This is just an idea, but I thought I'd talk about it here and see if you guys like it or not.
It's been a while since I've been actively "lurking" on pixiv.net, a sort of japanese digital art community. Among the things you get to see there (besides tons of artworks), there's also a side project that they started, named Pixiv Fantasia. What is it? It's a fictional fantasy universe created by all the artists who partecipate in this project: what they do is create artworks of the world, setting, locations, characters and so on of this universe, and creating its "Lore". It's a great idea to let everyone toy with their imagination and work together.
Now, what I've been thinking is, why don't we "import" this idea and start a similar project at this group? The difference would be that, rather than making "artworks" in general we'd make wallpapers instead (scenic ones, of course). For the charcters we could either use our own original art (for those who know or want to give it a try) or we could use artist's scans, the one that are not related to any existing anime/manga/novel. The project would have no deadline (as long as we keep producing something related to it it's fine), and we could opt to work in collabs (or alone) if we feel like it.
So how does that sound? Just thought this would help the group be a little more active and something else besides the monthly contest. It'd also be a challenge for people who want to try create their own fantasy/sci-fi settings and incorporate them as part of one universe/world. :X
If there's enough people at this group (atleast five or six) who like the idea we could give it a try.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure there's even six active people who check this group enough to reply here. X_X

sounds good to me.

sounds interesting. :] and i can actually do projects (or i hope so, at least). that's a good thing because even two-month-long contests are difficult for me. i try to plan for them but i always end up running out of time. and i fail enough at scenic that it takes me a billion years to finish. xD;

As long as no deadlines are set, I'm in =D

No deadlines at all, this is a side-project. Anyway, I count atleast six people here (of course the more we are the merrier), so I'd say that we could officially start this?
We could proceed with the following steps: 1) A name for the project/fantasy world 2) A map of the world, or atleast a sketch of it 3) How we "generally" want to organize the fantasy world and such (we can define all the specific details gradually as we create wallpapers for it, that's the point of the project afterall) 4) Make the first wallpaper (or two) for the project, as a way to advertise it so that more people are aware of it and might eventually want to take part to this. The first wallpaper(s) could be collabs, this way we could show that it's also a joint effort and not just everyone working solely on their own (of course if one wants to there's no problem either).
Once we come up with the name (step 1), I'd say we can create a thread for it (and eventually sticky). An other note, if anyone is making a wallpaper for this project, whether it's a collab or not, feel free to discuss about its work in progress, concept and whatnot with the others. I want this project to be a chance for everybody to also share their knowledge and collectively improve, besides making something fun and challenging.

I'm not good at thinking up creative names, but recently I played a game, and I quite like the map in the game ^_^
I was thinking of dividing the map into several sections, namely Heaven/Residence of the Deities, Hell/World of the Demons, Human World, Island of the Royalty/King and a abandoned land/Wasteland. Of course, we should come up with names for each of these places, but they are merged together in a single map. If we feel up to it, we can add another location, the ocean (and we can create underwater wallpapers < 3). With this, the scenery in our wallpapers for this project will be interestingly varied.
For now, members should be free to create any wallpapers they want from each location, but once more members join in this project, maybe we can form different villages, and the members in a 'village' will concentrate solely on expressing their own location through their wallpapers.
Er...do I make sense? =D

this sounds interesting =] i have always wanted to create a fantasy char.. like the ones on games

@fye-lover
Sure it does make sense. We can decide to either make one single continent divided between different regions, or a couple of continents like your example. We should have a vote for this. :D
I'm thinking about a name, doing some research with some ancient names so that it has some degree of credibility. Or whatever. If you come up with something, post here any idea.

I was thinking up possible names today and I liked this one.. I noticed that the map that was posted looked like a series of islands so I started researching japanese folklore and I found a tale called Momotaro. There is an island in this story that the boy travels to slay evil creatures that live there. The island is called Onigashima. It means "Island of Oni" (oni are demons). I thought Onigashima would be an interesting name to call the project.

Hmm.. that could be a name for one of the regions or for a specific place. I was thinking to remain more on the "typical" fantasy fanfare, as that could allow us to be a little more creative with locations, since that's the whole point of the project in first place. We can have different regions and continents of the world with different styles (some that may reflect a more western-fantasy look, others that may reflect an eastern/asian look). Right now I'm thinking of something along the lines of Escaflowne's world, or even Final Fantasy's Ivalice in terms of how it's composed. Different cultures and looks but overall they're still "coherent". I don't know if that makes sense, heh.
Anyway, keep proposing names, then we can make a poll and let the majority decide on which name works best, keeping in mind that the kind of project we could be going for.
As for my suggestion for the world's name: Nalea . I got it with one of those random fantasy generators (lol), but I thought it sounded well enough as a name for a whole fantasy world, since it's not too specific. In my opinion a world's name has to sound a little generic, it has to convey a fantasy vibe but nothing else. Specific names have to convey specific regions, towns, locations and such, but for a world I think the name doesn't have to carry too many levels of meanings, as long as it flows nicely.

what about pangea.....i know it's not exactly original but this whole concept of one content with many zones and etc kinda bring this to mind
for those people who might not know...pangea was the super continent that later split into all our individual continents we have today ..the main reason why it came to mind lol

I like the name Balaji as a world name.
We are going to have 5 different sections of the world right? names for the different sections: Onigashima Rama Milan Chesmu Helki

Before deciding the "sections" of the world, let's do the world's name first then we'll do an "introductionary" wallpaper to this world and then we'll plan the amount of continents, areas and create a map of it.
As for "Pangea", it's a good one but if possible I'd like you guys to suggest original names that haven't already been used. I'd still go for a similar kind of name though.

I like the idea of a original name aswell, maybe everyone could come up with one name and we could start a vote.

*shrug* like i said.. it just popped into my head because of the similarities
