Yea the sub are different, just i just stick with 1 group to collect and the other group just to watch the next epsoide. then I'll just watch the 1st group i'm collecting from

I don't really know which groups are better so I wouldn't know if their transltations are right. I notice some of the translations I got have a lotta typoes though...

I visit a site that has a list of fansub groups. What I do is look for the ones that have a lot of projects, because it means they know what they are doing and have a lot of experience. I usually stick with the version of one fansub, because each of them may use a different slang, so it's a bit shocking to grow used to one and then read something different.

But for some animes that are rare to find i try to download several versions, because some are more accurate than others. These kind of groups focus in only one or two projects (which they worship in their sites) so getting the eps is a lot harder and quality may differ.

It does bother me when one group stops subbing and another (often lesser known group) takes over the project. But even if a twenty groups all sub a single series, I doubt that none of 'em will be able to provide a good, exact translation. That's when a bit of knowledge about the Japanese language comes in handy. As I watch more subs, switching between different sub groups becomes easier 'cause when the translations read funny, all I've to do is stop reading and listen in for the gist.

Sometimes it's impossible to translate 100% accurately some things in japanese, because they have an xclusive meaning in their own culture. That's why some translators try to use a joke that is known by the leechers, trying the best to make it have sense with what's shown in the anime. The most tricky ones are the words written in japanese. Different kanjis with the same pronunciation can mean a different thing, and this is used as a joke a lot of times.

I just stick with one fansub group for each anime that I watch and it's usually one that is recommened to me or that I just like due to their expreience in fansubbing.

i usually pick the quality...which one has the best, i download from that group. Though it's usually the famous/common groups that are the better then the others.

Yeah, i know. we're talking about subs. The problem is, no one can tell if they're right or not. The only way we can solve this problem is if all the fansub groups get the same subtitles, translated by the same person (which is very unlikely).

i dont know coz mostly i dont care i can handle any of them LOL i watched gundam seed and everybody called Asuran Athrun and other names have been spelled differently in every episode...

I prefer Asuran over Athrun...

I just stick with the group with the best transaltion and quality n sometimes i just go on anidb to check which one is rated higher...

While most fansub groups have varying degrees on the translation quality, it all depends on the translators doing the work on the Japanese to English conversion. Different translators have different styles when it comes to this art so I guess it all depends on their level of professionalism. SOme translators may be more apt to work from the basis so that English speaking anime fans can understand the anime they're working on while other may do a more loyal translation of the anime. But mostly, I've discovered that in general, most of the work done on a particular anime that is released by various anime groups are generally similar.

well for me, I usually get the anime from the fansub group that I have already tried...

its true that when you watch every fansub group of one anime (like for example during the Full metal Panic 2nd raid) there are diference in how they translated but almost every one who subbed FMP 2nd raid is similar (since I've watch and compare Anime-Shrine, Bakazou and A-one/Anime Kingdom) so its up to you what fansub group that you've like...

Most fansub groups honor those companies who license anime here in the states with the exception of one ... Media Blasters. Media Blasters has always taken such an antagonistical approach to any website providing links to another website where one could download torrents of an anime that they haven't released yet.

When an anime is licensed is licensed most groups remove it but there are a lot of fansub groups whop have taken a defense against Media Blasters because of their attitude toward these groups.

My roomie usually gets the ones we watch, but they are typically done by the same group as long as they are consistant. There are times when the group we are watching will make one in a really odd codec and we can't watch it so he tries to find another using a more compatible codec. I have one of those Phillips DivX DVD players so if it doesn't play on there, I get miffed. :mad:

Also sometimes there's only one group doing the translation on a specific anime. Like Rockman.EXE. So far, only WPP has been subbing it and its been taking a reaaaaaly long time to come out with more eps. So sometimes it would be nice for there to be other groups to choose from. Because even if the translation isn't as good as someone else's, its probably a lot better than the dubbing job done by 4-Kids or Viz.

Mai-Otome came to mind.. both Do-Re-Mi and SS are doing it.. and I have to vote for SS. They were the ones behind Mai-HiME, so they know what they are doing. And Do-Re-Mis version sounds just awkward after seeing an SS episode ^^

this is a good question, but you see it's all about the balance between original direct translation of a sentance and translated meaning, you see what i mean is that some fansubbing groups do the right thing and give us clean original as close as possible translation whereas other groups (these one i like) go that little bit further and modify this so that we as primitive english viewers (with a totally different culture) can understand exactly what the character is meaning and not just what comes out of there mouth. and there also is the problem that when something is subbed by one group, the other groups tend to stay away from it and so you get only one group doing it, but sorry i can't go naming all the good groups cause there are many. (just look for the ones with the highest hit counts and they should most likely be the most trustworthy)

sometimes all fansub screw up some dialogs, no big deal, just stick with the ones you like because of: fonts, way of speach, release times, size of files, or anything, as long as you get what`s goin on they did a good job.
