This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
I was debating for a while if I should upload this or not.
I don't really draw in an anime style, nor do I paint on the computer very often, so I feel like this is a poor representation of what I can do when I try >_>
In the end, I decided, "eh, why not?" and so here it is.
I scribbled this picture at some point in my 2 week class in Tokyo. We had to pretty much fill a sketchbook with drawings and sketches as part of the assignment of being there. The class wasn't really a class, more of like a 2 week trip of shopping, traveling and going to temples and museums with a requirement of a final animation, sketchbook and journal. I think I scribbled this down after going to Akihabara and seeing all the electronics, and how there were people that couldn't live without them. A lot of my sketches from there had headphones now that I think of it...
Anyways, the drawing is from about a year ago. I scanned it in, and did some fixing up in painter, which is where I also went through and colored the whole thing. I'm more of a REAL watercolor person, so it was kinda...meh to paint on the computer. Wallpapering was done in PS, and I know i got those silly brushes in the background from somewhere on DA.
Not much to say except I feel like i kinda stepped out of my element to draw this one, which I think those few of you who have actually seen my animations can attest to. I'm usually much more simplistic. I like sketchy lines, and thats why i used "charcoal" to do the lines. And the lines are grey on purpose.
I think it's pretty obvious whats going on here. No, the drawings not perfect, but I'm lazy and so i probably won't fix anything or change anything. I need to move on and do some of my other stuff.
Critiques are encouraged. That way I know better for next time :3
Despite how poorly you think you did, I think it turned out great ;)
I'm a big fan of the original art, probably because I'm not a great artist myself and I love to see what other people are capable of. I think my favorite part would be the hair, the shading seems just right and the single read hairpiece is the perfect splash of color. I also really like the black/red/grey/white color scheme as a whole, and the subtle design in the background is a great addition. If I have to critique anything about this wall, it would be the mans right hand. The knuckle on his index and middle finger especially look swollen. Also, I believe the pinky is supposed to be underneath the headphones and covered by the ring finger, but it's somewhat disorienting being unable to see it, so even though it's not necessarily practical, I would recommend drawing at least part of the pinky so the hand doesn't look so awkward.
You say maybe it's not perfect but meh. Nothing is. And I like the whole mood you created. Usually I'm not too fond of these colorless walls but when they are well made I can easily fall for them.
I like those hands a lot :O

Well, i think is a nice wall, you did a good job drawing it, but the outline looks weird, like a graffiti looking outline, XD. and the whole wall is too opaque, i don't like very dark walls, as you said the brushes in the back just don't work at all, the shades and the coloring are good. may be you could teach me ;).
overall, is nice. i think you can definitely do a lot better, i know you can, I've seen some of your work after all, keep it up XD.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, those headphones are really screwed up... and evil!
Anyway, I really like this one, the characters look fantastic and the simple but elegant background complement everything nicely. And of course, monochrome color schemes rock!
Cool sketch, your original art is great, my fav. It looks pretty macabre and combine with red/gray the effect is chilling. One thing that bothers me is that the sketchy look of the character doesn't really fit with the smooth brushed background..
Wow o.O
this day i saw 10 or more wallpapers in the category:orginal art!
and all of them were amazing!
but you'res is the best that's i saw till now
I love the color and the bg
Great wallpaper

This one really is kind of impressive for an original art wallpaper. You know, Kalico, I wish I could draw like that But, heh, I'm not capable of drawing so well (nor by computer, nor on a real paper with real pencils or something like that), so I guess that all is left for me is to thank you for this cute wallpaper and wish you good luck in wallmaking!
I think it's worth being in my fav list))

This is indeed a very conceptual project...
I think that the main character has very interesting feautures. She seems so innocent and strong at the same time.
What i like the most is the colous, the blending of the painting.
It's bad that we didn't pay so much attention to this wall from the beginning. It deserves more favs and comments IMHO.
There are more and more OAA wallpapers these days 8D!! This wallpaper reminds me of a Korean horror movie, hehe. I like the red and the grey and how the earphones are glowing. I also like how the centered-ness adds to the intensity.
As a critique, I think that the background doesn't look sketchy enough for the characters, and that the characters aren't clean enough for the background. Maybe it's just because I expect this kind of wallpaper to be a grunge wallpaper. Moving on, the body of the man (I assume) is very interesting and looks very real, but I don't feel that it's serious enough. Or, in other words, I think that he should be more straight/rigid to make him look more fearful. But if you didn't intend for this to be that extreme then nevermind, haha. One last point I have is that her left eye looks like it's closer to the center than her right eye, hehe.
Hope you have time to make more original anime art wallpapers~
I'm really glad that you decided to finish this. Gah, you are so talented, Kalico. Not only being able to draw, but walling and animating. So many things =X.
I think what I probably like the most about this wallpaper is the coloring you chose to work with. The grey, black and red combination work SO well together. Of course, what really works nice is how well you draw. It looks so good, Kalico < 3. I really thought that the notes coming out of the headset was a nice touch to the wallpaper and the simple but pleasant background works so well with your drawing also. As always, you know how to make text work with a wallpaper, something I find to be an amazing talent.
Overall, I can't really express how impressed I am with this wall simply by my words alone. It's absolutely wonderful and you should like it too! It's also a favorite for me.

well i really like the concept but i think the wall over all is somewhat of a failure.
i'm only saying this because in my head i automatically compare it with some of your other works that are so meticulously digitally painted.
i wish it had more mood...i understand your use of grey but really it ends up making the whole idea look a bit sloppy and silly.
very nice char design tho...
girl you better blow me away with whatever you have coming next XD. don't go around walling without passion :)
Have a nice day!
If religion is that which binds men to one another, and irreligion that which sunders, then must I testify that I found the religion of my country in its musical genius and its irreligion in its churches and drawing rooms.
