As an animation, Bakemonogatari has a simple, clean art style. But the guest illustrations for the series are anything but simple! So, it's great to see that °Tens took on a more complex illustration and made it his own with vector gradients so fine at points it more resembles painting that vectoring. you can try use stock photos, with modification...
and for me, i'll make the bg more 'unrealistic' by layering it with textures.
try google online to find some and play with the layering.
you can copy the texture to your file, resize it and play with the layer opacity for the effects.
plus, you can also use the filters found in photoshop to fix the bg.
u can use filter on both stock photos and textures, play with their layer opacity later after u've tried the different filter to c the effect.
btw, you can also use brushes to add more of the desire effect on the bg.
ok..now for the characters, you can play with the colour by filling it or brushing it in different layer, to make the layer and bg as a whole.
and about the effect of the 'power' thingy..u can try google for tutorials.
and maybe change the colour a bit because it just looks too dark.
anyway, just ask any wallers again if you need any help.
learning how to make a wall really takes time.

try see how the other wallers manipulate this type of design ( i can't say much because i'm not good in making this type of wall)

ok..the wall you made...im my opnion, i think you should not use stock photo as the background and you can try brushes or vector instead.
if you are still a beginner...you can go for cloud brushes.
just like the links clarings gave you.
ok...i think you can also remove the dinosaur...(is it there...the small animal thing?) because i think that it is not suitable to be in that wall.
think you can improve on extracting again.
anyway, you can explore and develop your own way instead of sticking on tutorials...XD

first of all, the vectoring, i noticed that sone of the lines are a bit shaky on the character. plus, you can make the shadow of plue bigger..try to experiment for the best effect for the shadow.
another thing is...i like the combination of the colour for the bg...good combination of the overal theme.
for plue, you can try brighten the colour a bit so that it matches the bg.

i think overall this wall is beautiful but you have to try modify some of the parts, such as the sun ray...it is a bit blurish and i think it has something to do with the colour. you can try to observe other walls with sun light effect and try to balance out the colour. plus, you can try put a darker colour on the character, it seems to bright. try to playh with the shades of the 'sun light' effect to see which works best.
the rest...everything there seems ok to me...XD
