well..the mid-autumn festival or as known as moon festival is on next week and i just wondering what things are like in other place of the world. It is a chinese festival and i've just found a site about it http://www.chinapage.com/Moon/moon-festival.htmlIn Malaysia, we can see stalls setting up in the malls selling moon cakes and lanterns. There will also be some activities among the chinese society....anyway, feel glad that i can still enjoy this festival even though i'm staying in a society of various races....XD Now, i'm away from home, but still have the chance to hang out with my friends eating moon cake...and fooling around with lanterns...XD We are planning a gathering this year and hope that we will not disturbed the others by being too excited...:faint: Last time when i'm in high school there are some dedication programs where you can dedicate lanterns to your frineds...i get one from my best pal which is so touching. Plus, i can see some chinese family around my housing area worshiping the moon since some chinese still stick on to the old custom. Anyway, hope to know what things are like during this time of the year....Mid-autumn festival will not be the same without lanterns even though i'm 20 now....lol ( kids like to play around with lanterns.....XD )

Mooncake, sound pretty tasty. Is it nice? I would love to have a taste it, but it seem like i won't get that chance -_-

My chinese friend celebrates it every year, it look really nice, like a matsuri style that japanese people have. I want to participate.

Moon cake is tasty :love:. I love it to pieces ^^. And yeah...it's on the 18th...but for me, the Autumn moon festival was always more of a time to get good food than anything else. It's a huge eating holiday...kinda like Thanksgiving almost except turkeys are replaced by much tastier moon cakes ^^.

Also...*am chinese* and I was not aware that my people worshipped the moon.....at all....>_> *rakes brian* Seriously, what is this moon worshipping you speak of?

Hey naquarianna~ I dont think u suppose to worship the moon... mid-autumn festival is for the whole family to gather together, isnt it? there's a chinese saying abt it~ "people and moon are both round(reunion)" (hard to translate~ hehe)

I dislike this festival minorly for one reason. I eat too much mooncake and gain weight. ;_;

Other than that, the festival is a blast. We usually go to a party, which is worth the while.

Um...clearly my sarcasm was missed.... Reesha said that her Chinese neighbors worshipped the moon and I was confused because I was sure that no such worshipping actually existed. Or at least it hasn't for centuries. I didn't want her to think that it was something that is part of traditional Chinese culture. It was meant to be comical/silly. In anycase, I know the Autumn Moon Festival isn't about worshipping the moon...that was rather the point of what I said...¬_¬

Ice Cream Moon Cake? Really? I should cry. However, when I eat the moon cake, I like to eat the salty egg inside. That is the best part. Anything else......forget it.... Even I live in OC, I couldn't go to any moon festivals because of work and blah blah blah. I used to go when I was young. Our group made a big star lanterna nd won the medal. That was the first and last time I made something. It is not fun when they have the moon festival here. I wish I was still in VN. They have a lot of lanterns and it was fun.

It feels like the festival just passed not so long ago. Boy is time sure moving fast. >.> Personally, I hate those mooncakes. I mean, yes, it tastes okay. But to have a whole box of them - eh. They're really filling and can get pretty bland after a while.

Does Haagen-Daz still have the mooncake ice cream? I saw the advertisement for it like 2 years ago but I figured they stopped making it. xP

Anyway, the chinese society in my university just held an activity in the campus last sunday...there are games to play..mooncakes...performance....plus, lanterns :) Most of the chinese students do attend the activity and it is kindda fun...since we get to stroll in the park where there is a pool in my campus. The place are full of colourful lanterns. naquarianna, About the moon worshiping thing i mentioned earlier....there are still 'some' people pracitsing that kind of custom...i mean a small minority since some people do believe that there is a goddess living in the moon...anyway, it is only a legand since we know that moon is only a planet...correct me if i'm wrong :fanit: lastly....it is about reunion with the family i miss more since i'm away from home...:(

Yay!!! I got to actually go to the festival today!! XD My cousins and my auntie went along too, but they had also gone yesterday. I saw a couple of my friends helping out at the festival to keep things orderly. There was so many people!! It was so crowded! lol My mom bought two boxes of moon cakes today and other groceries. There were so many stalls to shop from and lots of games where you can win prizes. ^_^ There was a booth selling all sorts of Naruto stuff, like headband thingies, wristbands, t-shirts, keychains, buttons, etc. My cousin Tenny had bought this metal naruto necklace thingy there yesterday for seven bucks. It looked really cool, but I didn't feel like buying anything. Even though I didn't take a closer look at what they were selling, I had a feeling a bit of their merchandise was pirated lol Not that it's hard to find pirated stuff in chinatown. Overall, I had a pretty fun day ^_^

Interesting festival. I've never had a moon cake, but I used to love moon pies when I was a kid.

I'm ready for Octoberfest. Who wouldn't love a festival of beer? God bless those Germans. I'm so ready I started celebrating in August!

naquarianna, About the moon worshiping thing i mentioned earlier....there are still 'some' people pracitsing that kind of custom...i mean a small minority since some people do believe that there is a goddess living in the moon...anyway, it is only a legand since we know that moon is only a planet...correct me if i'm wrong :fanit:

Ah. That's what you were talking about. I was extraordinarily confused. In anycase, it isn't really a goddess living in the moon. The story goes like this: A long time ago, the Earth was surrounded by 10 suns. The suns shone down on the Earth and scorched it causing many people to die and made the land unarable. A strong archer named Yi saved the people by shooting down nine of the suns, and for this the people made Yi their ruler. Yi ended up being a tyrannical ruler obessed with his power and youth. He decided that he wanted to retain his youth forever so he stole the exilir of life from a goddess. Yi's wife pitied the people and was unwilling to see the people suffer under her husbands rule forever so she secretly drank the exilir so as to prevent her husband from doing so. As she drank the exilir, she started to float upwards and eventually she flew all the way up to the moon, and that is where she has remained forever. Yi devestated by the lose of his beloved wife and awakened by her sacrifice, supposedly started the autumn moon festival in her honor.

In anycase, I think the vast population of people treat this tale like the Greeks treat their ancient mythology. It's part of lore and tradition to tell this story ^^. And yes, I do believe that some people still believe this tale to be true, but it's not so much moon worshipping as paying their respects to Yi's wife. Which was why I was confused when you talked about moon worshipping because I have never ever heard it being called that.

Haha! You don't have to be a kid to play with lanterns. =P After all, adults make the lanterns most of the time! Well in Australia (southern part, in Victoria) most asian communities celebrate the Moon Lantern Festival at this time of year. Although it is not as fun like in the actual asian countries, there are still the traditions. Groceries selling moon cakes, lanterns and the stuff. In some communities they also set up a night for the kids to enjoy. One of those is the Vietnamese community not far from the are I'm living in. I'm 22, but I still enjoy it. ^_^ After all, you get excuse for going out and meeting the ladies that are still young at heart! Lol! Well that's what I think if I had the chance to go! So busy with other things, no time to go to such a wonderful festival like this one. I went once, but there wasn't really much to do for my age so I stopped ever since. But it's good to see the old traditions still being observed by the community. I hope it will last for generations to come if not for eternity.
