Somehow, the 'living forest' idea reminds me of this. On a somewhat related note, dA has no decent tree tutorials, but I managed to get hold of a tutorial by ゆっくん and it's posted here. sorry, dunno if people actually read the news section orz
Lol at the candles thing. I wouldn't last in a place like that, I'd freak out if my only light source was a tiny candle flame ._.

But that's how people used to live D: not so long ago too. Besides, I'm bothered by the idea of designing clothes. If I let my people evolve I won't be able to keep simple designs and then I'll have to figure out how to dress my demons in the woods (demon with a t-shirt = no). Keeping everything 'ancient' is much easier... or maybe I should provide electricity but keep them isolated? Wouldn't be too hard with Shinn's idea @~1@
I totally love his pants.
Awesome tut btw.

@θDioma
when I meant civilized I was talking about that place being the only part of that wild region to be populated (whethere there's just a village or a couple of them or a city it's up to you), while we could have the rest of that region is not populated at all due to the presence of this sort of "living forest". :)
@tsu
I have a nice tree tutorial from pixiv, I'm going to include it in the compendium once I have everything done. In any case, it's no so tough and the best way to do trees is to have reference from other digital artworks. I'm trying to split the reference that I have in different themes so that people can decide what to download. An other suggestion that I gave in the past is to look at the scans we have here at AP. There's plenty of them depicting nature and they are the best reference material if you want to figure out how to do trees, foliage and so on. :)

@θDioma: i live in an area that gets a lot of snow and is windy, as that area would be, so if you want i can look up some references that would be suitable for those conditions. also, it's difficult to make the shy look cold, but it does. be careful with your clouds, big fluffy clouds aren't thought of for cold climates, there's a lot of stratus clouds, and the cumulus tend to be altogether, and don't appear as fluffy as they do in the warmer months. i can find references for that too if you want.
on another note, i really want to try to use my OAA WIP for this, but it's set in space, so it's prolly too advanced for where we're going with the technology on Arus.

LOL luna 8D actually it was the description I found hilarious; the drawing is just awesome what's this worrying about vulgarity with all the stuff that is always on the Top Rated scans?!
as for trees, I recommend this link too click Taku gave me the link. There is more stuff here too (site homepage seems to be down atm, but the tutorial pages work)
+ found this. Night scenes would mean less detail, but then the light is cool.
update on mine:
now I must learn to paint big big rocks orz also, the colors on my desktop, vs my laptop, don't match up. Does anyone know of some way to get an idea of 'standard' colors ._.
@damoser:
Either way, your idea sounds fun. It could still make a cool wall even if not for this project. =o

Tsu: i dunno if you do this or not, but when painting a scene like that, a lot of professionals recommend just laying in the colors, as you have, and work out the details with the lighting. pick your light source, and just go with it.
rocks often have sharp edges, so just keep the contrast between highlights and shadows high, and play around with some strokes. since it's so far in the bg, high detail won't matter much. and if you're using painter, try using a knife or maybe even chalk for the highlights to give you that nice hard edge.
of course, i'm not very experienced doing it myself, so my advice may be way off.

For Dioma you can use this as reference for your sky: clicky

By the way, I should be finishing the compendium by tonight, and I've been wondering how you guys would like me to group the reference. So far I've been thinking of splitting it into "Fantasy", "Nature", "Buildings", and "Creatures". I don't know if it would be better to be more specific though, so if you have any suggestion don't hesitate to voice your opinion.
[edit]D'oh, the dumb image host resized them, I'll try uploading them at my personal host.

@~tsu and Damoser: Lol no it's not going to be purple. xD Im planning on working on this pretty scan. As usual, i'll be using photoshop. But im not sure whether i will stick to this or choose something else. If i do choose this one, i'll probably alter the background a bit. Current one is too pawnsome to replicate. orz
It's ok, you don't want to replicate it anyways. you want to make it your own, otherwise it's just boring imo.
I apologize for the prolonged absence, but I was busy with the latest exams at uni. Now I'm finally on vacation till September, so I ca finally dedicate myself entirely to this project. Updates will finally be coming and of course I'm curious to know if anyone has made progress on their own works. :)
Our laziness is too obvious.
