Hi fellow people of SZ. I say one never outgrows the help of SZ so i'm here, posting up a vector i'd been working on. i must say that it is NOT yet completely finished (i still have to do the details on lacus's kimono and obi, so ignore the flaws on her) but i was a bit impatient to do something with it.
erm so this is taken from a magazine spread. a vector done by 99.9% pen tool, which i've never done before. (i always went with polygonal lasso and never had problems...) i wanted to make one of those night time festivity scenes and all that...but i also wanted to make it like the original, with fireworks and stuff, so i'm thinking about two version. which one should i start on first? [PS: could this vector survive as a scan in the scan gallery? did somebody already submit something like this? all in case i feel like sharing this vector after i'm done using it. ^^]
so i have the "sky" no stars no details. but they are gonna come. don't complain about that yet! this is in DEVELOPMENT. haha =] so tell me if there is anything to fix or improve with the vectoring! i'm self-taught so any tip is appreciated.
and a note for MELLY: go on a hunt--i left you some imperfections to point out for me! just so your job of being the extra picky person is easier. xD though of course, they are not HUGE flaws. then i'd be too compelled to fix them. lol

Hmm... Yeah, the vector seems to be very well done, actually. My only complaint-- which isn't really valid-- is that it's Gundam SEED. SEED I say.

@ nanuk: um what's that supposed to mean? o.o you hate SEED? (anyway just in case you do: i'm working with it for the sake of the art, not the anime. i'm a death note fan now. haha...took just one manga. but i'm also watching eureka 7 and finishing up fma.)

wow, and I just happened to stop by here to see if you've posted it yet, haven't even replied to your pm. it's very very very detailed. go you! ok first char. (from left) you have some jaggy edges on the neck. and do i spy with my little eye a color leak on the right side? also, the shadow on his right eye needs to connect completely, you've got a small patch of normal colored skin there.
second char. jaggyness on top of the hair, and a very square chin, you should round it a bit more, also, the pattern in the shadows of the kimono should make it look more like actual wrinkles in the fabric, the lines shouldn't connect as perfectly as you've made them. and you have a lot of jpeg artifacts in the kimono shadows as well.
third. color leak on the eyewhites, and I think you need a very slight black outline all the way across the top of her teeth. also jaggy lines on the kimono. I saw something else on her earlier, but I cant find it again.
fourth.
color leak on the chin shadow, he's ORANGE! and his nose looks a bit too far away from his face. also, with the black background, I can't really tell, but the way his hair cuts into the fan is kinda funny, maybe extend the actual color out a little bit, so the outline isn't so huge.
wow, that was fun! I really had to hunt and peck for all those errors also, lol, but I promised you i'd pick apart every little detail.
just think of how much more i could find with a grey background. lol. i'll come back and play again later ;)

haha, athrun's neck. well i don't know why it (and some lines) look jaggy when i've used the pen tool...and they all looked okay in my psd. anyway, i'm just at a loss as to how to fix that. xP and hey, yay you picked up on cagalli's squarish chin! lol i left it that way after i felt too lazy to change it and had to shut down my computer for the day...or night.
about the wrinkle and pattern on cagalli. T_T you are so mean...i don't want to fix them. *stomps foot like a little kid* they looked like that in the original and i have no clue how to "fold" them...and am also too lazy haha ^^; but i'll remember that point. though i do NOT see the artifacting. o__O oh well, it's a 1280x1024 wall so i'll save it at higher quality when i finish my final version. the max file size is in the 800s kb anyway. i normally make 200-300 something kb walls.
ah, lacus's teeth. lol it was like that in the original, but if you insist, i'll go outline it all the way. and kira is NOT orange. >=( xD i do spot a lip shadow leak, just not the chin one you talked about...unless we are referring to the same thing. and the outline of his hair isn't thick...it is actually the shadow part of his hair...lol but that was something i had to reCG in, along with that part of cagalli's fan, so i'll go fix it.
about the color leaks though, i don't spot what you mentioned, unless you could the kira lip thing. hold on...i think i might just get what you meant with athrun's neck. but the eyes thing i don't get. however, for your 100% satisfaction (watch my face -___- xP) i'll go over athrun and lacus's eyes, though lacus is very pale.

Wow Asa...
This is a AMAZING vector! of course you know I'm not a pro in vector at all but it really looks great!
I would LOVE to see fireworks on the background... And if you can add some ligth effect coming from the fireworks, it will be DEFINITLY in my favourits as THE ONE! ;)
But really if you play with fireworks it would be GREAT to have this light effects on the faces... I'm really waiting for the next step to comment a bit more...
HEY... On the third character... on her kimono belt... It's like you have a line with a little black dot on in... It's pretty strange... On the second horizontal line when you compte from the top one... Tell me if you don't see what I mean! ;)

i hope you are still in SZ, zazou, because i DONT get whatyou are saying. do you mean the third character from the left or the right? the pink-haired one (lacus) or the yellow-haired one (cagalli)? because if it's lacus, well, her clothes are all rough. if it's cagalli, i have to add that point to my list of small details to tweak. ^^
and yay, okay, fireworks it is then. i'm a self-taught vector-person...but i'm not very good with lighting. so bear with me if it might come out looking bad. ^^;;; anyway, thanks for looking here zazou. and also for your encouraging response. you can keep me sane while melly picks apart my work =D...though she called you a devil, didn't she? lol

