Vista Vs. XP

I'm using Vista in my notebook (Ultimate x64, 4 months), and XP SP2 in my desktop.

I'm glad with the new Vista features, but, it's very very slow. I hope the SP1 increase the performance.

When i received my notebook with the factory configuration, Vista took 5 minutes to be "usable", and ins't a bad notebook (2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 7000 series, 2 GB RAM DDr2 667, Nvidia 8600 GS 256 Mb, 2 hard disk (120+120, 5400 RPM), i uninstalled unwanted programs and services and now is "operable".

Vista is nice, but performance sucks.

It's amazing how much hatred there is out there for Vista and just how much power it has over the mass market. While XP may have had the same intro with gamers hating the transition and some stores probably advising people don't transition early into it, the OS is still rather good and will improve with maturity. Personally, I can vouch for the maturity part by-in-large, Creative not really having complete drivers and services for their devices until probably 6 months after the release, making the early experience a step below XP.

Personally, I've been using Vista for day to day use since I got my hands on RC2 and was part of some of the public testing that pre-dated the release date. For the most part, the OS has been rather good even on my ancient P4 2.4GHz single-core, non-HT CPU with 1.5 GB of ram and an updated GeForce 7600GS. It's true, the thing needs power, but most of the decent PCs and laptops in stores now have enough power and were truly built to run it, making the experience rather perfect. Still, it's the small things that make the difference, like starting programs with a simple few letters in the start menu, or having the bread crumbs in the explorer, or the new soundboard that allows per-application settings, it all makes the experience that much better. While early kinks existed, like the data transfer rates (scary!), many of the technologies included make the experience amazing, like SuperFetch pre-loading applications, a simple front end to see your PC's rated performance, the sidebar, Windows Media Center, feeling true control with User Access Control, and countless other things. Continuing on UAC, it honestly is nice to have at times, reminding you what you're doing and that it might be kind of important and intrusive to your system, not to mention allowing you a moment to think whether you really want to do one action or not.

In my own opinion, I honestly can't go back to XP for a number of reasons, so many of the different Vista features being a norm in the back of my mind and the change of going back just not work my time. The new OS is here, and SP1 will probably build quite a bit off of it, making it probably one of the greatest versions once you get the masses converting and learning how much simpler some tasks become, and how much secure they will become.

I hear all kinds of complaints about how Vista is bugged, and is having big problems, and to wait for a service pack. I have only 1 problem with Vista, and it's not a huge one. It's when i'm copying data from a DVD-R to the harddrive. Sometimes i get an error message saying that windows needs to close, and that of course interrupts the data copying. but that's it. No viruses, all programs run smoothly, and a great UI to boot. I have no problems with XP, but after seeing how much better Vista is, i don't think i'll be going back.

I got Vista on my computer for about half year and I never found one anoying glitch. All my programs are working on Vista, I never had a incompatibility error.

And on Vista, the loading (boot) is more faster than XP.

Vista looks beautiful. I haven't found many drastic changes from XP, Vista just looks much more nicely. And there still are some bugs that pretty annoy me and make me think if I weren't stupid for installing it instead of XP.
Now I'm getting used, though.

I constantly juggle between the 2 OS'es, I mainly enjoy Windows XP because of its superior speed when doing benchmarks on overclocked PC's. I enjoy Vista because is looks better and the OS has a much milder feel compared to the rough feel of Windows XP. For me, Vista Business takes the cake because of the fact that it doesn't contain the rubbish that Ultimate has such as Media Center and Dreamscene.

It matches vista perfectly.i personally bought vista home basic some months ago and it's a real pain in the head.first my pc's performance hit rock bottom.then i tried to play counterstrike in it.it did not even open.the security alert which pops up each and every time was just too tiresome for me.when i contacted the vendor from whom i bought it he advised me to upgrade my ram and install a new graphics card-i listened to him patiently,went home and installed my good old XP sp2 again.right now,my vista is rotting in somewhere of my huge collection and i am quite happy with that.

xp sp2 is way too better than vista both in terms of money,system performance,software playability.not only me,most of my friends who have used both os agrees with me and one by one they all went back to xp again.vista has only looks,unless Microsoft bring a considerable upgrade to vista,i am staying thousand feet away from it.

