the true measure of a man

There is a saying that the true measure of a man can be found in what he would do if he were never to be found out. Basically what kind of person you really are can most likely be determined by what it is you would do if you could NEVER be discovered as the one who did it. I have always wondered how the false persona a person dons when wearing a mask frees them to be who they are in their hearts. We all wear mask of some form or another. Besides the internet occasionally what other mask do we hide behind in life? and why?

It's not about masks I believe, but a person doing what he or she will do without gain. Would a man truly do good for the sake of doing good and not because he will be commemorated? Will a man do what is right without society pushing him to do so? That is what I think the saying stands for.
On the other hand, anonymity grants one freedom, the mask you refer to would render the opinions of others obsolete. One wil not be influence by others but himself and his own ideals.

I say bullshit to that. Hypocrisy is probably the core of today's society. Because people have a pattern to follow, a much easier task than creating yourself, they choose to do so, even if in due time they will completely throw what they were over a cliff. Too few are those who mean what they say and are as they appear.
This is were we've been brought to. Having to hide our true selves in order to be accepted by this union of idiots and queuing to get our daily portion of common sense stuffed in our throats.
Why would someone seeks commemoration or do anything for the sake of others? Being remembered doesn't make your death more meaningful and it surely doesn't turn you into a spiritual and infinite being...maybe. If you don't take responsibility for yourself, who should?

true... even so, it would be difficult to live without a 'mask', what with the world revolving around opinion. we only don them due to self-conciousness.
if i had my way, i would never leave my home. its where i'm most comfortable, where i'm myself with noone to observe and criticize who i am or my actions. there'd be no need to pretend to laugh when someone tells a notsofunny joke, no need to pretend to agree with the crowd, no need to pretend to care about the traumas of the world. its selfish, i know. but that would be my life without a mask. easy and simple. no good or bad to it, just me.

The majority of humans decided to create a society and designate one to rule. This one was human and so committed a variety of mistakes and, consequently, substituted. This way of living is quite better than those primitive times though it is not perfect, you must act like it is expected by others.
Considering this, masks are a very god way of saying we cannot be what we would like to be fully, only in part.

This is a question about humankind, if the human being was born kind or evil. I don’t follow this chain, I believe the human-being has tendencies to some behaviors, but the majority can be influenced. Also, it is born mind-blanked, and it absorbs what it sees and feels. Once it understands people live under rules, it begins to think about the society constitution, I mean, this whole thing is just a process. The individual will soon select a group to follow and begin to live like others.