Well you can call me devil also cause I really wish you could make those lighting effects I'm asking for! :p But I'm always supportive with you cause if we aren't, you wont post your great wall except if 100 persons tell you they are GREAT! :D *running away as fast as I can*
About the character it's the third from the left... So the pink haired girl. On her kimono's belt... I'm gonna try to spot it for you! ;)

So it's on her pink belt... On the second line from the top... You have this little black outline on a spot... I can tell you better for now... :-s

@zazou: who would have thought, a nice devil! lol well let's just say public opinion is important to me *runs after you waving a big broom and a pitchfork*
anyway, fixed a couple of tiny things. i experimented with some dodging and gradient for lacus's belt to go for a look other than the "crisp and distinct" look of vector most people do. i did a VERY ROUGH background of fireworks. YES i know there are some BAD CUTOFFS. i'm sorry but i did say it was rough work. i just thought somebody would like to see it with some fireworks, but i have to go back and blend them better. take note that this is the first time i've actually tried to blend stuff so be patient with me. ^^;

i just love it and want to eat it:P.. love the fireworks and want to see them finished. try to put on a dark blue gradient and some stars and/or the moon halfway behind some clouds, just don't take the focus away from the fireworks. hope to see the finished wall soon :D

The pink belt is nice this way. About the fireworks, for me you should put them on the left top corner cause they are suppose to watch them and right now it's not really OK...
The fireworks look too real of course.. Especialy because you vector your characters... Euh... Asa? I think you gonna have some troubles with the shadows... The way it is your character can't be standing during the night.. They look clear like during the day... If you want to make it like that you gonna need to darkned them a bit... And to fix the shadow of their heads...

hey asa, don't have time to pick this apart today cuz of work impending, but check thisfireworks tutorialor you could try the cutout filter on your fireworks, that's how I made my bricks and wood anime-ish. then put some lighting effects on them like the 5 lights down and make it colored and very dim lights, that should highlight the colors for you. as for your wrinkles, maybe use that polygonal lasso that you are so fond of, and just skew it in that newly found (for me) edit, transform option.
and yeah, I read my post and I was like, all of this is way unnecessary, but asa wanted me to be picky, so I guess i will.
the jaggyness prolly came from when you re-sized it! and I swear there were artifacts in there, but you know anyway that that's an easy fix.

ahaha, i have two devils commenting on my wall ;P zazou can be devil #1, since she became the devil before i "asked" melly to be picky. and melly can be devil #2. i wonder where's my devil #3? deku-fairy once also threatened to be a picky crit for me =( but she's not here. lol. i'm surrounded my evilness! xD
@devil #1: here's my pain. you see, in the original spread, there were fireworks covering the area behind the four of them (but it would take forever to reCG and vector those fireworks because there's text and i'm feeling lazy right now)...and they were this bright in the original as well. my explanation for the fireworks would be they are all over the place....as to the brightness, well >_<
@devil #2: i'm going to do the lighting later, just trying to fix up the fireworks. thanks for the tutorial but it is going to produce the same fireworks over and over...i wanted it to be a display, you know, all kinds of fire works. and i totally SUCK with paths. xP and the blending i did in multiple layers to get rid of the "smokiness" in between the bursting fireworks, so basically that meant that instead of having a pure black background behind the lights of the fire works, there used to be puffs of color. i used the multiply blending mode to get rid of it...but if i "cutout" filter it, the stuff comes back and it looks horrible. T_T
any ideas?

hmmm, well, you could try to do it like the neon lights I used in the zangestu wall, of course, you'd have to modify it a bit, here. but that does give it cool lighting effects. or you could try to extract the fireworks.... (shudder) or you could look for fireworks brushes, but that's prolly what you've used, eh?
oh yeah, and just to make *me* devil #1.... you really should make the fireworks reflect in their eyes.

neon doesn't seem to work on your fireworks tut product, melly i mean devil #....2 (must be eviler ;] to get that number one spot). so i still have yet to do anything to the fireworks, though if i kept this for my own desktop, i don't really care one way or the other. anyway, i just thought if i were to keep your interest, i'd have to update. i tried to make "lighting effects" which imo turned out horribly. o__O look at the upper left hand corner firework, devil2, and you'll see what it looks like "cutout filtered" and you can compare it to the one from before.
yeah...i wonder where everyone...or just the few others went off to, including devil1. if zazou doesn't return, then you'll automatically be promoted! ;D

umm, ok, i really don't like the starburst on your charachters, I think it was better without it. something you might try as for fireworks... make a new image, and make it black, go to render, lens flare then go to the filter gallery, do water paper then smudge it to a fireworks shape, then go back to the filter gallery, and do ocean ripple, then go to filter and then do crystalize I did this in about 5 minutes, because I was mainly playing around, but it turned out ok, it's definitely more cartooney than yours, but the ones with the cutout didn't look too bad. I didn't really smudge it like it was supposed to be smudged either. basically I'm saying with a little bit of playing around with the lens flares and the different filters, I think you could make some pretty awesome fireworks.
oh yeah, then I went back with the paintbrush on overlay mode to give it it's color.

