Does anyone else here read them besides me? I have lots of friends that are into manga, and lots of friends that are into superheroes but I am the only person I know who enjoys both. Manga, imho is better but Wolverine, Spiderman, Beast and Batman still have a place in my heart.

i personally LOVE comics. i took a long break from them since my teens but have recently gone back to them. trying to catch up on some of the stuff i missed. i actually like them more than manga. don't get me wrong, manga's great but comics are better. just my opinion.

but i don't see why ppl can't like both. they both have their good/bad qualities. and it's all just fantasy anyways. lol, it's not like either of them has that great of story lines anyways, i'm just there for the art ;P

The book Understanding Comics by Scott Cloud had a pretty good chapter on the differences between Eastern and Western comics. It's a fascinating book, taking the form of comics to explain the underlying metaphysical and artistic machanics/influences. I think it's still in print.

But as far as American comics are concerned, beyond the stylistic differences, they have the same power to move, to effect, and to just be fun as their Far East counterparts. Both have masterpieces (The Dark Knight Returns, The Watchmen, V for Vendetta/Buddha, Akira), and both have their fair share of pap, along with everything in between. But Batman still wins against anyone else, East or West.

SpiderMan is one of my favorite, but then they make about 4 different comics and you need to buy all to know what happens

Don't worry, you are not alone. While i was growing up i had hundreds of comics (mainly spiderman and X-Men) these were my main influence. Now however i am into anime and Manga but that will never depreciate the fact that it was spiderman that there during a large part of my life. American comics are still great but, for me at the moment, Manga is greater still as it can provide more comedy than seen in American Comics.

I love comics !! My prefers : battle chasers, spiderman, x-men, ultimates... For me, they have a place more important than the manga in my heart. They have a good story and good characters but it's different which manga. Comics are a little more expensive than a manga but remain as well.

I've always considered spiderman and some of the others as cool, but it was only recently have I started getting the comics. I get the monthly spiderman and X-Men comics and am considering starting to get the batman ones.

Hmm. I like DC, but only because of Batman. XD I'm not an avid reader of comic books because I didn't like that they were so short.

I don't know why I like Batman...I guess cuz he's the only superhero(?) without any real super powers... He's just really rich and well-trained. XD

I really liked the novel version of No Man's Land...and the comics with Cassandra Cain in it...although I haven't been able to find any more with her in them at the library or the stores here.

... Yeah. I basically randomly start reading a comic from wherever it looks interesting. If it's interesting enough, I'll do some research and find out as much as I can.

Batman seems to have gotten much more popular since the Christian Bale movie. I went opening night to see it and got laughed at by several people because it was mostly kids there. Now that the movie has been out for a while people are starting to respect Batman. I don't know why Joel Shoemaker (not sure how to spell his name) had to go and make Batman Forever and Batman and Robin completly ruining the respect Michael Keaton had earned for him.

I like comics too, but not as much I like mangas.

I have comics of Spiderman (The Maximum Carnage series is really good), The X-men and The X-Men Hidden Years (this title is really good, the drawings and the story is very interesting), Spawn (A awesome title from the master Todd McFarlane), I alos have a few comcis of The Transformers (Actually this comics are better that the animated series) and finally I have comics of Tomb Raider and Wolverine.

Yes, with the new movie of Batman, the character have a new reputation from the fans, but I think that series like Justice League and The Adventures of Batman help him too

My brother was a big Fan of DC Comics. We had everything from Superman, to Batman, Wonderwoman, Super Girl, Spiderman, Atom, Green Light (Guy with a Green Ring), Flash. I was allowed to watch the Pix although I couldn't read at that time. But once I could read, I read the Comics of my big Brother. I bought Spiderman, when I was about 12.

Yeah, i love american comics too! I'm a great fan of Xmen, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Flash, etc... I think my favourite superhero from any american comics is Batman... Cause he's a normal guy afterall... He doesn't need any super powers to fight for what he believes is right... He's risking his life each time he tries to save someone... He deserves respect!! ^_^ But anyway, i still prefer manga!!

dunno why - I never got "into" comic books... even though I'm an artist and have been drawing since as far back as I can remember... U'd think I'd have been a shoe-in for getting into comic books (when I was a wee lad)...

looking back maybe it has to do with the super hero costumes - I always felt (even as a little kid) the tights and capes n such smacked a bit of being a bit "limp wristed" if you know what I mean... that just didn't float my boat so to speak.

that and the over the top cheese filled story/plot lines... I hear that later on when the "graphic novel" came to be the stories and art got much better but I guess by then it was too late for me... I was already in college by then... was more interested girls and cars... ;o)

it's hard to go back to small-time characters like spiderman after reading power-cosmic stuff. only one i would consider buying is batman (just finished no man's land, art kinda sucks but the story is nice and dark).

and on the subject of the christian bale movie, i really think dc/marvel should keep a short leash on ppl that make their comics into movies. more often than not the comic is ruined by the garrishness of these movies they make. i'm curious to see how they did on v for vendetta. i'll always go see these movies but i always go away from them disappointed....even the spiderman and xmen movies sucked. though i guess it's better than nothing...
