Here's a little summary to get things started and for those who haven't seen the series.
Plot Summary: After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.
I think that FMA is one of the greatest animes I have ever seen. The story was splendid. It started off somewhat slow but the pace picked up unexpectedly with it's well thought out and elaborate plot twists. Just when I thought I had the story figured out, something unexpected happened and I was left speechless. The story also has a good balance of humor and sorrow and in most cases, it was very thought provoking. Truly a work of art.
The characters were very likable as well (although some people thought Al was kinda annoying). There was a great deal of character development and characterization, especially around the main characters; Ed in specific. I loved how Ed's personality changed from being ignorant, unsure and somewhat naive to being melancholic, resolute and downright serious as the anime progressed. Of course, it wasn't just Ed; there were many character developments among both the protagonists and antagonists (does Lust come to mind? ^^).
All in all, this was a great anime and definitely one of my favorites. I think I should go as far as stating that it was one of the few anime with a really good dubbing. For those of you who haven't seen the series, I recommend that you do; however, it will take a little patience for the story to pick up.
For those of you who have seen the series, what do you think of Fullmetal Alchemist? Discuss.

a good series or movie for me has always been defined by the message it leaves for you to think. Although anime almost always present messages these messages are often directly said and not left to ponder on. |(o_o) FMA left me a lot of things to think about specially on the area of the price of what we must pay for something we want. Equivalent Exchange. with that (plus the great art and plot and humor) this anime deserves to be credited as an excellent anime. P(T_T)

It's really good, I watched all the episodes over the summer in about 2 days. It does make you think a bit, but that isn't a bad thing. The art style is different, but really good. The characters look more like real people.

I think it's really interesting when you compare the story of Ishbal with current events. Ah tI loved the characters in this anime as well as the development of the story. Ah the journey of youth and the discovery that all is not black and white.

Full Metal Alchemist was an interesting anime. It was good, held my attention through about 15 episodes, then kinda went south. I stayed with it, saw it till the end and regretted it badly. Point is, the anime sucked. The manga however was amazing, and something definately worth the time to read. So yes FMA in the end is another anime that should have waited for the manga to finish before it was made, because the whole story of the anime after like 30 epsidoes is just a giant WTF happened to my anime.

Simply because the anime didn't follow the manga doesn't mean it sucked. The anime was different from the manga but it was still awesome. Quite frankly, I sometimes think whether it was the attention of the producers to deviate from the manga from the start. It was all done so well. Also, the anime took a different path but managed to retain many different aspects of what makes a beautiful story (character development, a deep plot, etc.). In personally enjoyed the anime more than the manga (though the manga was good but I never got around to finishing it unfortunately).
I know it is your opinion but to say something like, "the anime sucked because it wasn't the same as the manga" really pisses me off. I mean next time when you watch an anime, watch with an unbiased perspective. And when you make a bold statement like that, make sure you give strong reasons for your opinion similar to the reasons I gave as to how it is an awesome anime.
Because in the end, the anime did not suck, you just didn't like and that's a shame.

I think it's the best anime ever! Well, I usually don't like those kinds of anime, but this one is definitely special 8)E It has become my number 1 anime, and I think it's a masterpiece! The plot is simply outstanding, and the development gets complexed as the series go on; there's always a surprising revelation :P I like the concept of Alchemy and the questions asked on the Equivalent Trade... Actually, these questions are like "what's the beginning of the world?" and each person has its theory about it, like Dante and Hoenheim (is it how you spell his name? (o_o))
Ed's character is so cool! I like the funny parts, especially when Ed becomes annoyed because of his height! (so short!!! :P sorry...) (XD)
And, yeah, I've watched the movie! I think it's great, though some people didn't like it at all... Well, that's their problem.
I don't know where you can watch it, I bought mine...

BEST ANIME SERIES EVER! IMHO :) that's after seeing a fair share of anime, this one blew me away, addicted right off the start after seeing Ed and Al try to bring back their mom.. *hooked* :D
Even got my friends hooked haha, after seeing only a couple episodes.

