This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
This idea came to mind when I was at the library. The librarian came across the pa and announced that the library would be closing in 5 min. At this time all the lights shut off and the only lighting was the spectacular sunset coming through the wide open glass windows on the side of the room. I though to myself, "This would make an nice wallpaper." As soon as i got home, I started searching for a good scan in the AP gallery to use for a wallpaper. I came across this cute scan and knew it was the one.
12 15 layers, 11 15 Hrs, and A Lot of time spent messing with shadows and lighting effects later. This wall emerged. Ive considered adding text but I just feel that its calmness would be obstructed by it.
Ive submitted a ton of wallpapers and somehow they always get rejected. Regardless of how much effort I put in, How many times I revise it, or anything. I really want to see this one go further.
This is the second revision. I have changed quite a few things, such as the aspect ratio, The shadows, the shading, and a few other things.
I had the help of my mom who is a professional artist, So I cant take all the credit. She gave me a few tips.
I also took into consideration a lot of the comments on the last thread. The only thing I cant decide on is whether or not to add text.
If anyone has any advice on what to do, It would be highly appreciated!
The lighting effects and all are nice but the background is still too realistic. Each rejection should have a small note in it as to why your wallpaper was rejected.
To fix that realism issue, the easiest method is just to smudge everything, like in this wallpaper, using a smudged stock.
You see, They dont give a reason why they got rejected. They just say "With alittle more time, as if 30 hrs isnt enough, this wallpaper could be good." Then it gets sent back to SZ.
AS for smudging, how would you suggest i go about doing that?

I agree with shigemitsubaki - this wallpaper is an excellent idea. The only problem is that the background looks too realistic compared to the character. Alas, I don't know how you go about fixing that, but that's probably the main issue at hand. I would also suggest giving Yuki a drop shadow from the light from the window.
I was going to say 'you eyedrop each major color then smudge on the layer over it', but fine. Vector the BG. I've done it. And no, 40 hours won't be enough.
Don't kill yourself vectoring the bg... just smudge her to blend in as has already been suggested. Use shigemitsubaki's example for reference.
In regards to shadows... look at her legs. See the shadow just below her skirt? That shadow should stretch all the way down the back (right hand side) of her legs. Use the eye dropper tool on the darker skin tone just below her skirt and color (with the brush tool) in the rest of her legs.
Now look at the back and the front of her skirt. The highlights are the same color. Simply eye dropper tool the dark shade on her skirt and shade in (read: color with the brush tool) the back of her skirt.
If you take these pointers and the ones already mentioned (smudge her), in another hour or two this will be finished.
Hmm a great concept, although I think blending the character more to the background would be great (maybe if you add some light and shadows to the edges of the character would help make the wallpaper seem slightly more realistic). Other than that, you're doing a great job, so keep it up ^_^!
Alright, ive attempted vectoring the bg and it looks like crap. As far as smudging it and changing the shadows, how would you reccomend i go about smudging it? As far as changing the shadows, I belive i can do that with the pen tool and some anchor points...
But what would be the best way to go about smuding it

Alright I have changed quite a few things on this latest Revision.
I have used the smudge tool
The floor is cleaned up and I have also added an EXTREAMLY faint shadow on Yuki to the bookshelf behind her. Before you say "There wouldn't be a shadow there" Let me just tell you to shut up. Because I went to the place where I took the picture, Had my girlfriend stand there, and I took a few pictures. There IS a small small shadow projected onto the bookcase from the window closet to the camera. There was also a few shadows on the floor, but they were out of sight of the camera, and out of sight of the wall.
I also used the eyedropper and made a few changes to the books. Now theres solid colors mixed in there to give that "This is not a photograph" effect |(N_N)|
There should be a small shadow under her raised foot - it will cover partially the light at the bottom right corner. Also, her shirt his currently too dark - I can't see the shade on it since there isn't enough contrast on it. However, I was able to see it correctly on your earlier version (the other post). So, maybe you could try to choose a lighter shade between the two version? Finally, if you add some text, try to add it around the windows and it should be okay. Keep up the good work!
Hey, you're doing well. All of the advice about where to place shadows and tones is great, but you've made something new - something that wasn't just a paste job or a doodle on an existing scan. Don't get discouraged and don't kill yourself making sure the dandruff is appropriately shaded...you're supposed to enjoy making the wall. Keep working as long as the work is satisfying, then stop.
I like the idea, and enjoy the spareness of the layout. You've gotten enough detailed advice to not need any more from me.
Now if you can just work the "Staring Inferno" in there somewhere...
Tachiap, I just read your comment. Trust me, im really enjoying it a lot.
The part about moving the shadow down her leg was good in theory, But ive done a lot of testing with actual photographs of the spot and having my girlfriend stand there waring a skirt. (No I refuse to host this image =D) There is no shadow going down her leg due to the window closest to the camera. It cancels out any shadow that would be there.
But I did mess with the shadows on her in a few other places. There just about right. But I know this wall still needs more.
Yeah i agree that the background is just too realistic.
HOWEVER, it is the background itself that has the potential to really make this something special. if there can be something done to it then you've got it made.
