Background ideas
I'd imagine we just paint massive ass backgrounds that can 'span' over a scene with a moving camera - if anyone can understand what I just said.
Any requests for background themes?
I've got a few ideas:
- house settings: bedroom, living room, kitchen/meals
- neighbourhood: streets, shops, train station (*ding the bell for shinkai-ness*)
- jobs: school/classrooms, office, restaurants
Out of all those (feel free to suggest more), are there any particular ones that are 'must have' which can get us painters started or at least get our brains ticking for ideas?
~ College setting
~ CLOUDS!!!
~ Open fields
~ distant mountains
~ Sunsets
~ Starry fields.
All pretty basic, but those are for sure some components id like to use in certain scenes.
Another question id like to bring up is color choice. Like if you notice the color choice that is used in a lot of his scenes are pretty unique. like the green glow in the starry field for this one WALLPAPER !
Much of this can't be decided until a story is outlined..
I can take photos around the city and nearby country-side if any references are needed. Other members may also be able to.
A few notes for the background artists:
Refrain from painting lens flares; as they will be animated later.
Sakura petals, leaves, etc. may depend on the scene, if there is wind/not..
At least make sure they are on a separate layer, so they can be removed if needed.
Basics: Don't directly copy any copyrighted photos or use any scans. Keep track of your sources and inspirations.
I'm aware that we can't really start on anything until the story guys have come up with something, I guess the way I work I take LoNG time to get stuff done that's why I tend to jump in early in the brainstorming process and try to get some practice runs in the mean time, that's all.

On that note, 1 week timeframe sounds pushing it but I'll give it my best shot given that questions etc posted on the forums get answered relatively quickly.
It would also be good if the story team can keep us in the loop with the latest story details so we bg team have better idea of the settings, props, etc as time goes by.
Same goes with us, we'll post latest drawings, sketches, etc here on this thread for everyone to give feedback on.
I'll check the images now.

Anyways, I get the gist. So we do an orbit shot? Is it orbit shot as in a view from the cockpit or just one of those scenic shot to help with the story settings? What about the ship - or is that going to be animated? We can do it on layers so they can be animated separately..
I don't understand the perspective images - are they just for ideas or is there any other purpose behind them?
And the launch images, are you planning to animate the smoke, or just using it as a still (not moving) flashback image? Animating the smoke sounds scary ..
Anyways, that's enough for me to get started with my sketch stuff for now, feel free to post more images esp pod interiors if you come across them.

I've posted mostly space photos because that is the only sure setting so far, and I wanted to give the BG artists some material to get started with.
Hopefully, the final animation will be largely composed of scenes on Earth, during flashbacks.
The launch images are just for reference if we decide to include such a scene.
I hope to animate the ship in 3D, but feel free to include it in your concepts.
As for the orbit shot, we will probably need a few perspectives; out the capsule window, distant shot of ship, Earth alone, etc.
Google 'lem interior' for a few capsule interior ideas.
The 1 week timeframe is just meant for sketches and research.
I'm open to feedback and crits, so please tell me what you like or dislike about these, otherwise I won't know what to change.
ship #1:

A friendly cargo/explorer crew ship of hmm .. maybe from 6-20 crew?
I don't know how I ended up with a blowfish design, but yeah, it's one idea. I thought the roundish shape might make is quite nice to model in 3D if we want to, or just stick with 2D.
PS. I know we may not need to show the whole ship, just gives me a better idea plus get the initial brain juice going.
explorer #1:

This is a single/dual pilot EVA designed to go around rough terrain complete with a big gun to shoot whatever, and retractable robot arms to examine things. Based on hamster's EVA suggestion.
scene #1:

Sorry my girl sketch turned out to be a guy lolz! Let's pretend he's a 'she'.
This is just an idea for a shot, picturing the character perhaps holding an item in her hand that brings her memory back to what she's looking at - the earth (or wherever). The object in the window is the front bit of the runway tunnel, just in case you're wondering.
scene #2:

This is an idea for the living quarters - her bedroom. Again, the window size is open to debate and so all of the interior design. Notice on the message board there are some photos, maybe that's another link to the flashback.
That's it for now, now check them out and give me some feedback! :)

Explorer - Fits in with the other designs well.
Scene 1 - Great perspective
Overall, the designs are consistant in style and well done.
Glad to see Mercedes is still around in the future. :)
Personally, I would like something more dark and serious, but we need input from other members as well..
Okay, so is it worth re-styling the blowfish idea or just scrap it and start with a different concept?ciboBlowfish - Perhaps too Dragonball-ish... But I like the scale.
What kind of 'mood' do we want to show from the ship?
Friendly or scary or 'just a ship'?
When you said the scale is good, what are you referring to?
Size of ship in terms of crew or ship size in comparison to a person's height?
Gotta run now, I'll check the story updates later.
But yeah, keep commenting!
Thanks alot Cibo for the pic.
~Slaka
What else do you guys want concept sketches for?
I can try do some terrain designs as well, and whatever else I can think of, unless there are specific things that I should be concentrating on.
Btw, any particular preferences re terrains - snow, sand, rocks?
