Mai Hime wasn't too sad. Grave of the Fireflies is really sad though. One of the only animes that almost made me cry. It's kinda hard watching it too because you know what's going to happen and you dont want to think about it D:

The last OVA of Kenshin. Definitely one of the saddest. I downloaded Grave of the Fireflies but still haven't watched it yet. I'll make sure to have tissues by me when I do decide to see it ^^

Eh...the most depressing thing I've ever watched was Neon Genesis Evangelion, especially the movies. I didn't like how they did the end, though the beginning was okay. I forget his name now, but the boy was so wishy washy, and the ending of the movies just *really* depressed me. I found myself wondering, after *all* that, *everybody* dying, what was the point? What on earth did you fight for?

It had a nice theme song though. :)

Saddest anime for me would be Chrono Crusade, although its not sad, depressing so much as sad, touching. but whatever

i would say wolf's rain & AIR. just tragedy after tragedy. nothing good ever really happened. alot of endings are sad: cowboy bebep, full moon wo sagashite, fullmetal alchemist, furuba. T_T & kanon.

I thought Trigun was pretty sad during parts of it. Grave of the Fireflies is extremly sad, it really makes you want to cry. Samurai X in the last OVA of it was really sad too.

I think Grave of the Fireflies, Samurai X both OAVs, Wolf's Rain and even Gunslinger Girls are all slighty depressing to me.

Air was so depressing, it actually got me to cry on three seperate occasions and I almost never cry. And the ending was just so sad, after everything that happen she still died.

depressing anime......I am surprised no one mentioned Saikano... :o Ending of Chrno Crusade was sad, Air was sad but touching also (makes tears falls couple of times), and Grave of the Fireflies is really good but really sad and depressing.

Gunslinger Girl Elfen Lied

Both had their very depressing moments.

Bebop and Fullmetal definitely have their moments where they're more depressing than anything I've ever seen...like the beginning and the end of Bebop's last episode. But since they're also composed of action and a bit of humor, they can't classify as the saddest things I've ever seen.

I'd definitely have to agree with the ones who said RuroKen's last OVA and Eva.

Bebop and Fullmetal might have some moments, but Saikano takes the lead. Its a sad story of Drama, love. There are two reasons why this is sad. Their romance is pretty crazy because Chise is actually turns into a fighting machine (made by the government) whenever trouble is near. the story takes place in a time of war so Chise is always fighting. Over time the robot inside starts to take control over Chise. She soon needs pills to stay sane. Anyways, that was the first reason why this is sad/depressing. the next is that all of their friends die in some sad way and at the end the world ends. Shuji (main character) is the only one who survives the battle. chise then only lives in his memory.

crazy, huh.

i think X was the most depressing anime i've seen so far, almost everyone dies in it, what kind of happy ending is it if all the people close to you that were worth protecting died, that said though it was really amazing, i love the artwork i love anything done by clamp, always looks cool

The saddest anime for me are Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Air and Elfen Lied. I don't know why but Grave of the Fireflies didn't move me as much, although I did feel for the guy.
