After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Naruto Returns

"This vector is positively amazing; I always love a good monochromatic vector. The rain is realistic, amazing job on the bloodstains and water drops on his forehead protector, and good job making his hair detailed (excellent balance of detail and preservation of the original art style). Basically, everything is amazing except the eyes. I like how detailed, intense, and realistic they are, but... I don't like how they're both identical (would have had more personality if you did each one separately), nor the gaps between the iris' outlines and inner portion, and the ring inside the iris is kinda weird (it's almost as if each iris has an "inner iris" and "outer iris"). "Even after all these years, Kino no Tabi continues to be a major inspiration for walls.

Overall, this one is very nice, good use of color, excellent choice of cropping (I like this composition more than the original), clean, crisp lines, etc. My main critique is of the text. First, I think the choice of words is kinda... odd. It's like they want to be meaningful, but instead come off as vague and cliched. Also, since they don't overlap or fall behind the buildings at any point (and actually touch the building outline to the right), it flattens the wall greatly. I would take them out entirely, honestly, or make them bigger and have part of the buildings on each side overlap them (although I suppose you could alternately have the words in front of the buildings). Also relating to the text, I wish it were in a non-English language! I think French or Spanish or something would be a good choice, since either of those languages would match the architecture. Walls that have a non-English-speaking-country setting look weird with English text."

Feeling Blue?

"Nice color scheme, composition, mood (rainy, but not melancholy or dark). Personally like my anime characters fully clothed and not showing their underwear, but that's a separate issue. This is all nicely done, with good detail and a nice median between soft and sharp images, but whatever it is she's sitting on is by far the weakest part of the wall. Is it a staircase? A random curb in the sky? Besides being ambiguous as to what it is, it seems a little... off. Like, it doesn't have the detail and real-ness of the rest of the wall, and is a little fuzzy on the left side. Fix that up, and you'd have a nice (albeit moe) wall. Oh, and I might incorporate a little more pink into the background (just a tad, maybe in the clouds?) and a little more blue in the foreground scan (again, just a tad in a detail of her clothing somewhere), just to bring the two together a little more."

"I kinda liked how the other one was so very, very salmon colored, but I'll admit, this is less straining on the eyes. And I like the addition of the flower petals... adds depth and interest. Still not a fan of the text, though. Especially since the Japanese is a tad melancholy, and this wall is, well, not."

"While I like the overall composition and use of monochromatic color scheme, this wall (esp. the background) is a bit plain. It could use a TON more detail and visual interest. Also, that sickle-looking thing she has seems like there's something wrong with it (with all the sqiggles). And her legs just disappear!"

Slash your Soul

8 months 3 weeks ago

"The thing about using grass to help "crop" a scan is that it looks lazy (like, this isn't a full-body scan, so how do I compensate for the lack of anything below the torso? I know, I'll use a grass stamp!), especially when it comes up as high as it does in this wall here. However, I'll let this one slide since it blends stylistically with the rest of the wall, and I could actually see this character out in a field practicing sword swings or whatever. I might change the grass to a different variety though... this looks like your typical backyard-variety blue gramma... perhaps using a grass that's known to grow taller (e.g. wheat) it would look less like she's standing in tall grass and less like she's buried up to her waist with 1' grass around her.

However, excluding this grass species issue, the white grass is overall a nice choice (esp. how it's blurred to add depth), and the white butterflies (?)... they're visually interesting, but a little odd at the same time (in a "why is there a swarm of butterflies in the grass" type of way). I do like the white "swooshes" that come from the right, and the white firefly-like white orbs on the left. I'm not a big fan of the text... while I think something does belong there, "slash your soul" is weird. I would take the text out entirely, and the butterfly too (or replace it with a butterfly that looks more like it's actually flying rather than resting on some invisible object)."

"Nice composition, but this wall falls apart in the details. The background is crisp and a little too sharp, but the scans are blurry (which flattens the wall... monocular cues dictate that backgrounds are blurry and foregrounds are crisp and detailed). The Hikaru scan is particularly a mess... what happened to her outlines? I like the color scheme used here, but the green hearts clutter up the wall, and the flowers surrounding Hikaru Umi and Fuu are flat and make the wall seem even more 2-D."

"Fun scan, fun wall, nice color scheme.

I don't like the shadow on his face though; it makes me want to wipe my screen, but then I realize it's supposed to be there.

Also, the hi-res walls seem to be compressed more than they should have been (rather than being crisp, the wall has noticeable pixelation and other compression-related blemishes), which is sad, because such an otherwise clean and detail-filled wall deserves better than compression."

The World

"Grunge if ever I did see it. I don't know how I feel about the fact that half of the wall is very crisp, very sharp, while the other half is a bit blurred, softer. It's visually interesting, but also feels a little sloppy (like it was the unintentional result of resizing or lazy editing or something).

The concept is interesting; I assume the places are taken from the series? I would change the fonts; while the Japanese is okay (and that is exactly the font they use on modern maps), the English font looks too... colloquial or something, but I feel like it should be less Arial-like and more Times New Roman-like (or something equally more "traditional" and less "blocky").

