After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!
Hi everyone! This is ANNA and I present you my entry for the battle vs EVI @ povism.org.
::THE THEME::
A Season's love.
Judging as per the rules.
- only male + female couples are allowed (no ecchi!)
- no gray-scale and no B&W
- have to be mixed in use of tools (that means you can't make a full PS
brushes wall with with a scan, or just a full vectored piece nor a
full painted one. Doesn't matter how much, you have to use different
tools to make the wall.
- at least 1280*1024 (widescreen allowed)
- text is allowed as long as you don't write the season's name (you
chose) into it.
- only vectors made by you are allowed
- stocks are not allowed, (ie, photos)
- textures can be used (and brushes)
I chose my wall to feature Summer! My favourite season. Some of my partners said that it's not quite straightforward. I had my doubts too but I asked my lovely mother and she responsed: "Summer of course!" And as I said before, I trust my mother. >3<
I used almost every tool that exists in Photoshop CS2.

4. Smudge tool for fine details and blending
5. Dodge tool for light effects

I started browsing galleries that contained art I liked while searching for couple scans. I then browsed Deus Machina Demonbane. I saw this scan and fell in love with it.
I just had to think of how to make a wall out of it. Then I went to deviantart for inspiration. I saw this tiny image that basically inspired me.
This is your amazingest work, really. I'm happy, that I could the watch the borning of this amazing piece! To paint that bg is wOOOw, and the vector is very nice too. Really nice job! Continue your work! The dual version is better, more painted underwater bg there! :D

It's a breathtaking wallpaper (pun intended) also very detailed and creative. Love how you make gleam of sunlight penetrates through the depths of the ocean/sea and how you put your effort on making the aquatic life in BG looks alive. The bubbles looks great too. Yes, both of the characters blends well with the aquatic surrounding.
Just when Kurou suddenly opens his mouth underwater, there must be some air escaped from his mouth and some amounts of bubbles formed around him and hits Al Azif's face. That the only thing that bugs me in this WP.
Anyway, thumbs up!

This is really pretty, but I don't think it emphasizes summer (or any season, for that matter). Also, something about the text doesn't seem right to me. The placement is good, but the fontface doesn't seem striking enough :3
So I definitely like this piece and the effort you put into it, but I don't think it really fit the requirement of the competition ^^;
Another truly awesome work from VA. You guys put forth some awesome works as always and this one in particular has a lovely color scheme and shows an unbelievable amount of effort.

Okay I admit that the background looks magnificent the wall compistion is great. And the colors too.
But I think the season can’t be recognized easily. And sorry, for some reason I can’t believe you didn’t use any stock. Some parts (like the rocks on the right side and especially the fishes) are way too photo looking.
And because of the above mentioned confusing things I’m not satisfied with this wall (being one of those who actully wrote the rule for the battle)
If we don’t mention the battle it’s an awesome wall i have to admit. But like this I’m unceratin.
I must admit I am amazed with the wallpaper you have submitted it. Concerning the composition I have no words actually, it is magnificent…
Nevertheless looking at your description and following your WIP, I must admit really that this is not a digitally painted background. You may have stated so, but the more I look at this piece the more photorealism / photo manipulation with lots of smudge and added features (fishes/apart from the three that are close to the characters on the left). The plants though are drawn and that is for sure. As for the bubbles i love them^^, either brushed or painted.
It is the first time I actually criticize someone’s work (the way someone worked to be specific) but it is something that caught my eyes.
Maybe you haven’t explained clearly the way you worked. It is not bad to use photo reference, if you actually state the followings:
a. “I used a photo reference to re create the X element (meaning you saw something and painted something as it is…yet it is clearly shown that it is your creation)”
b. “I used a stock photo and manipulated parts of it to create the X element (meaning you used the X element as it is but added or erased parts using smudge – healing etc)”
Well, if the rules are not allowing the use of stock photo but only on reference this wallpaper is against the rules.
As for the season concept…well it is not something that I would decide whether it is shown through your wallpaper or not, it depends on the other competitor’s wallpapers and their way of using this info from the rules.
Other than that, I must admit that if I am making a mistake and being strict or wrong in any possible way, depending in my knowledge on digital painting of’ course, I will write another comment stating my apologies.

I just had to think of how to make a wall out of it. Then I went to deviantart for inspiration. I saw this tiny image that basically inspired me.
WIP:
Step One: Scan rotation, lineart, scan extension, scan extraction, placement into blank canvas.
Step two: Painting of lineart:
Step three: Basic bg colors
Step four: I blended and defined the shapes on both sides and then added lots of details on the right side mostly and less on the left side.
Step five: More details on the right side. Added painted fish with reference, bubbles, lighting tweaks, and a black border.
Step six: Details on the left side along with more fish. I also edited some things I didn't like. The squid is a touch that is about to go in the next
step. I also added text.
Step seven: Final touches, lighting effects, more blending of the characters into the bg.
