While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

maybe you should make hime colorless.
and also enlarge the picture of the girl and make her face clearer.
oh and is there a border?cause i see tat the guy has been cut off at some point(made half-transparent)...

maybe you could even add a border to the image...

Oh well ... the scans looks poor quality u_u ... and the BG looks so white and it's not good this way .. so i suggest you to use a texture in the BG and you have to pick some Good quality scans ... and add some brushes too!

This is a really cool concept. I'm not sure what I can recommend except trying to clean up what seems like a bit of "artifacts" form either the scan or optimizing it as a jpeg.
