Hi, I'm new to this forum.
I am an amateur artist interested in knowing how people make desktop wallpaper for anime.
What programs do professionals use to create such stunning images?
And, I can understand using programs to create the background/effects, but do they draw the images of the characters they use? (i.e. draw them, scan and then play around on a program)
See this link: http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/wallpapers/anime/eureka_seven
I've never seen the characters in those poses in the anime. So where do they get them from if they don't draw them? Plus, it is hard to believe people can draw such spot-on perfect images.

The artists here use a range of programs from ones like Photoshop, Illustrator to free programs such as Inkscape. Some of the wallers here are also painters, some are vectorers, and others extract images from scans to use in their walls.
The basis of any wall is the scene you want to portray, generally beginning with a character image you want to use whether it is a vector done by yourself or someone else, or an image cleanly extracted from a scan / picture. Once you have the main focus of the wall you then set about creating the background to suit. Yes, generally a background is vectored / painted from scratch, sometimes it will be an extension of a scan because the image is already so perfect for the scene.
The main thing is to not be defeated if your first results don't match up to your expectations, keep trying, it's how we learn and improve. Even the best of us started off as a learner =P
The stock images used are called vectors, they are images created in an art program based off of a scan / Picture. Generally these images are vectored so that there is a high quality copy of the image to use in walls as a lot of scans have a lower quality and wouldn't look as nice as an extraction.
The scans or Pictures here on AP are what vector artists use to create their vectored characters.
The scans are all from officially published artists who have drawn these images either for the Anime, the Manga or Video Games. So you may see many images that you haven't seen in the anime you are looking for, because they are promotional material or were drawn for the Manga etc...
But we do have some extremely talented artists here that create their own original anime art, so it isn't that hard to believe that people can draw at that level after all =)
Good luck in your walling efforts.

Thanks for the explanation Vampluva, ive been a member since 2007 and always intended to teach myself to wall, however time restraints and photoshops massive price tag always put me off. Thanks to you though ive looked into some of the free alternatives and they look like a great place to start. Maybe in summer when i finish uni il finally get around to learning the basics :). Sorry if this is a necro :o.

Glad to see a reply actually, it's always nice to get feedback when you try and offer helpful advice. If the pricetag of Photoshop is a barrier to you, you could always consider starting off with a torrented version, but honestly we have some amazing artists here who solely use Inkscape and their art is amazing. See @moutonzare as a perfect example. Good luck though and be patient with yourself, even our best artists will tell you that they are still learning with every piece that they do.
