As an animation, Bakemonogatari has a simple, clean art style. But the guest illustrations for the series are anything but simple! So, it's great to see that °Tens took on a more complex illustration and made it his own with vector gradients so fine at points it more resembles painting that vectoring. Do have a look at this beautiful wallpaper!
Hiya!
A few months ago I bumped into this scan and thought it'd be fun to vector it. I decided to make it wallpaper-sized, so you guys can put it on your desktop. Plus, posting in SZ just gives the wall a bit of attention already, so I'm sure to get lots of replies for the final version :P
Anyway, I kinda finished my work on the character now, so before I start with the background, which is relatively easy, I just wanted to check if y'all think I'm going the right way with this and if there are some points of improvement that I overlooked.
Few features and notes:
-100% vectored by hand in Illustrator
-Yes that is a see-thru shirt :3
-I don't want to use gradient or pattern fills, to preserve the clean and tight look of the vector.
-The brown in the eyes is the only exception to that.
-Everything is going to be a (more or less) exact vector of the scan, so click the link above to see what the background is gonna look like.
-The scan is smaller than the widescreen format, so I had/have to draw an extra 50px on the left and an extra 150px on the right.
I'm a perfectionist, so lots of hours are put into this wall already. I hope you like it so far, but please comment if you think something needs to be improved or if something can be done different to get a better result.
Thank you.
Oh yea, has any of you seen Kodomo no Jikan? I haven't, so I have no idea who my girl actually is, lol. Based on the haircut though, it looks like that female teacher in the series (looking at other scans and screenshots), but I'm not sure. So if you know, please give me some background info on her, so I can give the wall a good title.
Wow man
good work
i like to apreciatte vector walls cause it's so hard to do
so
if you wanna make it best
i think you could add some blur in the shadows
and more details like the pinked balls on the face
etc..
good luck
i'm waiting for this wall
:)
I love it. It's so clean and bright. The vector is perfect and wonderfully detailed. I especially love the colored lines, they make it much more soft than if it had black lines. The concept is very simple and is abound in detail. It looks perfect, wouldn't change a thing.

I really like your vector but I think you should use darker outlines (let's say black) 'cause it's kind of strange the way it is now. But that's only my opinion.
Another thing: you could work harder on the background. It's too simple. Perhaps you could add a notebook or a cup of coffee on her desk to make the bg more interesting.
Man to tell you the truth its awesome. It really needs no darker outline =3 all its needs is completion.Oh and best part of the wallpaper is your sig fufuf can you tell me which font you wrote that GA from and the other too.Its really nice and simple.Very good

Black outlines is the one big mistake most people make when vectoring imo. A childs coloring book has black outlines, a vector like this should be more realistic and thus have gentle colored lines that create extra depth into the picture rather than just marking an outline.
The vector is bloody beautiful
here are my suggestions tho:
*place a shadow on the table corresponding to her raised leg
*add a few things to the table... like drawer knobs. a few sheets of paper ready to take off with a slight breeze... creating an organized mess there might add something to the overall feel of the wall.
*using a few textures wouldn't be that bad an idea either... you could add a wallpaper kind of texture to the wall... a very light texture to the table may also look good i guess.
*I think using a gradient shadow for the underside of the table would be better than just having a reddish darkness. the way it looks right now the right side of the table and the space in between look like a single piece without a differentiating factor. adding a slight pseudo bumpy bevel sort of feel to the inner edge would smooth that out :)
It' s a nice clean vector. However it needs more shading on certain areas. Currently the picture kinda looks flat. Judging from the scan there, i see that the original image also lacks shading. So i think you can further improve it by adding extra shading to give it more realism. You need to follow the light source. For example the light source is from the top. So the top half of her should be brighter, and the bottom half of her should be darker. See this wall. Notice how the additional shading makes it look so much better. Another thing you need to put is the shadows for under her leg and the other stuff on the table.
Damn!! freaking server got too much traffic and now i have to retype my comment, so what do i do? type more before i even start.
anyways....
ok, so umm, what did i say?.... argh!!
some of the areas where your layers meet are too plain. for example where the desk and wall meet, it's just two adjacent colors, and where the floor and wall meet, it's the same color separated by a line. it make the bg look rather flat and dull. true, you don't want it to steal the attention, but when it's too plain, it does anyways. i'd suggest that you add some subtle shading and possibly textures here and there. a lot of little things to give it the spacial depth and feel that is given by your vector. that by itself will give your wall the life it needs.
i will, however, throw in the gratuitous "AWESOME VECTOR!!" comment.

I thought it clearly states that:
a) this is a Work In Progress
b) I finished the character so that I can now work on the background
c) the wall is going to be an exact vector of the scan and will thus contain the books, coffee-mug and everything else on and under the desk.
Thanks Misao for your comment, I know adding extra shadows or create more realistic lightning effects will give the wall more depth, etc. , but I'm affraid that a) I'm not skillfull enough to do that without f***ing it all up and b) I want to preserve the clean and plain look of the vector, plus respect the original artist's work. You don't go painting some extra stuff on a recreation of the sunflowers of Van Gogh either ;P
But no seriously, I'll see if I can adjust some things that y'all mentioned and it'll be ok. But next time: READ, YOU BUNCH OF MONKEYS
GA, finally you placed this on the SZ ^__^
I've been waiting for this to show up here, coz was only seeing it in your UP's WIP pic.
It totally looks awesome!
What else could I say??
I'll be waiting for it to go live on the Gallery ^__^
I've got a really good feeling this will be in the Top Rated, once it is submitted :D
I'm working on the background now and there are 2 issues:
a) I don't like the decreased level of detail and the uglyness of colors
b) If you look well, you'll notice the background repeats itself:
See the cabinet on the desk towards the left? That's exactly the same as the one in the middle, just like all books that are next to it, only with some other colors.
I wanted to stay close to the original scan, but I'm having my doubts now. So I want a little poll about what to do. Should I:
1- Strictly vector the scan
2- Change colors of some stuff
3- Change colors, add/remove stuff
4- Empty the desk and put a PC monitor on there :P
I might just do #1 anyway and/or perhaps I make the books a bit smaller so you can also see the top of em like in the scan (shaved that off to fit the widescreen format better). But I need a bit of help on what to do.

Other than that it's a great wall!

Life is all about living!!...LIVE IT!
The only standout for me is the table edge could be a bit more well defined.
That's all i suppose. Good luck finishing it. ;D