Also, the text with "The Coliseum" -- コロシアム(前編) -- literally reads "Coroshiamu (first part)"
I presume this was taken from a 2-part episode or something; it kinda doesn't make sense here, though, since it suggests that there is a place called "Colosseum First Part" (versus the second part of aforementioned Colosseum).

I also feel like this wall needs more details in the backdrop, esp. more place names, but if these were taken from titles, I suppose there's a limit on that."

Hot like fire, cold like ice

"This is a snazzy vector. Not a ton of detail, but solid, with contours that vary in width and little-to-no pixelation or roughness. Syaoran's eyes, for some reason, look out of place, almost too cartoonish. Perhaps they needed more details, more fine lines (thinner lines would look less cartoonish), etc. to counter this. The fire is very nice; a good balance between artificial and realistic, and looks natural without contours even next to contoured Syaoran.

I like the background; it has an air of alchemy to it, which is not entirely out of place considering the random bits of fire that are magically suspended in air. I feel it could have had more colors, more details, a little more interest, though, and there are a few places where the black in Syaoran's clothes blend in too much with the background.

All-in-all, nicely done."

"Haha, this is great. Nothing too ambitious, but lots of interesting details, depth, good color scheme, etc. And the vector is very well done too. And L is just so adorable in that pose!

Anyway, a very "typical" wall in its concept and execution, but a well-done "typical.""

Though we fall to the ground, we rise like the SUN

"This is a cool wall and a great example of how much artistic license can be taken when vectoring a scan. While the colors are almost blindingly painful (not sure I could stand having this as a wall for too long...), I love this unusual monochromatic scheme.

One suggestion: while there's a lot of interest in the shadows (they can be large, small, detailed, etc.), the contour itself is fairly homogenous. As in, when we see the line by itself (e.g. her fingers, his/her hair), it has generally the same width and doesn't change in thickness. To add additional interest, I'd vary this line a lot; maybe making the area around knuckles or fingernails thicker, or making clumps of hair start out thicker and be thin by the end of the strand."

"I really like the design of this wall and think it matches Bokusatsu Tenshi very well. Besides having the basic aspects of a good wall, it's fun and has an interesting concept. There are a few little things that I'd suggest to make it better:

-more Japanese. I like how you have the title in there, but that's it. It would have been nice to have some more relevant Japanese floating around the page (esp. upper left-hand corner to balance out the title). Perhaps lyrics from the opening? I'm sure you could find those online somewhere (perhaps Lyricwiki?) Throwing in some romaji is interesting, but it doesn't stick out aesthetically as much as the kanji/kana do.

-improve the image. While the text looks fabulous, the image is blurry and the contour edges around it seem a bit narrow (like the image was over-erased). Possibly a lower resolution than 1600x1200 would look okay, but the high-res only emphasizes the softness of the image.

-reduce empty space by her left leg. While the rest of the page is fairly packed with text or image, there's an abnormally large amount of negative space at the bottom of the page. I'm not saying get rid of it entirely (it's needed to balance out the emptier space around her halo), but maybe reduce it somewhat."

"I'm going to assume this is a vector:

While I realize the lines of the original image weren't perfect, there are a few spots you probably should have changed in making your wall. First are Yuuko's eyes--they're wobbly (esp. under her left eye and her eyelashes). Another odd line is that of the bottom of the second "feather" of the fan (it looks accidentally thin). Also, I feel you could have upgraded the image by adding more detail, rather than slightly altering the smoke and extending the image horizontally a little.

While there is not anything particularly wrong with this wall, it doesn't have enough to it to be a good wall; as it stands, it's pretty average."

"Very nice. Lovely, soft, smooth scan extension. There's nothing particularly extraordinary about this wall, but it was done very well. I like the monochromatic (+tama-chan) scheme, and the backdrop is interesting enough that it could be petals, but abstract enough that your focus is on Naru instead. I don't quite get the whole "Happy Birthday" bit, though, especially since the Japanese has nothing to do with that (it's a little melancholy, actually)."

"Absolutely lovely example of vectoring, especially for greyscale vectors. The puffs at the bottom on her kimono look almost like smoke and add detail and interest. You really added a lot to the original! Although I'm not sure what's up with the clock-looking thing in her hair, it's well-drawn. While the ghosty subtle greys of her hair are lovely and soft, the dark branches and fabric steal attention away from her hair, so maybe having a few more dark shadows in her hair and lightening the branches would have helped that. But this is really fantastic; I still can't believe the level of detail you added! Nicely done ^_^"

Bright Night

"This wall definitely has very nice features: the characters are well-vectored, the sky is gorgeous in color and detail (the clouds are especially well-done), and the perspective is interesting. But the city scape feels like a total mess. While everything else has detail, texture, depth, and perspective, the buildings are flat, textureless, and cartoonish (rather than detailed and realistic with artistic flair like the sky). Also, why are some of the buildings on the right tilted, while none on the left are? I like the idea of having the buildings there, but they're by far the weakest part of the wall. One easy improvement would be to make the ones on the far right and far left of the wall stretched taller and made generally larger to continue the rounded fish-eye perspective of the sky and ground."

