Trick or Treat by °chanelqueen17 1 month 2 weeks ago

^nat
After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

"This is awesome Beckor, I really like it!
My only complaint is that it looks too red/magenta-ish and a tad too dark on my CRT monitor - not sure if it's to do with my monitor or what. I reckon sunset yellow/orange with plenty of light highlighting all the little details of the rubbles could work wonders for added dramatic fx.
Great job! ^^"

"Love the use of ripped newspaper idea for a border - but I find the centerpiece slightly messy for my cuppa tea.
Congrats for the win!"

"What an effective way to use a border!
Love how it actually helps to maintain focus with such a busy background.
The background is great but a little too busy for my cuppa tea.
Nice colours too, not retro enough for me but still, a bright happy-go-lucky mix of colours works nicely for this one.
Congrats for the win!"

"I agree with the comment about it being too dark. It might look ok on my LCD at home but on CRT, mate - can't see jack! Which is unfortunate, as minstrelknight said after all that effort poured into creating such meticulous work, why hide it?! :)
Do let me know if you decide to make it lighter.
Congrats - you're great at creating these 3D scenes.

Btw, was this really vectored from scratch?! Painting is done in photoshop yeah?
It almost looks like done in a 3D package .. "

"This is your first wall??! Wow wouldn't have thought that ..
Unusual resolution/aspect ratio - it would get stretched in most monitors (majority 4:3, 5:4 or widescreens).

I actually thought the composition is quite interesting - liked the way you have the 'road' bars and the halo circles, but I think you could improve much more by adding details and more elements.

When you have 'road' lines like that, you are essentially directing your audience's eyes to follow along the lines until it hits an object e.g. cityscape like you had before - which makes a great attention getter. Plus the halo circles really help to direct focus to whatever is enclosed in it. However, now you've taken the city silhouette away, it seems like it's missing a central element - after all that attention directing efforts. If you know what I mean. So I reckon you're better off having another central piece there where the buildings used to be.

I don't know what the black things on the ground are .. ??
Love the text work - nicely done.
Also lookup a design rule-of-thumb called rule of thirds - check it out on google or wikipedia, it's good stuff.

And you shouldn't really be commenting on your own wall because comments count towards your rating score, and the mods here might think that you're doing that to boost your own rating which could result in a fine or ban (mods here can be quite scary >_<). If you want feedback, you should go to the Session Zero in the Forums.

Great job for first wall, you're off to a flying start, keep it up!
I don't hand around Session Zero much anymore, but you're welcome to PM me anytime, I check AP regularly.
Good luck!"

Love the painted look as well. Wished there were more detailed elements for the left half but still nicely done all around - great wall!"

"Great job with making a parody version of the original design which fits perfectly with the challenge, I give you that - but I don't find anything particularly special about the concept or quality to be honest...
Oh well don't mind me, I'm just another dumb ignoramus with cheap tastebuds =/"

"LOL - awesome concept putting the title in his mouth!
Is he biting/crunching the title or is it a gag tape sorta thing? Can't quite tell ..
Anyways, absolutely love the idea - although I thought the execution is a bit rough especially with the hair. The colours kinda looks like psychadelic/retro type to me, which works well together but just a tad too bold for my cuppa.
Great wall!"

"Think you already know how I feel about this wall, but I'll say it again anyways.
Great concept, very unique and original. Actually, now that I think about it, it reminds me of Dali for some reason .. humm .. Maybe you share his creativity (and insanity) lolz! In a good way :)
Love the blending and texture work - you're the queen!
Nice arteries idea for the background too.
Congrats matey, excellent job!"

Great job - congrats to us! *cheers!* :)
And hurrah for the tiebreaker battleships!"

"This is my fav wall out of your battle results.
The sketchiness is absolutely amazing and even more amazing that you are able to carry the same drawing style across the board, creating a seamless blending of original and extension halves.

I wished though, perhaps if the lighting was a tiny bit less uniform, perhaps introduce a dim light bulb or a lantern somewhere, I reckon that would make an absolute killer for added dramatic fx which would help direct focus on certain parts of the wall e.g. the person and/or the cityscape.

Another thing that I wasn't 100% on was the windows - not sure if it's slightly lacking depth or just an optical illusion, but the windows look like posters pasted on the wall rather than actual windows. Maybe I just need a new pair of glasses.

Congrats for the win and for such an awesome wall!"

"God, change the text pleease!
Love everything you've done - great composition, lovely vectoring (esp for range murata's work), nice background, everything looks so awesome - but the text!! Placement is good but the title itself is really not my cuppa - sorry.

And if it wasn't a black and white challenge I think this one could do with nice happy colours.
Excellent job - good to know that someone your calibre still keen to learn more and not afraid to step out of familiar territory. Too bad your army lost but seeing the results I reckon everyone is a winner.
Good luck with the Foundation battle!"

Leaving the city

3 years 3 months ago

"Absolutely adore the concept of having the girl leave the city through a door like that - love the originality!
But I agree with most of Kalico's comments - not keen on the grains texture, prefer more details for the buildings, the bottom bushes/trees(?) look a bit too photoshopped wouldn't mind more details there as well. And just like everything else, the door frame isn't as good as it could be - maybe if you weren't as rushed.

I really really wish you had fixed it up more before you submitted it because it would've gone straight into my fav book - but still, nice job!
PS. do let me know if you end up fixing it."

"I love your concept but somehow it really really begs for colour to me.
You know, a nice bright summer day with a light breeze - a perfect day for a spin - kinda feeling ..
Would ruin your original oldschool grunge concept, but that's just me.
Didn't mind the grass so much but not that keen on the vertical textures looks too uniform - maybe a mix of different textures would've worked wonders.
Still, great wall - too bad you guys didn't win."

"Man, this challenge really brought the best of everybody's creative juice in black and white!
Absolutely love the dark/angsty/eerie feel of the wall.
I like the subtle background elements - and they were all made from scratch? wow ..
A tad too much glow on the text for my cuppa - but it's not that much of a big deal.
Great wall - congrats!"

"Lovely composition, colours and background design.
Great scan choice but something about it that makes me think it could be blended better with the background - can't put my finger on it .. Could be to do with sharpness/colour balance contrast between foreground and background elements - not sure ..
Still, awesome wall - looking forward to your next one!"

Welcome to the Monochrome!

3 years 3 months ago

"Pretty neat wallpaper and as usual, nicely done complex vectoring which seems to be your signature style. The background idea is nice, looks like a mic or insect eyes pattern.
And 300 hundred circles? damn .. I hope you used shape blending and didn't create each of them individually ...

Reminds me a little of EdiBomb's Monochromatic Sound esp for the 'monochromatic'-ness and the background circlets - but I know you and trust you're not a ripping type, so it's prolly just purely coincidental design similarities.

Nice work! ^^
PS. just bought a walling rocket shoes eh? :)"

I wonder how this would look in full colours - somehow something about this piece screams white and pink to me ..

Still, great job congrats!
And it's the first gakuen heaven wall if I'm not wrong?
well then, doubly congrats, looking forward for more! :)"

"Done in 2 hours?!?! Bloody hell, you must really be on steroids ..
Interesting manga-look concept but personally I would prefer just the main dude's block alone as the whole wall.
Excellent vectoring and good use of live trace *cough* cheating technique - someone's gotta use that feature! XD
Great job!"
