G'Day,

I was wondering if there were anyone here who uses The GIMP for making wallpapers. I run a GNU/Linux box, and The GIMP is the only decent program I have access to, however, I have never made a decent wallpaper with it. Perhaps I simply have no tallent to begin with, but I would like to think it is just inexperience with the tools I have available. I have received some advice from Photoshop users, and been able to make some significant improvements, but it is always difficult to say the least, as tools are located in different places, called different things, or simply do not exist.

I was first curious if there were anyone out there making any good wallpapers with The GIMP: if there are not, I may be fighting an uphill battle. If there are any here, I was wondering if you had any general advice, or could suggest some tutorials which would be more beneficial to a GIMP user. There are a lot of older or obscure titles out there which need more love, and I would like to do it, but at my current level of ability it is impossible to do a series justice.

If you would really like some tutorials for The GIMP, try: Pixel 2 Life - It is a tutorial database for many software. I often use it. Hope this helps.

Nearly anything relating to wallpapering that can be done in photoshop can be done in The GIMP. There are plenty of people here who use GIMP to do wallpapers (I mean, still a minority, but there are users). I myself am a photoshop lover, but have had to use the GIMP on occasion while working on Linux machines. Once you get used to using right click menus instead of tool bars, it's pretty cool. The only thing lacking is the diversity of brushes. I'm not sure how the GIMP compares to photoshop in that respect.

I use GIMP constantly, but I'm not a master waller. I just started, really. I've used it for the past two to three years for my artwork and it's been great. (I should mention that I use the Windows version.) Some of the main differences I've found with GIMP and PhotoShop is the brushes, as mentioned (although the newest version, 2.2, seems to allow you to customize your brushes a little more) and the Filters can be lacking, although it has the basics. I wish I could download GIMP filters somewhere.... For the most part, I've been able to look up PhotoShop walling techniques and have been able to follow them. Usually things are just named differently, but sometimes they don't exist.

My advice is just keep practicing. Keep following any tutorials you find. Keep playing around with GIMP. You'll get it. Here's a wall I posted to SZ earlier. You can look at that to see if a wall created with GIMP is any good or not. (It's not posted to the gallery because I need to get better scans.) Please don't critique, I'm just posting it to let you see what a GIMP user has done.

Thanks for those replies. The tuturials there have given me a few idea to play with, and it is nice to know that there are people out there successfully using this tool. I think this should help me to get a little better, though I still have a long way to go.

That Belldandy wallpaper is far better than I have been able to manage so far too ;)
