This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Portrait of a Monster

4 months 4 days ago

"The biggest resolution won't load for me so I can only look at the second biggest resolution 8P.

Aw, it is sad that there is only one comment because this is an interesting wallpaper. The title makes the wallpaper sad, which I like~ The textures really adds to the mood. I also like "pictures" inside wallpapers when they are done well, and I think this looks good! And nice job on redrawing Johan hehe, but it may be too symmetrical (but then again, I probably wouldn't have noticed if you didn't tell us that you reconstructed him xD). The upper part of this face on the right side is somewhat wobbly so it looks kind of messy. Overall, nicely done 8)!

It's probably because Monster is not too popular and Johan is, dare I say it, not a typical bishounen that this wallpaper didn't receive much attention. But I find that there are a lot less people who comment nowadays '_' (I'll be back to comment on your other walls when I get the chance)

I wonder who took this picture of him 8O"

"I love the colors and the simpleness in this wallpaper! I would prefer the turquoise colors be changed to warmer colors though. Oh, and congrats on your first vector! It's well done! At first I was going to suggest having outlines, but after reading your comment, I think the simpleness is good for this wallpaper! I also like the text in here. Fav!"

"Aw, haha, what a cute idea! The people are placed in the wallpaper like characters in games where you have to go up to each one and get information lol. Anywho, overall this is nicely done! The depth of the trees are a bit confusing though, because it's done in a flatter style than the painted parts. And I think the building is a bit too orangey/pinky. But I guess that's just a personal preference thing. I like otaku99's expression really much, haha.

We should have another contest together and submit it all together LOL."

"Lol you're right, he was meant for a surf board. I also like this one like the Fuu wallpaper! I like the splashes of stuff! But I think the blue and the teal/turquoise color in here doesn't match the greens and yellows and oranges. I think it's because those colors are cooler (as in cold lol)? And maybe vectoring the surfboard and making it stand out more would make it more... poppy? Hahah, can't think of words right now. Anywho, fav!

P.S. With both Jin and Fuu walled like this, you need to make a Mugen one too, lol!"

I really like the grey and the snow! The textures on the two Nanas make them look like they were cut out from a scene in a manga, don't know if that's a good or bad thing, haha. Anyway, this is such a nice Christmas wallpaper~ fav"

Attractive

5 months 1 week ago

"LOL, I LOVE how the "attractive" is coming out of her nose! I just wish there was more to this wallpaper to make it have more of an impact though. Eh, to rephrase that, I think that the way she's vectored (and maybe how her colors are light) doesn't add to her sneezing. All the lines are the same width, so it just looks like a traced image or enlarged screencap. I think the font for attractive is very suiting because it's fun and expressive. If she was outline similarly (of course, no that thick) with varying width in the lines, it would be more like ACHOO! Maybe I'm not making sense. Anyway, great idea for a wallpaper!"

These Shoes RULE!

"Yina's designs RULE! Haha, so pretty and cute! I really like her eye! And there this is totally not too much pink! Like Tsu said, it's for the design. If her hair was pink and the entire background was shades of pink, THAT would be too much pink. But all the colors here go nicely with each other. I would just suggest that the outline of her blouse be slightly darker so she stands out more. Ah, you make me even sadder since I keep failing at drawing.

Fav~ Lolol, there are no shoes here."

'Go; Leafe Knight of Fire'

5 months 1 week ago

"Alright! Finally here to comment! I've only skimmed the other comments, so I hope I don't repeat anything unnecessary.

First, this is why I think Go doesn't fit well with the background. The spiral in the wallpaper gives depth to the wallpaper, making a person think that they can kind of reach into the wallpaper. I think it's especially depthful because the main background is black, and so it looks like it's spiraling into an abyss. Go, however, looks really flat because he is outlined thickly and is colored in blocks (one color for entire face skin). Because of this, he kind of looks like a sticker that's been placed on a picture of an abyss.

Also, because Go is fairly small and not that simple looking, there needs to be something more to the background than the spiral. Generally, chibis drawn in this fashion have a cutely drawn background too, like in this wallpaper. Now you don't have to make some kind of scenery for him, but one idea might be to draw some sort of cute flame/fire design background on paper and scan it in for editing or vectoring. But there really does need to be something more flat behind him to match.

What you've added behind Go looks pretty interesting! But it looks like blots of paint to me, and that doesn't really match the rest of the wallpaper. On its own, it would look pretty cool though, hehe.