I have to agree, the fireworks just don't go with your characters very well, especially the one in the upper left hand corner. I can sympathise with you though, however, about not wanting to vector them, so I will say that you should at least check out that tutorial mellykilll, I think it was, went to you. But, if that doesn't turn out well, I think you should either look for another stock image, or think of something else to put in the bg, although the fireworks as an idea is perfect.

Wow... good job on the vector. It must've taken you a pretty long time. ^^
The only thing I thought I'd point out is that I feel Cagalli's kimono patterns need to be modified a little. I'm not sure how it is on the original scan, but it looks unnatural simply because the pattern (look at her left sleeve) seems to be continuous even though the kimono's supposed to be creased. Cagalli's left thumb knuckle can afford to be a bit less big too. Everything else has already been mentioned by the rest (and fixed I might add) so good job!
I agree that fireworks might be good, but you might want to consider very carefully the positions of the fireworks. IMHO, I think you shouldn't have too many fireworks in the background. You should probably concentrate them on the upper left hand corner (near the direction they're looking at) and place maybe some clouds and a moon on the right... That might make the wallpaper more balanced and believable (instead of having them seem to be looking away from the action).
Won't go into nit-picking since you already have two devils doing it for you. ^^

@devil2: (if zazou is gone for one more day, you get your promotion xP) i'll try filter-playing for the character-light-up fireworks, but not the actual. because, sorry, but i find it a funny looking "firework" xD *laughs, chokes, coughts, dies* anyway, except the golden one, the cutout filter really doesn't do anything to the other fireworks. =/ they just stay pretty much the same...unless i DONT blend them at all, in which case you see whole huge messes. OMG, i like said in the PM: i don't want to be bald. T^T
@lukas8me: well you just contradicted what melly said, with the whole which-firework-looks-better. and you don't think these fireworks are stock? o__O what else could they be, i wonder? no brush goes this detailed...or realistic, not that i know of. and i already saw melly's tutorial and i already partially applied it and i already commented about why i don't want to use it only for my wall. but i thank you for liking the idea of this wall. =D
@boomboy: nooooooooooo...don't pick on the vector plz...i'm in no mood to "crease" cagalli's sleeve. i want to get the bg fixed. and ssshhh, don't get melly started on that whole folding issue again. and as i explained to zazou--the fireworks are ALL OVER THE PLACE and thus behind them AND in front of them. there can only be a couple of fireworks in that corner and i don't want to smush them. besides, it worked out that way in the original spread. and thanks for not becoming devil#3

Ok Asa you procrastinator where is your other wall!!!! I've been waiting for it!!!!.......But onward to this one. Go ahead shoot me sorry for not being here. But since I'm am now, and I swore to get pickier as time goes on, I'll fight for slot three. :P However, I suck at being mean.....Anyway
Take away that awful light on Athrun and Cagalli have they got scurvy? Ok from the left like everyone else.....
Athrun: Other than the scurvy! On his right cheek (I think its Supposed to be hair) there is a spike going UP into his cheek. If it was hair shouldn't the spike go down? I think Athrun's hair gets a little too black down near the bottom.
Cagalli: Shouldn't Cagalli and Lacus switch fans.....they'd match better. But that's not really important. Ok Cagalli has scurvy too.... On her right sleeve there is an indent, just above lacus's fan. It's like a crease but not. The indent is filled in with the same bright red which makes it look odd. If it is supposed to be behind, make it the dark red or, just do away with it entirely. Not sure that made sense..... Also, to be the devil, you really should make the fold on her left sleeve. In Cagalli's left eye she has a small white bleb which I feel should be black. It's at the bottom right of her iris.
On to Lacus: Maybe its just the fact that kira is so tan(not a bad thing) and Cagalli and Athrun are yellow.... But Lacus looks very pale and gray.
Kira: Fine by me except for his teeth leek into his upper lip which looks funny to me. Complete the black line and all should be well.
Now for the sky.......: Put some faded stars in. I realize the that they won't be very visible because of all the fireworks but they should still be a hint of them being there. The fireworks are fine but I also think that the purple one in the top left should go. And just a random idea but you know those Japanese red party ball/lamps that they hang up....maybe you could put some of those up. But that might make it too busy.
This is the longest critique I've ever done.....
And now for the love lol can't resist. How the heck are you sooooo amazing at making walls?!!!!!!! I can't believe you can vector this (almost) perfect. And I love the whole thing. Whenever I get around to picking out a photoshop or something you must promise to be my sensei!
