After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!
Odd. I can't seem to copy a vectored image properly from Adobe Illustrator. Whatever I do, rasterize to 600dpi, or 'select all' + copy & paste', as soon as it lands in Photoshop, it looks crappy, like all edgy and low-res. Anyone any experience with this?
It's been a full year since I've joined this site so this wall is dedicated to this website and all of its members... so to celebrate, here's a new wall! (and yay for new avatars hehe). Since I've joined I've expanded my understanding of Photoshop SO much. When I first joined, I only knew how to make collages out of scans. Thanks to this site, I discovered the world of vectoring and now painting!
Anyway, this is my first time painting so of course I have a lot to learn and improve on... But wow was it fun and challenging! I really do love painting... and it's a toss up on which one is harder, full painting or full vectoring...
Below are the details of the wall as well as a mini-tutorial on how I made the clouds. It was a learning experience for me because I couldn't find any cloud tutorials to my liking... The tutorial isn't very detailed but it shows how painting results don't show until the very end! So if you want to try it for the first time, have faith! The end result is rewarding ^^
TECHNICAL INFO
Title: "Is wishing all I have to do?" is a direct quote from one of the alternate-world scenes in Clannad. I felt it best described the feeling these two had when living in this world. They wish for warmth, happiness, friendship... and whatever else you might imagine is necessary for a happy world. It also has a sullen sense to it which is the emotion I really wanted for this wall. After all, they are alone in this world!
Hardest Part: Painting. Haha... I have such a deep respect for those who can paint well. With painting... all the lines, shapes, coloring, shading... it's all you. If you have a shaky hand, then the result turns out terrible. I guess I've just relied too much on those smooth fun vector lines that make nice curves into actual nice curves. Hehehe...
AND! The clouds... Oh. My. Goodness. Why must clouds be so....
Easiest Part: The glowing balls! And the robot - for some reason, he was also very easy to paint. Maybe it's because he's so cute (Yes, I secretly want a miniature version of him on my desk...)
Music: Chopin's 12 Etudes, Op. 25 No. 11 in A Minor... on repeat... for a very very long time.
THE PROCESS
The main element I wanted in this wall was emotion and bareness... In Clannad, the scenes with these two always moved me because their world was so barren and lonely... Although the original scan has many bright colors in it, I wanted to wash it out a bit to give it a very sullen emotional vibe. The thing these two want is warmth... which their world does not have. But of course, I couldn't wash it out too much or else it would just be too sad looking haha.
Anyway, painting was... an interesting experience.
I started with a 7000x3750... resolution (which almost killed my computer every time I tried to save for web...). I mostly used the same soft round brush (70% opacity, 35% flow) and painted away, layer by layer. I don't even know how many layers I had... it went into the 3 digits and I stopped noting what the total was. The scan's perspective was a little odd to me so I decided to change it a bit. I wanted a more panoramic wide screen look so I evened out the tilting clouds and made the grass more symmetric and even.
I started with the sky which was relatively easy. Then I worked on the clouds until they were fully detailed and colored (A more detailed explanation in my link to mini-tutorial). BTW, for those of you who want to paint clouds but are intimidated by them (I know I was for the longest time... especially with these clouds. THEY'RE MONSTROUS), just keep trying! They don't start looking like clouds until the last 10% or so of the final product.
After that, I moved onto the girl (her dress was fun to paint!). I used vector masks for selection paths and basically just painted within those selections. This helped create more defined shapes and lines. Afterwards, I created the robot - which I must say was extremely fun to do. For the robot, no textures were used - it was all brushing with the same custom brush. That's why the robot's texture is so different from the rest of the wall. If you've seen Clannad, you'll understand why I wanted to stay true to his type of texture.
Last was...... the grass. Ai... The creation of the grass started with my own strokes... then I decided to add some more grass using Nysha's smudge technique. Lastly, I worked with motion blurs to make the grass sort of breeze away in certain angles.
I finished up the entire wall by merging the piece and adding glows, mixing hues, adjusting color levels, etc... And tada! The final product!

And I just wanted to shout out to all those people on AP who like to use paint/grunge/abstract/text art/extractions/etc. Recently, vectoring has been the common style for most walls... People tend to overlook so many other styles out there... But all of these walls take a lot of time, care, and attention. So for those who continue to explore these other mediums of art, keep up the good work~! Fighting! ^^
This is so amazing! My chin almost fell plus, it's all painted
The time you spent on the clouds really paid off cos they are just fantastic.. They're so detailed and look so fluffy ^^
The title is really appropriate since they're alone
And that grass! All the details just blow me away
About the girl and the robot.. It's all so well painted and blended. And you didn't use textures in the robot o.O thats all painted wow
I wouldn't mind having a miniature robot in my desk either ^^ It's so cute
It's a fav and my new desktop
Great job ^^
It's an amazing wallpaper and I admire your effort because it was all worth it. The clouds appear so soft and fluffy, really soothing to gaze it. The grass is wonderful and the girl plus robot appears flawless. Wonderful work and thanks for sharing it!

This wall is very beautiful. Moreover, it has a special bliss in it, I'm not sure if it's the amazingly painted background or the nicely smooth and cute characters, or both together creating this astonishing scenery of peace, calm, yet a bit of sadness that gives a very touching feeling to it. All in all - a very amazing wall. Not only in the technique, but the soul too. And a wall with a soul is a rare occasion. Kudos :)
This wall is so beautiful. It almost makes you forget about the 2 chars in the center. The clouds, the sky, the grass...everything just looks so amazing. Its quite mesmerizing.
There's not really anything to nit pick actually. This just seems flawless in all respects.
Cool! Thanks for using my technique! The clouds look great too. :)
I would probably suggest making the grass blades longer in the foreground, since they seem to be the same size as those at the back.
This wall is really impressive, and you've got some skills here. I agree with painting and the clouds as being the hardest part, and half of the background are those clouds. And the grasses and the balls are just impressive as the clouds.
Patients does grant you this wonderful wall. Keep up the good work! Fave+