Two worlds as one

"Cute and colorful, a nice balance between detail and simplicity. However, considering that the theme is "balance," the wallpaper should be, well, balanced, but it feels heavier on the left-hand side, and the visual middle of the wall and the actual middle are different. While you could argue that the character on the right is intruding into the space of the character on the right, thus resulting in more of the wall being the blue character's, the straight, vertical line separating them, the spade-like object in the background, and the overall symmetry of the wall negates this. Also, this wall would have been a great candidate for a widescreen version. I think that would help greatly with the balance issue and make the wall feel less crowded."

Lady of the Wild Roses

"Absolutely lovely details, interesting textures, and a lively color palette that doesn't feel artificial. While the left-hand side was extended very smoothly, it lacks any of the visual interest and excitement of the right-hand side. The rosetree's bough is straight without and branches, and the bunches of roses are uniformly lined up without any empty patches or interesting protrusions into negative space. Her dress, which is very active in the right-hand side of the picture, just lies flat along the bottom on the left. While this is one of the best examples of the technical aspects of extending a narrow scan into a fullscreen wall, it lacks the artistic ambition and boldness of making this wallpaper take on a life of its own, rather than just being an extended version of the original."

"This is a fabulous example of taking advantage of the widescreen dimensions! Although most of the right side is sky, you can feel the same as the girl: staring off into the wide expanse of blue sky... speaking of which, the use of colors is fantastic! Very lovely!

As far as recommendations on how to improve it go... they're pretty small ones. For example, there were a few places where you can see evidence that the copy brush was used (like the blue "halo" on the right side of the right-most tower, and a few patches of clouds on the right half). And since the tower to the right is farther away, it should be smaller (and at a slightly different angle, but that would be asking way too much!) I also think the right-hand side of the balcony looks a little odd (it should have ended earlier than it does, or shrunk into the distance). However, these are little, nit-picky things. All-in-all, a very nice scan expansion wall! ^-^"

"I like this wall; it has a nice atmosphere to it, and although it has nothing to actually do with the YnM series, I think Hisoka was still a good candidate!

Anyway, there are a few things that could be better. Like, I like the style of the sky, and I like how crisp and clear the scan is, but the two look a little weird together. Oh, and I think the parts of his legs covered in water need to be bluer.

Overall though, very nice! ^-^"

"This wall is not really my style (I'm not a big fan of orange or brown, and although I like Loveless, I'm not crazy about those two particular scans). However, I feel like I need to comment on the Japanese. First, it's あいしてる "aishiteru" not あしてる "ashiteru." Second, you can't stick じゃない "janai" at the end to make it negative--"aishiteru" is a verb, and needs to be properly conjugated ("janai" is usually used with nouns, like これはペンじゃない "kore wa pen janai" or "this is not a pen"). Third, the word you're looking for is 好き(すき) "suki" not "aishiteru." "Aishiteru" is a word with very strong connotations, so for this context, the milder "suki" works much better. So, it should read: 「 好きじゃない」 or 「すきじゃない」 -- "suki janai" (since "suki" is not a verb, you can use "janai" with it). I don't mean to be harsh, but this is the English->Japanese equivalent of Engrish, which of course English speakers make fun of all the time. I hope this was helpful!"

"Wow, what a fun wall! Despite the technique (aka "throw together as many cool-looking brushes as possible for the background and stick a vector on top), this looks really nice! Lots of depth, detail, and visual interest without being too busy or visually overwhelming. The use of a monochromatic color scheme is the same--it should be boring, but it's so colorful instead! Actually, I think the weakest part of the wall is Haruhi's eyes, which in comparison to everything else look bland. Anyway, this is a great example of how to make an interesting widescreen wall, even when the scan only takes up about 1/3 of the screen."

"Oh man, this is a hilarious wall. I mean, a vector with symbolisim (the C2 thing)... Great! Anyway, nice, clean scan, and I like the textures used to spruce it up. I guess my only complaint is the picture itself. I mean, it looks great as a picture, but it's a bit on the OMGHUGE side when used as a wall. It kinda feels like I'm close enough to count the pores in his nose. ^^; When I first saw the wall, I thought it said "what mortality?" which I guess would have been equally appropriate, since he's now got a Light (from DeathNote)-like god complex and all... With good reason, of course.

Anyway, thanks for gracing us with a sweet Lulu wall!"

"Very, very nice vector, and good choice of scan (it really exemplifies the series well) and a wonderful use of the widescreen resolution. I also like the sky used--the clouds add interest, but they're wispy and not overpowering. Also, it's slightly odd, but I like how the clouds were incorporated into Cielo's wings. It helps unify background and foreground. Excellent job!

I don't see any difference between the "normal" and the "texture" versions, however."
