This is just an idea, but I thought I'd talk about it here and see if you guys like it or not.
It's been a while since I've been actively "lurking" on pixiv.net, a sort of japanese digital art community. Among the things you get to see there (besides tons of artworks), there's also a side project that they started, named Pixiv Fantasia. What is it? It's a fictional fantasy universe created by all the artists who partecipate in this project: what they do is create artworks of the world, setting, locations, characters and so on of this universe, and creating its "Lore". It's a great idea to let everyone toy with their imagination and work together.
Now, what I've been thinking is, why don't we "import" this idea and start a similar project at this group? The difference would be that, rather than making "artworks" in general we'd make wallpapers instead (scenic ones, of course). For the charcters we could either use our own original art (for those who know or want to give it a try) or we could use artist's scans, the one that are not related to any existing anime/manga/novel. The project would have no deadline (as long as we keep producing something related to it it's fine), and we could opt to work in collabs (or alone) if we feel like it.
So how does that sound? Just thought this would help the group be a little more active and something else besides the monthly contest. It'd also be a challenge for people who want to try create their own fantasy/sci-fi settings and incorporate them as part of one universe/world. :X
If there's enough people at this group (atleast five or six) who like the idea we could give it a try.

@damoserConsidering that we're doing an entire world, placing a desert somewhere in one of the regions is no problem at all. As long as we get started so we can gradually define the general details. :)

i should have some time today to upload a sneak peek at what i have so far. i might just show all my WIPs in my journal.
though i want to use as much of my spare time right as possible, right now, trying to make an entry for the wacom contest over on dA, cuz winning that would just be BA. unlikely that i would, but you never know.
if i get an entry done you guys have to go look at it, and fave it, if it is favorable of course.
edit: ok here's the wall i was talking about. i'm still cleaning the line art. i only colored the parts i did so i could figure out what was what in the image. the original scan is here.
and i added some of my WIPs in my journal, for any who are curious what i actually do with PS.

@dam: ah that one. looks good so far. the extension of her kimono seemed a little weird at first because of how oval it was, but meh. just wondering about this one fitting the rules though, since it is tenjou tenge. :O

Yes, guys remember that you can only use a scan that's from an artist category (or your own original art), but not a scan that's related to a specific anime/manga/game category. I should make a stickt with Arus Fantasia's project guidelines to clear things up.
@asaPM and email are fine for me, I don't use MSN that much (more like I don't use it at all). :)

@asa: oh yeah, i completely spaced that. oh well. and yeah, i drew the kimono prolly about 15 times, and this looked best with how the scan was. it seemed to fit the perspective and style and the existing lines better than anything i drew.

Alright, did the project guidelines and stickied it. Now I need to know if dam and kuryuki are collaborating on the World's Map creation or if dam wants to work on his on it. Also, if other people are working on a Arus Fantasia wallpaper let us know it here, I'll add their names to the list of active users. And be sure to talk a bit as well (wether you need inspiration or ideas that others might suggest you) on what you're working on, it's still a group project afterall.
Right now me and asa are still planning/deciding on the general concept of the wallpaper, I think I found a suitable scan for the first wallpaper of the project. I want it to be somewhat of an introduction-kind of illustration, so it's definetely going to show some depth and maybe be a wide scene. You guys might also want to keep this in mind if you feel like doing the same, or you may still want to jump to some specific idea or concept (like illustrating some city or some very specific element, like a building or a creature or whatever).

For inspiration purposes I've been thinking to gather some links and/or stuff, and some general pointers. I'll eventually update the guidelines thread with something related to it and also link it here. :)

i'm thinking of making one with what i would imagine a sunset from a blue star would loo like.
the white light would still allow for the same color spectrum, but instead of having an orange tint, as our sun does, there would be a blue tint to it. at least, that what i would speculate. i'd prolly find i'm wrong if i research it... so, i'm not gonna research it.

I've been stalking this thread for a while, but I didn't have the guts to join the group, because I suck at making BGs and much more at making scenic ones, haha. But I would really like to participate! I want to make an introductory wallpaper too, but I just need a general idea of what one of the countries are like so that I can draw a suitable character 8D
It would be fun to collab with someone who can make a good BG for me, haha.

@luna, we are the ones creating the world, that's the whole point of the project. Since we're still at the beginning you have all the freedom you want when designing a country, and that goes for its inhabitants as well if you feel like doing their character design as well.

Guys, you can decide what wall even before the map is done. You can create/illustration a location and then the people (in this case dam) who are working on the map will decide how to place them, you don't have to wait for the location to be created on the map first. Else where's the whole point of making you guys use your imagination if you wait for somebody else to feed you with the idea? ;D
