This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.
While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.
This is a somewhat different wallpaper for me! First of all, I haven't ever made a Samurai Warriors wallpaper before, and I rarely use purple! I wanted to make this wallpaper look like a painting. I got my inspiration from several places...some quite odd. XD
1.the scan itself (http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/scans/wished/item147840/)
2.My bathroom walls (they are painted a dark periwinkle)
3.My shower curtain...it's a lavender color
4.My Kleenex/tissue box, which has pink and white flowers that look painted. XD
5.One of my towels which has green, purple, and white stripes.
Ahem. Yes. Most of which can be found in my bathroom...how strange. Anyhoo!! I did change some of the colors along the way, but my initial idea stuck. I diligently extracted Ranmaru (by the way, he's a guy...a very pretty guy if you didn't know), and then I proceeded to smudge all of him! I wanted to give the effect of a painting, and I thought that was a good way to do it. Plus, it cleaned up the scan...well, hid all the hideousness of the original scan's texture, etc. So yeah, that took a while. -__- I also kinda redid (more like improved) his eyes. I used the pen tool and normal brushes. I wanted them to stand out a bit more than they did.
The background was all brushwork. Layers of purple, green, white, blue, etc. flowers and other brushes that looked like...errr, paintbrush strokes! Then I used more brushes to overlay and create the texture that you see. :3 Texture fun and brushwork, that's my style. Oh, and then I overlayed brown-ish clouds...to make the color you see, but then I erased some away to emphasize the purple/gold in some areas! And finally I added the text. That took a while because I'm so indecisive when it comes to where to put the text. ^^;; I hope it looks ok. Overall, this took 2 hours or more...
Enjoy! I hope you like it!
Edit: Text on the right was changed. I changed the font, boldness, and location. I really hope it looks better rather than worse. :( Also, I blurred those really strong white flower brush strokes. I figured they did look a bit too out of place. So now I hope that the overall wallpaper looks more congruous. If not, I'm sorry. I'm not perfect.
Firstly, very nice wall, it's been downloaded and you get a favorite from me :D
Let's go over the positives of this wall, shall we? I would have to say you did achieve a painterly quality with the piece. The background is very post-impressionist with the heavy and unmodelled paint strokes. The figure itself is a stylized a bit differently, in more of a Baroque art style with a touch of CG mixed together, which causes the figure to "pop" more, especially with such an abstract background. Without this, the figure would melt into the background, and passed over upon a glance.
Now lets hit the negatives real fast. Firstly, the type. Its my philosophy that type can make or break a wall. In this situation, it came close to being an assassin XD. The type is too large to start with, and it is also too light. (btw this is referring to the text on the right, the title "Warrior" is fine.) It causes it to be weak, not really having much impact, and is barely legible. Also as mentioned earlier, the background and the figure are of 2 different styles. This gives the cut and paste effect, which can be very unattractive. (Not in this case though.)
Even though I have laid out these negatives, don't take them to heart. The latter negative actually works more in your advantage, since we dont want such a striking figure to be washed out by the background. Dispite my gripes, I find myself very much enjoying this wall, and I am glad to see experimentation with such positive results. The only thing I say to work on is your type work, which is a touchy thing. Try not to think of type as type but as an element of the artwork, like a brush stroke or a shape. Don't limit it to just left to right serif font or a fancy decor font, experiment with it and see what happens! The best art is usually an accident :D
...Sorry for goin off on a tangent, but i hear this lecture a lot and I get picky about type XD.
Anyway!! Keep up the good work, this wall is great, and I'd like to see some more of what you can do in this styles :D
-Cheers

Wow! This is awesome Zakuro-chan, I really like it the background it's great I love the brush work that you made ( I always like itXD) it fits perfectly with the wall style... the only thing that I don't like that much it's the text (it's good but not perfect) anyway great job!
Lookin good
nice inscription, could be better visible tho
barely found it
i like the design and how all is smudgy with just the face totally crisp
kinda wonder what kind of sword can have such a long grip...
in any case, its a special wall
Lol ok i know i commented once, but you tossed a revision up, and what a good revision indeed! You have worked the type much better, and the background blending is quite nice :D!
If i could favorite it again I would, but I am probably pushing my luck with a second comment :X...
very good work once again! And that's a good point, that's gotta be one hell of a sword with a handle like that :o...
Wow, it looks really desert-ish! Part of the background looks a bit like sand, it's misty and grainy! (I can't find good words today so don't blame me for poor imagination ;_; )
I think you managed to get your point across, the character does seem painted and the colors suit him. And it's so nice to see a bit of purple!
Yay for weird sources of inspiration! And on a side note, this time I realized it's a guy! *feels quite proud of self*
I haven't seen the previous version but the text and flowers look OK to me, I think it's a good wall and everything is in the right place :)
Keep up the good work!
I don't think that you should have used purple; it seems out of place. I would have perferred a color like...orange rust...or something like that. But that aside, this is a well made wallpaper; good job.
