Subs all the way for me I can't stand the american dubbing it is to much for me to stand. When watching a swedish cartoon I want to see it in swedish, when watching an american cartoon I want to see it in english, therefore the same with japanese cartoon it has to be on the original language.

Defineatly watch it in Japaneses with subs because in English it just sounds corny and the translations aren't always correct and not as mature.

Well I personally watch in japanese and read the english subs, mostly because I feel the japanese pull off the whole voice-act thing better than how english dubs can, there's just those intonations that japanese has but english doesn't. Then again good english dubs (while rare) are tolerable for me ~

Japanese with english subs its just a universal law that must be followed :P I just cant stand the dubed accent and everyone sounds the same, well to me atleast. Original is just the way to go

Japanese with Subs. Usually. Sometimes I prefer the dub. Very rarely tough.

Japanese with english subs its just a universal law that must be followed :P I just cant stand the dubed accent and everyone sounds the same, well to me at least. Original is just the way to go You know on the reverse side it can easily be said that all the Japanese voices sound the same too. Now of course we all know that that is not true. Although in reality the main difference is that Japanese has access to a wider range of actors willing to do voice work than other countries (not just English speaking countries). Actors do tend to get used more frequently in those cases. And not getting over the accent...what makes the Japanese accent preferable over English or German or even a Spanish accents (sorry I don't know what country you are from so I just chose some random languages)?

Some people have said that they hate the English accent without giving reasons so I am curious as to why they hate it? Is it just prejudice or is it something more tangible? Preferring Japanese is one thing. That's personal preference. Its something else to say "I hate this________*insert accent, voice actor, language, etc*" without saying why. It just makes you biased at that point. *note: directed to all who read this thread

I would choose to watch it in Chinese. Because it is the language that I most familiar with. Though I have been knowing that some of the meanings delivered in Japanese would be omitted when translation have been made, I would still accept the Chinese version. Because I think those omitted meanings are not very important for me to enjoy the anime. The reason for why they are being omitted is often come from the difficulty in translation. And difficulty in translation often come from the cultural difference. If I watch the Japanese version, I think I would still not understand those meanings, so it won' t be more interesting for me to watch it in Japanese at all.

When I was little, I liked it in English. But that was when I haven't yet seen a Japanese one with subtitles. I prefer Japanese anime with subtitles because they seem more natural and, for me, the Japanese are better at doing it! XD

japanese all the way .....i think it has sth to do with the sound and pronounciation of the names , screams and words that fits more to be in japanese rather than english. Afterall japanese sound quite cool ..and most of the voices are perfectly fitting to the characters ( except maybe from DBz where all the Son- family could have better voices)

Dunno english in anime always sound too....american to me .

I prefer Japanese (w/sub or w/o sub), but English is fine too.

I think it really depends on the series. I rarely watch a dub these days but there are a few out there that really take the cake. For example watching Ghost Stories dubbed is hilarious. They took a Scooby Doo and the 13 Ghost type series and instead of translating the D...possibly even C at best script and actually made it into a better series by just making jokes and references to everything from Hollywood it's home of Japan.

I usually aim for Japanese, hopefully without subtitles. For the most part, English dubs don't seem that great, with a few exceptions like Ghost in the Shell.

Japanese audio and English subs XD Don't like dubbing and wouldn't understand anything without subs, so the choice is obvious :P The funny thing is I don't like watching anime with Polish (my mother tongue) subtitles although I understand it much better that way :P

i gotta agree with most. with japanese audio and english subs you get the best "feeling" voices and stuff just fit better. most likely coz in japan they find the person that suits the character. if they dub it in english only in the "big projects" the dubs are good. for example princess mononoke wasn't too bad

Well, I used to watch anime dubbed or subbed in English a few years ago. I can't say that dubbing always sounds awful. For example, I enjoyed watching Inuyasha with American dub. Though many people are right saying that English staff is never better than that in Japanese versions. The reason for that is quite simple. There are some phrases that are very hard to translate and to record with suitable intonation without losing any piece of their original meaning. That's why I believe it's better to watch anime in Japanese. But since I don't know that language well enough yet, I usually watch it with Russian overdub. At least that allows me to hear both Japanese and Russian voices, and I don't have to read subs.

Some people just like hearing the Japanese voices. They don't know what's truly being said and they don't care. To them (those that just like hearing Japanese) its just sounds in the background because they're too into the show. A lot (not all) of pro-subbers just like hearing the Japanese voices because it sounds different than the languages that they are bombarded with on an everyday basis. Not because they think its of superior quality. I don't know about nychi002 but From what I've been able to gather from my own experience at conventions, a lot of the pro-subbers I met don't understand Japanese either. Again, they just like hearing the Japanese. Therefore their "ability" to discern the quality of subs is not that great. Frankly speaking, those that understand Japanese are the only ones who can really discern the true quality of whether or not a sub is good or bad. Just like how a English speaker is able to tell if an English dub is good or bad.
