Design ideas
ciboUnnatural proportions? As far as Anime characters go, I thought anything goes.
There are different schemes like "cute" and "serious" for example but normally anime still relies heavily on balanced proportions.
I encouraged Yina to transfer her characters to anime style so we should get some official animation versions soon instead of trying out styles by ourselves. That will help a lot to continue the process.
nudlswhen do I start "in-betweening"?
It will still take some time until we reach point no. 5:
1. script
2. storyboard
3. character design
4. key animation
5. in-betweening
6. coloring
7. compositing
I vote on this idea. but it's not up to me who decides the story.
I am sorry, I ment to post this in the story ideas post. Also, there are alot of small loopholes etc. but we can mend them

I want to start getting some visuals across, so I made a quick animation test using what was handy; the original character sketch, helmet design, stars, etc.
This is showing the part when Selphina exits a flashback, realizing she is stranded in space:

The final feature will look much better..
And the animation will be more detailed.
*this did not take long to make ;)
Sorry it's only a gif, so there's no sound.

The cell-moving animation is just for this test, right? Because this technique won't work with detailed hair.
Also we should change the composition: You justified everything on a vertical line which makes the visuals look a bit generic. The earth for example could have been justified on a horizontical line or Selphina could have been depicted from a slightly different angle (but this may be just a problem caused by the available image footage).
Another question concerning the shading: Do you want the suit to be realistically rendered or cell-shaded as it is usually in anime?

Yeah, the final version will likely be hand drawn frames. Although we could do a complex set of vectored hair follicles that rotate and resize independently with the wind, that's not what we are really going for. I just used the fastest method to animate this.
All the angles were kept from the original imagery, and will definitely be redone.
The suit will be cell-shaded, to keep it consistent; because we will be animating it at some point.

Absolutly wonderful to see some test footage done :) I like how the character was done, I dont personally like the vectored look.
For hand drawn animation I know a few programs such as monkeyjam (for real life drawing with video input) and dogwaffle

I simply suggest Adobe After Effects because a lot of Japanese animators use it for anime. In After Effects we can combine the 3D video files with the animated cells.slakaFor hand drawn animation I know a few programs such as monkeyjam (for real life drawing with video input) and dogwaffle
About the drawing process: I will do the animation with a pencil on a light-table.
Yes, I agree Adobe After effects is the key program right now. But if you can do the hand drawn animation on a light table then okay.
Sorry if I haven't done anything yet, but my work as a CGI-Artist has took a lot of my freetime.
Today I managed to create a spacesuit-design. It's nothing special but I hope it fits to the project.

New concept-
This is a quick render of what the intro could look like. The final will be more dynamic in imagery and movement.
Fade into a background of stars and scroll through the atmosphere while a delicate piano melody plays. The camera settles on a distant, modern city; then the title appears.

The feature continues with a view in the city (music continues) and then we are introduced to child Selphina running, on her way home.
-Sorry, we don't have a title yet..

I think this version of the intro is a bit boring. There were so many interesting suggestions for the intro (space -> planetarium sky for example) so why should we choose a rather generic opening?
Also the viewer might be confused if we start with a flashback.
@ Asobinotori
I guess this version of the space suit is fine (it's individual but not too flashy).
Intro seems fine to me. and yeah... about the title.
I agree with harakiri. The intro isn't bad but it looks a little bit simple to me. It looks like something that can allways be seen in animes or movies. Maybe there is a more exciting solution for the project.
I also think the screenplay and the designs should finished at first, before we start any animationtests. The work could be a useless waste of time in this way. (I know that is also a good practice for everyone, but that's my point of view)