The flames coming out of Go's fist look too clean and somewhat too elegant to match him, because he has thick eyebrows and bushy hair (lol, cute). And I'd like to see more of his face since it has a big happy expression. The orange glow around his fist makes his arm look confusing, because of his unusual outfit. I need to see more of his sleeve to make out that the white thing around his fist is a sleeve, haha.

About the vector of Go itself, if all the lines could be as steady and clear as the lines defining his leg that is pointed down, he would be more pleasing to the eyes.

Lastly, green is a good color compliment for red, I think, so if you want to add more variety to the colors here, you could add yellow and green. It can be difficult to apply those colors nicely though.

Wow, I just realized that chibi wallpapers might be harder to make than regular ones! Sorry if I might not get the chance to come back and comment on this wallpaper, I have big assignments and exams now!"

~Sakura Paradise~

"HOLY COW!! I never thought that I would see a wallpaper made from that gorgeous picture! Very nice vectoring. It's great how Syaoran and Sakura look so much like the original! The background may be too blurry, though, so it doesn't really give the effect that they are surrounded by sakura trees/branches (maybe there is too much white in there). Vectoring traditionally colored pictures tends to have that problem. I also think that the flowers might look better if their outlines were thinner, which should give them more of a gentle and light look. Well, I immediately put this on my desktop, haha, fave!"

"The clouds look much much better now! And your idea of there having to be more is quite interesting and important, so make sure that it's written somewhere next time!

Now, I really suck at shadows, so I don't know if I can be much help. The most basic way of putting shadows is to define a point where the light is coming from. In your case, your sun would be off the wallpaper, so you can make a small version of your wallpaper and make the canvas bigger on the right side and draw where the sun is. After that, you will start to see where the shadows should be. You can even draw lines coming from the sun to help. It's been winter in my city for so long that I don't remember what a 8:00 autumn sun looks like, haha. But the shadows you have now look good to me.

I see that you added a texture over the sky. I don't think that's helping with the blending because the texture doesn't look painted. Hm, that gives me the idea of slightly smudging some colors and using that as a texture since the smudging will make it look somewhat painted.

When you change the color of the scan again, I think it would be nice if the light post closest to us remain pretty much the same color as it is now, since before the lighting sort of disappeared on it.

I think that's all for now. Oh, you're not being a bother at all, I would also like to see this in the gallery 8)"

"Very, very pretty! I really like the colors and the soft textures. About the background, maybe its color is too similar to the girl's skin color so her face doesn't stand out much. I almost thought she had no neck because I thought the dark part was the background, haha. Also, the shading around her left eye looks like a dark patch of skin to me... not that that's a bad thing to have... Oh, forgot to mention how lovely the vector is! Fave!"

"Oh, I know you use the mouse to do your work, so it might be hard to draw lines. Have you heard of a program called Paint.NET? It has a tool that allows you to make a line and change it to many kinds of curves (like the line tools in Microsoft Paint) and the program is free. That may help you with fixing any outlines. And I suddenly thought that it might look interesting if the houses were outlined too. But that sounds like a lot of work, so you don't have to do that."

"Hi Angel, sorry I didn't get to comment until now.

I think the red clouds make the sky look very hot. However, when I looked up pictures of sunset clouds, a lot of the pictures did have a lot of dark clouds, but the skies weren't as pink as in the wallpaper. And whenever they were fluffy clouds like yours, there were a lot of them. If you add more, that may help with making the sky look more full. Oh, but I think fluffy clouds, especially dark ones, symbolize some kind of omen or storm, so I would suggest you try out those really thin and long ones since they can be interpreted to be more flexible and adventurous. If you'd like to keep with the clouds you have now, you'll have to make it so that they aren't so red and turning so dark at the edges. Fluffy clouds have a lot of bumps that make shadows all over the place. I'll give you links to some fluffy clouds as well as the thin ones, and maybe you'll get something from there. Some of them are quite scary though.

Another thing is that the bridge is really blurry now, and I can barely make out the light post at the back. If you can outline (not too noticeable though) the bridge, that should help, and it might even make it match the way Sophie is drawn more.

So let's see how it goes from here."

"And yes, skies in real life are smooth. But buildings and poles are not blurry and blotchy in real life. Just to let you know, in art, people look for a connection in all the elements in a piece of art, and all the elements should serve to portray the central concept."

