Hi everyone. I haven't posted much on this site but figured I would get some pretty good feedback since there are such a variety of people. Anyway, as the title says, I am going to Japan. I've set the date to be in July so I have about 6 months to get ready. I'm going to be self-studying Japanese but am also thinking about getting a tutor. What I would really want help with is this. For people who have already done this I would like to know what their challenges they've faced while in Japan. Maybe some tips on where to live or how to find apartments. I've done some research of my own but would like to see what others experiences are as well. I'm thinking I'll probably live there for at least a year so I'll also need to get a job while I'm there. I'm going to save about 5 to 6 thousand dollars before I go there, and make sure I don't have any payments happening in the US.

If anyone has any information they would like to share it would be greatly appreciated. I know I've left out some things I would like to ask but can't think of them right at this moment. I'll probably be posting on this thread depending on what kind of responses I get.

Thank you once again for any replies.

first of all soz my english, when i need to explain a little i talk so baaad :P

i went to japan in 2006, 20 days

well i can tell u some things that maybe help u:

--money:

-traveling around: if u arent japanese Japan Rail Pass ( JR pass )helps a lot, search info, its very very VERYYYY usefull!!!!!!! ( u can only buy it outside Japan!! )

-tourism oficines and japan oficial and controlled ryokans: if u ask for places to sleep, go to the tourism oficines, the ryokans are so great, cute, cheap etc, i sleeped 8 nights in kyoto like 10 euros/night!!!! ( so cool place! )

-food: search always ramen/udon places to eat, and some days u want to eat better go sushi restaurants etc. The morning and night its better to buy in a 24h shop and eat fast in the room, then go out and spend time in better things that look for a place to eat!

--places: if u want to go around and spend a lot of days take a look and search info of that places i put here:

-miyajima ( all island ) -himeiji ( castle ) -matsumoto ( castle ) -all kyoto ( spend 1/3 time here, and lots of things to see yet! ) -tokyo: -akihabara ( my ipod!! 1/3 price! free taxes ) -shinjuku ( government free seeing place at floor 45 ) -harajuku ( afternoon ) / shuibuya ( night ) -tokyo tower / tokyo bay -nara ( all city, yum yum todaiji ) -hiroshima ( all city is so cute and interesting )

Well, I can't speak Japanese well, but I live there.. There are a lot of japanese who can speak English! Well, 1st thing that you need if you want to have fun is money! Then try to eat Japan Traditional food.. It's yummy! I'm sure you like it, and you will eat more if you try one! You will have no worry if you had a tour guide, coz he/she must be know a good place at japan! Well, my fav city is Kyushu (Great hot spring, and food)! Kyoto (Nice panorama), Tokyo (Well, it's nice there! Went to akihabara, and you will fnd lot of unique thing to buy, with low price! It's cheap! And went to Tokyo Tower! It has great view to the city!), and my most Fav, HOKKAIDO! (Great panorama, kind local citizen, nice hotel, Yummy food, and you can learn bout their culture there! It's awesome!)!

Well, there still lot of great places! Those up are my fav!

Best advise I can say is when you eat ramen or soup. make sure you make a lot of noise! For some reason in Japan and in some Asian culture, that is compliment to chef that they make in great food. And do not use chopstick and stab in the rice cause that will make people freak out (it's traditionally said that is act of offering the death!)

^^b other than that, good luck and have fun. Btw, bring extra pair of shoes cause you wouldn't able to find any shoes repair shop easily ^^;

The main thing you need to know if you're going to Japan is the tradition of that country. ^^ They're a polite persons, and have a very high politeness, far from the other country(for me.^^). And the second thing is the language. ^^ Even you can't learn it quickly, but after you go there, you'll be slowly learn the language. ^^ And the third thing is the home. ^^ The home in the main city is usually small, and their apartement is so small too. ^^ Maybe that's all. ^^

that's some pretty handy info there, as i'm planning on going to japan next year for a holiday. I am hoping to save around $5-6,000 if not more to actually do some serious sightseeing, travel around and buy stuff :D

I have wanted to go there for ages, even before i ever really got into anime. I've just been amazed at the culture, the temples, the ancient japan too and the samurai and so forth with the honour they had amongst them and so forth

Well thank you for your replies. I would certainly like to visit a lot of the places mentioned while I'm in Japan. Experiencing the culture is one of the main reasons I'm going.

I would still like to know if anyone has any thoughts about finding a place to live or finding a job if possible. That's one of my main concerns right now which is why I posted this. Anyway, I'll PM some of you also to get some further ideas and a little more detail.

Thank you.

When my brother and sister graduate my mom will take them anywhere in the world. My brother got to go to Austria and my sister will be going to France at the end of this school year. The thing is, in less than 4 years, it's my turn and you can guess where I'm going since I'm typing this here.

WARNING! ONLY READ UNLESS YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHERE I'M GOING! I'm going to Japan! So I will be able to use this information when I go if I can still find this in 4 years.

Still, so lucky! *Doing the animated face with an "X" for my mouth and my hands are ball shaped and I'm waving them back and forth slightly.*
