Light - dead or reincarnated?

I want to open a discussion about Light. In the manga, at the end, it is made quite clear that Light dies and goes to MU (nothingness). But in the anime it doesn't say anything about MU, so we can presume that Light doesn't go there. Also, there are some suggestions in a special edition anime, Director's Cut, Ryuk is seen speaking with a shinigami (after the events from the anime), that is dressed exactly like Light when he was alive. Moreover, in the anime it is said that people who use the Death Note don't go in neither Heaven or Hell, but it doesn't say they go to MU either... so... my question is: Is Light a shinigami now or not? :)

Just because its not implicitly stated, it doesn't mean that its not possible that he found his way to MU / Limbo or whatever you wish to call the state of nothingness. That is to say its presumptuous to reach the conclusion that that's not where he ended up simply because it makes no mention of MU.

I'd be inclined to look at the anime as an adaptation of the manga. Some detail has been omitted by choice or by the editting process.

As much as it was left ambiguous in the anime, I would assume that they followed the manga in the whole Light going to 'Mu' thing.

Also, the shinigami that Ryuk was talking to in Re-light couldn't have been Light considering the fact that he did not recall any of the events that Ryuk was reminiscing about. That shinigami was simply a new character made for Re-light.

If this topic is going that far, we could consider that this Shinigami is Light, but it/he can't remember who he was while he was alive.

That would be how Shinigamis came to exist: They are peoble that used the Death Note and now pay for it. On the other hand, forgeting everything that happened in their lives would not be a real punishiment, would it?

I don't know really. Actually I'd rather not think so much about it. I like to believe that Light is dead and the story is finished.

I agree with you, that would be how shinigami appear. But I like to believe that Light is a shinigami. :P

In my opinion, Light must be dead because Ryuk had used his death note to end Light's life. Anyway, the aim of Ryuk is to watch the game between Light, L and N only, when Ryuk thinks it is so silly, he comes to end Light's life.

Hm... I understand your point of view, but in my opinion Light became a shinigami. In Re-light, when Ryuk tells the story of the anime, it reaches the point when Light defeated L. Then, the embarassing part would start, the battle between Light and Mello and Near, which Light lost. That's why, at that point, Light the shinigami stopped listening and went flying to the mortal world, suggesting that he was more interested in it than listening to an embarassing story about him. Another small evidence is the scarf around the shinigami's neck - it's exactly the tie Light was wearing when he died as a human.

i dont remember anything about mu in the manga, all i remember it saying was they can't go to heaven or hell. though i would assume he's become a shinigami. it's more interesting.

I was re-watching episode 4 the other day. If you pay attention to what is said you might be convinced with the theory of Light becoming a Shinigami.

Episode 4 is the one in which Light tell Ryuk that he would accept the "eyes deal"(I don't know how you call it in english) if it gave him wings to fly. Ryuk then tells that light was already a great shinigami.

Watch it again and think about it.

Yes, that's also a strong argument, I forgot to mention it. :P Good point, thanks for supporting me. ;)

You're welcome XD

One of the great pleasures of watching anime is to discuss it with someone else. Unfortunely it is quite rare nowadays. thanks to internet each person watches an anime alone whenever he/she wants to. That's great and all but it makes a discussion about the series less likely to happen.

Topics like this bring this possibility back, so I am the one to thank you.

I'm glad, I feel the same thing; I saw very few discussions about this on the internet. :P

Light is currently hiding in the same place as Lelouch. They are planning a crossover season together :)

Lol I couldn't agree more. I sustain similar theories about Lelouch's immortality. I think I'll make a thread about that too. :D So I get that you think that Lelouch is alive, happy with CC for eternity right? Cool! :D

Not only that. I'd love to see both masterminds working together in some kind of badass crossover anime. Perhaps in a plot to dethrone the Shinnigami Lord. I mean, If there was an Orphen-Slayers crossover (since they have very similar settings) why not a Code Geass-Death note crossover, they are not that dissimilar.

Interesting... it could be that the shinigami king seals the human memories of all shinigami when they were in the human world and thats why they can access the human world and are interested in it with similar habits as such (gambling?). I would say it could be a coincidence for Ryuk as he might know that the shinigami is Light or just suspicious.

Yes... :-? Maybe Light, now, as a shinigami, doesn't remember everything from his life as a human, but maybe something of the essence is still there; especially if it was a strong desire manifested in the real life (like purging the world of evil and becoming a god of the new world).