XP is good operative system....it has all codecs that you need and it ins't problems to install other programmes.

Vista...mmmm...well, a year ago i was bougth a new computer. but this computer is including Vista system.

the look is modern,.......but it has too problems

this is possible because my Vista system is basic
anther problem...programmes and games that you can install in Xp now, with Vista...is impossible to install it....

Personally, I use Windows Vista Home Premium and haven't regret buying a laptop with it. I enjoy the Aero visual effect - it makes the OS look so much more refined. Everything else with Vista is also just as nice - the minimize/maximize effects along with many others.

My laptop comes with Intel GMA 950 which does not have 128MB of dedicated memory, and Aero runs fine - no lag. It's not the latest Core 2 Duo processor either - I still have the last-generation Core Duo processors. Vista is perhaps a tad slower than XP, but in exchange for more refined experience, I'm willing to forgo the slight speed decrease.

I'm gonna side with Vista on this one. I've got nothing at all against XP, but I love the User Interface of Vista so much more! Yes, a lot is similar, but I like the new setup of menus and whatnot, and the sidebar is the coolest and most useful gimmick i've ever come across on a computer.

First I have to say that I'm stunned this thread hasn't turned into a flame war, like threads in Hardware forums invariably do. Congrats on being mature.
I use vista myself, since it's available for $20 at my university. And it works like a charm, on my higher-end hardware. As stated in above posts, Vista isn't nearly as mature as XP, so it has issues (more than Microsoft will admit, but less than some XP fanboys claim), but these will get better after the Service Pack, which is coming this half of this year.

I rather use XP for now.
Why ? After I use vista for 1 week (i just try it with my friend (30 days)), vista has a lot compability problem (some of programs don't work, old hardware can't work cause the driver), the security just bit to tight (but it can not hold attack from virus), take a lot of resources (not for graphical use), and it expensive.
But I have only 2 reason that vista is better thant XP (but this not change my decision after all). Vista load windows faster (but it cost your memory) and the instalation faster.

It looks better for sure, but I'm not going to move to it anywhere soon. It has bigger requirements than XP, so running it on my computer would be a suicide :P Will wait until it's necessary. Sooner or later I will have to, because of DirectX 10 :/

So there is no clear pick in my opinion.. but here are my pros and cons of vista:

Pros:
-Start menu, when clicking all programs, the menu opens up in the same column rather than opening another menu on the side and so forth
-I like the windows media center its handy central place to use all my videos and music
-I like the see thru taskbar
-I like the new sidebar with its gadgets, I like specifically the weather one and the analog clock functions

Cons:
-stupid pop up windows everytime I attemt to run a program
-can't see the progress when I am defragmenting my drive
-takes up more harddrive space

Well I use Vista, but it wasn't a choice, my old computer keep crapping out on me so I was forced to get a newer one. If I could, I would revert back to XP professional, it was so much easier to use and in my opinion, even looked better. I hate all those dang pop up messages that vista uses, and I am pretty sure that XP was just as good as vista in regards to protecting your computer against viruses or threats. If you as me, prolong getting a vista computer as long as you can until all the bugs are worked out, like 3 years...

I gona stick with XP the next 1-2 months, then gona get extra 2GB Ram (to my 2GB that I already have) and get the Ultimate 64bit, had Vista for few weeks like the Design but hated that it took up 30-33% of 2GB Ram, maybe gona get it by mid of next month for DX10. Its a good OS but all-in-all I still like XP more atm, and DX10 is not that much wroth it atm since only few Games use it. And for the Programms and Games, I had only a handfull of stuff that didn´t run, and it was not important so np on that.