"The following applies to what you have replied for this wallpaper and your new wallpaper.

Perhaps I was not clear enough or maybe I seemed rude. If so, I apologize for that. I don’t know where you got the idea that you got on my nerves, but I must say that I am upset at how you snapped back at me for my good intentions. In fact, as I look back now, I begin to feel that a lot more than just my time has been taken for granted. You should have already guessed that my major recommendation is for unity in wallpapers, so you shouldn’t have asked for my opinion if your intent was to deliberately make the elements in the wallpaper clash.

And doing simpler things does not mean that you’re degrading yourself. Actually, that statement can be seen as an insult to other developing artists taking a different route to learn. I strongly believe that people have to learn the basics before they move on. People have to learn the alphabet before they can write. People have to learn how to draw a tree before they can draw a forest. Bluntly put, I don’t think you’ve grasped the concept of what good quality wallpapers looks like. You’re probably going to take that as an insult. Well it isn’t. I’m not here to try and hurt you. No one should be looking down on someone who’s just beginning. Not knowing is totally fine as long as the person has the determination to learn with an open mind.

Yes, you’re getting many suggestions for many parts of your wallpaper, but most of those suggestions don’t have enough detail for you to really learn. I don’t even think getting many suggestions is that helpful, because it’s harder to understand the reason behind them all. Conversely, if a person gets fewer, more detailed suggestions on particular parts on a piece of art, it would help to develop that certain part faster. Not to mention that it makes critiquing easier, at least for me. Moreover, I don’t really sense that you’re fully considering or thinking about the suggestions being made, mainly because I feel that you are throwing my suggestions out the window. I’m definitely not telling you to do what I say, but I’d at least like to see some acknowledgement of my points.

As for your thinking that your experience level shouldn’t matter in what you consider to look good, I disagree. The more you know about art, the more you know about what adds to a piece and what detracts from it. Nevertheless, even experienced artists make the wrong decisions sometimes. It goes to show that your strong feeling for something is not necessarily right. Like the text issue, you’ve been told at least twice as to why it’s not good where it is. That was coming from 2 reasonably experienced artists. Again, my point is not that you follow what we say. But you chose to disregard the two comments without fully considering the reason for them. It’s not good when you’re not open to challenges of your opinion, especially when you’re starting out. It makes me feel like I’m talking to a wall.

Lastly, why do you use such a strong term like “hate?” I don’t think people would have the energy to hate a wallpaper. And the “don’t bother” part… reading that definitely makes me want to not “bother” with your wallpapers anymore.

"Potentially, this is a very cute and colorful wallpaper, but as I always say, the background and the scan have to look like they came from the same source, or in other words, they have to looked unified. Having said that, the scan of the scouts look too drawn for the realness of your background, especially the flowers.

Also, technically, if the scouts were really standing in front of that sunset, they would look like... they were outlined in gold or something like that. But here, they have a black outline. Their faces might even be very dark.

The clouds look grainy and not as clean as the sky and grass. They also look to be behind the rays of light, and the rays of light are supposed to look like they are coming through the clouds.

There are a few blades of dark grass at the front that are quite clear. In reality, those blades of grass should be out of focus if the scouts are in focus and vice verse. So you might want to blur them.

This isn't that important, but I noticed that they are only slightly off center, and that kind of bugs me. I think that things should either be right in the middle or more noticeably off the the side. That's just a personal preference though.

Oh, and the title can come after you've finished the wallpaper if you don't already have an idea in mind of what you're going to do. But I think perhaps you are taking on projects that are too complicated for starters. You may want to start simple and learn from there!"

"Hello again,

I still think that the sky is too bright. What if it was desaturated it a little? Or you could add a golden colored layer on top of all the layers and use a filter (I don't know what it's called) to make the wallpaper seem more whole? Oh, and I don't know if you would be able to fix this, but the sky is really, really smooth and clear compared to the rest of the wallpaper, so you should try to make it look more like it's painted somehow. It's too bad that you're unwilling to use textures.

The clouds are really gray, and kind of look scary. I prefer the clouds that you had before.

Again, about the signature, with the way you designed it, it looks like it should be a significant part of the wallpaper, but it's kind of hidden in a corner. If it's not too significant, you should just get rid of it.

Good job for your perseverance in becoming an artist. I would just like you to keep in mind that until you are fairly experienced, you shouldn't brush away any suggestions just because you think the element in your wallpaper looks good."
