I don't know much about DVD burning programs other then the WinDVD that came with my drive a couple years ago. Is there any 'professional' grade software out there? The only thing that comes to mind is Adobe Encore, but I haven't really seen it around much in stores or online. Also, how far does the average program let you customize the look and function the menu screen(s)?

DVD-Lab Pro is also very good and more advanced than other DVD authoring tools. It can allow you to create menu(s) by scratch or just a simple movie-only DVD (pop in DVD and plays without menus).

Most of the existing tools are either very expensive and hard to master or are limited in implementing DVD specifications. Many tools that are often marketed as advanced or for professional use are actually only more expensive consumer applications with pre-cooked DVD structure and questionable user interface.

Nero is a very simple DVD authoring tool, and there are even more digital media projects you can create: make your own professional DVDs, compose beats, edit videos with transitions and menus, compress to various profiles (Mobile, Portable, Standard, Cinema and HDTV), burn a CD/DVD, design CD labels, and much more. It's crazy.

When I'm just copying a DVD, I'll use DVDecrypter. The program was shutdown, because it was too good, but you do a little searching you'll eventually find it.

Nero is excellent for burning just about anything you throw at it. I've been using since version 4 for copying games, and making data discs.

For DVD editing, I use Sonic's MyDVD, which is good, but can take an awful long time to use (it's very slow at encoding the video to DVD). It has a very easy to use interface, and a nearly infinite ways to design.

It's a very professional program, but it's not exactly n00b-friendly

Well... if you just wanna copy DVD's you might find DVD Shrink a pretty good choice, it's small, easy to use and imo it has lots of options, but if what you want is to create DVD's I recall a program that I used that was pretty good, lots of options and stuff and easy to use, but I don't remember it's name... I do remember it was a "bonus" on my videocard bundle.

To the user talking about DVD-Lab Pro...Its amazing! I use it alot and get professional results! But you need to have some design knowledge or else it won't turn out well... For most of my menus I just import something from photoshop and then link everything together...

For burning the DVD I just use Roxio - I've heard it is better than Nero with the new release!

Well depending on what you're going to do with the program.

If you're going to create your own DVDs, such as your own videos with menus and stuff, try DVD-Lab Pro. If you're going to copy commercial DVDs, try DVD-Shrink. If you just want an all around program for everything, from DVDs to CDs, try Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.

I thought about the Roxio Program, as well as the Nero. I decided on Adobe Encore, though, since it's by far the most customizable program out there. (Plus a lot of the menu design elements can be done with photoshop.) I like the freedom of designing menus from scratch, and being able to choose exactly where each leads to. It's sort of ironic, though- only after I ordered the program did I find both Roxio and Nero Cd's hidden away in my desk. @_@

Hmmmm... well there are many good ones actually. If you want something basic I'd say go with something like pinnacle studio 9 or 10. It gives you good transitions and effects things of that sort. If you are after something more professional and high tech. There are many good ones, one I'd recommend which is already above is Adobe Premiere. If that doesn't do it for you, because I know it can tend to have problems running on XP Pro SP2 I'd say watch it with that one.

Another one, which does many more wonderful things like adding effects things that Premiere can't seem to do I'd say go with adobe after effects pro. It has many wonderful features, such as, keying which I find very useful. This is for when you want to blue screen something or green screen and take out the background and composite things into another location. After Effects is a compositing program, but it is also an editing program as well, it has many other features as well, if you try it I'm sure you will like it.

However, if After Effects can't do what you are after, go for something more advanced like I'd say Digital Fusion. Similar to after effects but more advanced this program can do just about anything. From cleaning up video to making someone look like they were in the artic. Like After Effects Fusion has a compositing based system, but goes beyond After Effects and Premieres limitation. Might be some what expensive, but there are 30 day trial versions to try out on these systems. And they all work wonderful.

The Final program I'd recommend is Sony Vegas Video Audio. This does both audio and video editing. A cool layout and you can import Sonic Foundary Sound Forge files into it if you are looking to clean up or alter some sound some where. Rendering might be large, but it can be compressed. It's a great program easy to use, and renders easily, but slowly.

Well I hope that helped on chooseing some video programs there are a lot more out there, you just have to find the right one for you. Each one has its own unique feature that sets it apart from the rest making them specialized on certain parts of footage.

I have Nero Express on my computer at home... but theres no DVD burner (it looks like it tries to burn dvds thru the CD burner, but its too slow and probably isnt burning to the disk) =X Apparently its a really good DVD burner, I should get a dvd rom/burner when I get a new harddrive (if I can get another copy of Nero, it was installed back when my computer was fixed after it crashed a couple of years ago)

I just use Nero, but then again, I only burn Data DVDs. It's pretty easy to use and it does everything I want. I am thinking about getting a different program, though, so I might try some of the ones mentioned above.

If you want to use Nero, I would recommend Nero 6. The 7. Version is too ... fat!

Nero 7 works great for creating your own dvds and menus and so forth. It also can reencode your movies to make them better (for bigger file size) or worse (for smaller file size).

The best DVD burning software for backing up your DVD movies is a combination of 2 programs both by Slysoft.

AnyDvd & CloneDvd2 Slysoft Website

AnyDvd disables any copy protection and CloneDvd2 burns it. But please own your DVDs.

Well, don't really have much of a problem now, since I've got Adobe Encore. However, it's pretty picky about the video sizes, and when I convert to the right size the subtitles are cut off. >_> Right when I designed an awesome animated menu, too...