Yeah, heehee like a lot of people have said the anime is truly addicting. Once you start watching it, it's awesome; the plot pulls you straight in and you always want to know more. The characters are awesome and like in the first post stated have all been really well made and all that. I can compare this anime to one I honestly dislike: Naruto.
Naruto is very dragged and dull. There are too many characters to give it depth for every one of them and the episodes are all too similar (this is towards where the fillers come in) -- they all go on missions, some bad guy comes Naruto gets a little beaten up then gets mad and beats everyone up. Very dull.
But FMA, on the other hand, has a very indepth plot and is so intriguing, it makes you want to watch it forever and when the ending comes along you think, "hey! it's over? Aww. X(" and you want more. Naruto, to me, makes me feel like, "Zomg, when is it going to end? D':"
So, to me, FMA is an awesome anime even though it does have some deep stuff in it unlike some of nowadays "shallow" animes if you get my meaning. ^^

FMA was the anime that dragged me into anime in general. Ever since I watched the first episode, I wanted more. And when I finished the series, I moved on to the movie, the OVAs, and the manga, which I currently follow. It's a wonderful story that combines both magic and science into a deep plot which unfolds with every episode, and likable, flawed characters who develop and mature throughout the story (Yes, Lust does come to mind...among others, like Ed and Roy).
Plus, it has historical undertones - as we all know, alchemy in our world only existed in the medieval era and was not as magical or as versatile as alchemy in Amestris. In the second to the last episode, we catch a glimpse of London as it was being bombed by zeppelins, even. As in, our London. It was quite interesting, our world being the other side of their Gate. XD And of course, the movie takes place mostly in Munich, Germany, as Hitler rose to power.
There is so much about this anime I want to say, from how it has a little bit of every genre - like comedy and drama; there are episodes that are extremely light-hearted (episode 37 anyone?) and those that are really serious and sad even (episode 7 T_T), to how the plot goes on; not too fast, and yet, not too dragging.
FMA is awesome. I would recommend this to any anime fan - that is, any fan who can stand the violence. But it's not as bloody as other animes, which is also another plus. Anyone who hasn't watched FMA is missing half their life. ;)

Oh no I'm not trying to argue that the anime sucked because it didn't follow the manga. No no no animes don't have to really follow their respective mangas at all. All I'm saying is that the anime started too, and tried to go on it's own path which was terrible. I'm comparing the two slightly yes but no animes don't need to follow their mangas and no FMA didn't suck because it failed to follow the manga, it sucked because the storyline was crap. It looked like they decided to pay a bunch of homeless drunks for their imaginative and non-realistic thinking and called it FMA. I'll I'm saying that if they wanted to follow the manga like the anime had started out with, they should have waited till the manga finished. Point in fact is this anime just loses so much of its luster very early and well decides to go from an interesting possibly mind hurting anime to well some really ten to twelve year old predictable storyline that you can see a mile away and fails to keep your interest because they took your amazing story into a dark alley and went midnight urban dark alley on it.

Once again, your are not backing up your claims. Before, I thought you hated the anime because it didn't follow the manga. Now you say the anime sucks because the storyline was crap. What was so bad about the story and exactly how the hell was it predictable?
I mentioned above how the storyline was awesome because it had a deep, and elaborate plot with a great deal of twists and turns. A great deal of character development and a good balance of humor and sorrow. Elements you would pretty much find in any good anime (or literature for that matter).
Now, I would like to hear how the story sucked and how it was predictable. Back up your claims and I would respect your opinion. And just for you:FMA Wiki
The point I am trying to make is that for an anime that "sucked," it sure has achieved a great deal, don't you think?
If you choose not to respond, make sure the next time you are asked for an opinion, you don't make claims like "it sucks" and just say you don't like it. Because as I said before, the series does not suck and good luck trying to convince me otherwise.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a great Anime. I just recently finished the whole series and it was a great experience.
The only problem I had was the end, I know alot of people liked the end, but It didn't really set right with me. A great anime like FMA should have a happy ending. The movie was good too, but it basically had the same ending also.
At least the manga is still going, and in a differant direction too. I only hope that it has a better ending than the anime so my heart can be at ease.

Fullmetal Alchemist was a great series. It was one of the best anime series that I've seen and that I've watched completely. Though I have not read the manga, I'm sure that it's great as well. The entire story was great. It was funny at times, serious at times, and the fights that took place left me wondering what was going to happen next. There were also many things that you could think about while you watched it, for instance why did this happen, why did he die in a certain way, or why couldn't that person die, etc. At first I didn't think that I was going to like FMA, but I ended up watching the entire series(except for the movie. I haven't completely finished it yet) to see what would happen next. The anime itself had everything that I liked in it. Comedy, Action, Great Voice Acting, and a great Storyline. I'm also glad that it was picked by a good anime company. Many anime series have been ruined if they are not picked by the right company.(For example, One Piece and 4Kids. That didn't work out at all) But anyway, long story short, FMA was great and I just wish there was more of the series.
