This is just an idea, but I thought I'd talk about it here and see if you guys like it or not.
It's been a while since I've been actively "lurking" on pixiv.net, a sort of japanese digital art community. Among the things you get to see there (besides tons of artworks), there's also a side project that they started, named Pixiv Fantasia. What is it? It's a fictional fantasy universe created by all the artists who partecipate in this project: what they do is create artworks of the world, setting, locations, characters and so on of this universe, and creating its "Lore". It's a great idea to let everyone toy with their imagination and work together.
Now, what I've been thinking is, why don't we "import" this idea and start a similar project at this group? The difference would be that, rather than making "artworks" in general we'd make wallpapers instead (scenic ones, of course). For the charcters we could either use our own original art (for those who know or want to give it a try) or we could use artist's scans, the one that are not related to any existing anime/manga/novel. The project would have no deadline (as long as we keep producing something related to it it's fine), and we could opt to work in collabs (or alone) if we feel like it.
So how does that sound? Just thought this would help the group be a little more active and something else besides the monthly contest. It'd also be a challenge for people who want to try create their own fantasy/sci-fi settings and incorporate them as part of one universe/world. :X
If there's enough people at this group (atleast five or six) who like the idea we could give it a try.

Actually I thought dam had already voted in the second round, but yeah he didn't. Which means Arus wins!
Took quite a bit more than what I expected, but the project finally has a name, haha.
World's name: Arus Project's name: Arus Fantasia
First thing I'll rename the thread with the name. Now on the next two steps: - Start mapping the world. For this task, rather than having everybody decide again, which would take us a longass time if we have to vote every time for each little name or addition, I thought that we could have one, max two people work specifically on creating a map of the world. Volounteers possibly. :D - First wallpapers to start advertising this side-project. You can portary any location, specially ones that haven't been mapped so that the people who are working on the map may easily think of "where" to place them in order to have some degree of coherence when creating the fantasy world. I'll remind you again, you can work on your own or on a collab (whatever you prefer), and you can only use artists' scans or original anime art if you are confident enough (or if you find someone who wants to collaborate with you and do the character art).

i would do the map, but seeing as i'm working 12 to 13 hour days right now i'd likely not be the best candidate for the job, that and i'm lazy.
i have a WIP that i might be able to incorporate into the world, we'll see. otherwise i'd better get some of this other stuff finished before i start anymore.

also, a question: -Do we have to stick to a certain time period (ex. Medieval, Present, Future, or a mix-up with different countries having different levels of fantastic stuff/technology yadda yadda)

on a random note: ah, it brings back memories of summer 2007, the War. i was worrying about putting a hood-and-robe-wearing-girl in front of a futuristic metallic cityscape. and baka-james said: "hey, just remember, the Jedi wear hoods AND fly hovercrafts and wield light sabers!" and i think it's the lack of sleep but when i read your post for the first time, i somehow saw "yoda" somewhere... probably "yadda" colliding with a word containing "o". xD;

As for your question, there's no problem having different levels of technology, or making a mix of them, and of course this expedient can be used to furtherly differentiate countries or regions if you wish.
I'd also like to get started with producing something, but I've been thinking that I'd like to work in collab, so if anyone wants to collab with me just let me know.
It'd be also interesting if we could make a list of the people who currently are (or are planning) working on a wallpaper, and what they are working on. I would also want to encourage people talking about their work in progress, ideas, concepts and whatnot so that we can share them between and try to keep a certain degree of consistency within the world we're creating.

should we decide that we want a desert, and should that desert have an oasis, i could use one of my existing WIPs. the plant colors are already abnormal, as far as earth goes, so it could work.
i said i'd share my progress on it here anyways, so i might as well upload it somewhere, but i'll have to resize it first. i'm working on it at 4 times it's actual size so i can see what i'm doing with the little details.
