for this picture, I used a screencap from the anime.
We can see on the expression of his face the self-confidence, the power and the satisfaction hat gives him the powers of the DEATH NOTE.
I think that the contrast strengthens this impression.

The black bars at the top and bottom give it a nice motion-capture, freeze-frame or cinematic feel to it.
If the second hand on the clock in the bg was a bit longer, making it seem more apparent and visible, i think it would be better.
