I enjoy some good classics aswell.
Some of my Favs being mostly Piano oriented

"Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1 in B Flat Minor, Op. 23"
"Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2 (Moonlight)"
"Rachmaninov - Prelude in G Minor, Op. 23, No. 5"
"Chopin - Etude in C Minor, Op. 10, No. 12 (Revolutionary)"

I used to play in an orchestra I play the Clarinet. Very fun instrument to play!

I like classical strings, like spanish guitars (andres segovia??) or violins (Mozart, Bach, Pachelbel). i like metal too so also listen to apocalyptica, which is a chello quartet that plays covers of metallica songs and even their own in a hybrid metal/classical style

I like a plethora genres but of classical I recently came upon Dvorak. I especially like "Largo" from the "New World Symphony". I also enjoy classical koto music and because this is new to me I don't know much about it. And to blend the old with new Mettalica (S&M).

There's actually one composer that i love! Yiruma! He's the best at playing the piano. My favorite song by him is Kiss the Rain.

I love classical music! I have no real favorite artists, but any sort of symphonic or orchestrated pieces I love listening to. It may not be classic, but my favorite songs are the Symphonic versions of X Japan's songs. Yoshiki is such an amazing composer, his songs translate so well from symphony to heavy rock/metal and vice versa. It's amazing.

80% of the songs i listen are classical pieces
99.9% from that 80% are piano solo pieces.
I'm a pianist myself, currently studying hard to reach my limit, although i don't know where it will end.
My plan for this new year is to increase my skills enormous, and at the same time trying to enter the 'conservatorium', i don't know how they call it in english, but probably it should be 'academy', i guess.
I think it will be the one in The Hague or Amsterdam.

My taste:
probably the more romantic style, which will be Chopin, with some beautifull Nocturnes, Scherzo's, Waltzes, Polonaises, Impromptu's, and especially the 4 Ballades.
Besides Chopin, within the same style, Debussy and Liszt i prefer.
The other style i like to play, and listen to, is the more heavier style of playing, Brahms, Rachmaninov.

The main pieces in my reportoire match with the styles i mentioned earlier:
Beethoven: Grand Sonate 'Pathétique' (Romantic and a bit heavy)
Brahms: Rhapsodies nr.1 and 2 opus 79 (Mainly the heavy style)
Debussy: Deux Arabesques ( Romantic)
Rachmaninov: Prelude opus 3, nr.2 ( Heavy)
Bach: Prelude and Fuga nr.5 of WTK1 ( Not my style, but every pianist need to know a piece of Bach, it's a must, believe me)

I´m not that much into "typical" classic music, only some Wagner stuff perhaps (Ride of the Valkyries) but I´m deeply into a genre named "Neo-Classic" with bands like ARCANA, APOPTOSE, PREDELLA AVANT, TRIARII, GAE BOLG, PUISSANCE all of them having a very martal and apoyalytic themes. Lots of marching drums, violins, horns, trumpets etc. The genre sprang forth from the gothic/industrial scene and is small but growing. Just check myspace for some of the bands to get "an ear on it"...

I saw earlier that you go to UA. My two younger brothers attend there and are in the band. Tim and Micah Hardwick but anyways. Dimitri Shostakovich's music is awesome. I even like the atonal stuff, but then again I have a unique taste in music. My favorite piece of classical literature is Gustav Holtz "The Planets" particularly movements II and VI. They are absolutely two of the most beautiful and moving pieces of music I have ever heard. I like Tchaikovsky also, but I'm most familiar to his music from drum corps. Another favorite of mine is Scheherezade by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsako. Not just what SCV played in 04 but the actual piece of musical literature as well.

I agree with the double bass being a little too low. at my university, there's a tuba player who's freakin' amazing. He had a sonata or something with the wind ensemble. It was really good, but it just kind of showed you that really low intsruments don't have the same effect as higher pitched instruments.
What do you think of 20th century composers that wrote 'classical' style music? I like Aaron Copeland and ... crap, forgot his name. Shostikovich was good if you exclude his atonal stuff. And of course, there's the infamous Leonard Bernstein. opinions/other composers?

Anyway, i do agree with forestsprite...the cello pieces performed by yo-yo ma is indeed great. i own one of his CD , a compilation of his performace(i've forgotten the title since it is not with me...)
other recommandation, i'm not sure about it since i'm only familiar with the cello classical pieces played by him.
well...i do listen to classical double bass pieces...but, i still prefer classical music played by using cello or violin.
Even though i used to play double bass..i still think it's pitch is too low and it is not suitable for solo classical pieces. but it works well in accompaniment and also jazz like stuff..
hope i'm not out of the topic again..:faint:

Does anyone knows " Andreas Vollenweider ".A very famous harpplayer. He is not so puplic but he has founded an own category of classical music. His musik has a small share of jazz, too.

I listen to the hureley symphony orchester here and know.. and thats classic what ive know.. laso some jappanes classical instrument.. jikogu shoujo (hell girl) soundtrack has alot of that..

I occasionally enjoy listening to classical music; my favourite instrument to listen to is cello, followed by violin. Hands down my favourite piece is Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, Prelude. I've listened to it probably hundreds of times, and it still gives me chills. You might recognize it if you heard it - I've picked it out before in different movies, including Master and Commander. Does anyone else have any reccomendations for good cello music, while we're at it?

If you can stand Metallica at all you should try Apocalyptica, four cellos playing Metallica they've got some own pieces too but their version of Nothing else matters is just touching.

Damn how stupid I felt yesterday and today. Just spent two days at a friends house and she played some classical pieces with piano and kept asking "Do you know what this is?" and I knew something like 1 out of 30...
But I paid back with rock, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles and Led Zeppelin for instance =P.
