Silent Hill 2 is really important to me since it was the first game i bought the same day as it was out at the whole price. I don't in your country but here there's 2 great shops which are always fighting with prices; so after one week, the price goes down.
I explain, after having played resident evil 2; i was searching for a good horror game and a friend told me try Silent Hill you'll love it. After doubts because since i do not have a console, i've never played to the first ...
(i know too bad); i bought it.
I was so impressed with graphism (i had to change my vga to play it decently), the fog revealing you the map piece by piece, the radio noise at the approach of the monsters, the exploration of the town, ...
Anyway, too amazing.
In my opinion is the best for now because i haven't finished the fourth yet.
The third was good too but the atmosphere a very little bit under the level of the second.

In regards to Silent Hill II, to me it was amazingly great in terms of both graphics and storyline. I can't say that I rushed out to get this game when it came out and I am glad I waited. I am not a big fan of the Xbox, since back when it came out they kept rubbing in your face the fact you could only find certain games and Silent Hill II was no expects to the rule, some sort of extra feature. When the PS2 Greatest Hits version came out I went after that one, it came with that same feature that Xbox was bragging about. It was an extra storyline featuring Maria in another part of Silent HIll just before James mets up with her in his stroyline. I was amazed by how fluid the game play and cutscenes flowed together. The atomshpere and music was amazing. Last time I played it I had three or four of the endings and I am still going after the others. The only thing that sucks from the game is the chain saw, I get hurt trying to use that thing in combat, the board with a nail in it works better than the chain saw.

The good thing about the Silent Hill series is that the main character is the town, not the people. With this in mind, you get a totally different insight from the first game, where you -the main character- was pretty much outside the whole horror world; your only connection with it is your daughter. In the second game, you get all this sad and twisted story. Now the main character is everything in Silent Hill. The monsters, the characters, they all are there for James. The town revolves around him, and that's what I think made a difference in this game.

That and Pyramid Head, I love that bastard ^^

The best is the 2 but the room is good too (the back and forth thing is very bugging sometimes ... )

I don't like Silent Hill 2 too much but I always play with my brother and I think this is an interesting game
