years ago -- in other words, Katamari Damacy meets SimCity 2000.
This wall began when I was browsing the Namco site looking for some refs for a simplistic "Katamari Crossing" type of wall I had in mind, but when I saw this wall with the Prince rolling a katamari through a city, the composition reminded me of isometric pixel art. Never one to pass up an opportunity to try a new style, I decided to recreate the wall as pixel art. After reading a few articles from Computer Arts Showcase and staring at the top pixel artworks from DeviantArt, I jumped right in.
There were about 30 'base' buildings. It took the better part of a month to make them all and then populate the city, building it up like Legos. Definately the most detail-intensive wall I've ever made.
I need to learn a lot more about isometric pixel art. I still can't get the hang of lighting and how the heck you're supposed to add highlights.
The name of the wall is a play on the "We Heart Katamari" name.
I realize that this image makes an utterly awful wallpaper. I mean, where the heck did my icons go?
Still, it was an extremely fun experiment. I even hid myself in the wall.
Just goes to show, you're never too old to learn a new technique.

Holy shit man i cant believe you pixellated a whole wallpaper. I can't even do a tiny square. i love the details. the whole thing and concept is cute. good job
It looks superb! It makes me wanna try a pixart tutorial as well :D. I agree that this won't ever funtion as a wallpaper, and also, at some places there are mistakes like houses placed on roads and that sort of things... But who cares. Its original and I really like it's retro simcity style. +fav
You're crazy XD
I would never use this as my desktop background, but as a piece of art I can see how much work you put into it and it's very creative. You did a great job of capturing the spirit of the good old Sim City 2000^^
Wow, major props for even attempting this. You did an awesome job for your first time. It looks a little, how should I saw, "pixellated", I've seen some pixel art where they were able to make it not crisp but not jagged on the edges, I forgot how they did it but I remember seeing a tutorial on it. Still, great job with all the details. It lost a lot of quality in the JPG transition, I'd like to see a high quality version so I can really see it in all its glory. XD
Lol, this is awesome, seriously. Props for such an original, wacked and nice idea. My only relative complain is that it's probably not extremely desktop friendly in case one has a lot of icons, but for icons-free desktops (or almost icon free ones) this is really a cute wallpaper to use. :)
Omgoodness. it is so cute ><
and all those hidden little things make you stare at your desktop non-bored for hours. anyways, thanks for the fun wall. :D
Damnnnnnnnn, that is a lot of work. Everything looks very good and detailed, I think you did an awesome job. Just one thing I would like to comment on; SAVE AT A HIGHER RESOLUTION! I can see a sh*t load of jpeg artifacts, and it really ruins the wall.
Other then that, it is sure to go in my favs.

You're ridiculous, lol. the only thing i would've liked in this wall is a more colorful approach - because WITH the pixelly ness of 10 years ago came a lower set of colors that could be displayed by a monitor; and msot of those colors were intensely bright. but i lol nontheless.
Soo much detail. I can't believe that you have enough patience to make such a wall. I'm in even more awe of your works than ever before. the wall is great!
I have to say, absolutely fantastic job! I love making pixel art, so it's awesome to see an entire wallpaper done in it, and a huge one at that. Not something I would have attempted personally...it must have been a nightmare getting everything to line up and be (for the most part) technically accurate.
I like how you hid yourself in the work as well, nice touch. It's like a Where's Waldo book now, heh. No criticisms worth mentioning, overall A+ job.
Wow. ... just wow. That is an amazing wall! Really unique and uber detailed! Haha, this wall is gonna keep me amused for a long time... kinda like a Where's Waldo? pic. lol. Wish I had a screen big enough to use the 1920x1200! Awesome job!
