I thought red was colour, lol sorry couldn't resist. Though I do agree that the red is far too strong because the cape on the boy is also very red based so maybe a little variation would be very refreshing. I would also recommend that you reduce the shadow a little bit because even though I have seen darker wallpapers it feels darker than them. I like the background effect as it seems slightly gothic and extravegant which fits with the scan in my opinion. Try and make it seem a little less flat as well and I think we'd be onto a winner.
