After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Dear god

Just few hours ago you called me "boy", now you're calling me "god". I must say, that's an interesting development :-)

^hatesyou
Physical objects wear through use.

I think I need your definition of "use".

^hatesyou
Cars, homes, computer components and organs included. If they are idle, the rate of this wear is slowed.

How often do you change electrical wires in your home? I would also like to know what happens to them when you use them, do they sublimate or do the change into to same nonconductig material?

^hatesyou
There is an acknowledged pest.

How do you know that it's not just winsched.exe?

^hatesyou
It causes the browser to redirect to a specific website.

winsched.exe can do this.

"I just realized that I wrote some things that may have multiple meanings and I was not aware of it at the time of writing, so if I by any chance have offended someone I would like to apologize because it was not my intention.

^hatesyou
Just how do you think polarity is altered?

By changing the orientation of spins of electrons. See Electron magnetic dipole moment.

^hatesyou
It's a realignment of the surface layer via magnetism... ie a mechanical change is made to the surface.

I'm sorry but this is quantum mechanics and you cant apply classical mechanics here.

^hatesyou
I'd also appreciate it if you realised your point is moot. Organs wear just like everything else.

Yes, but I'm quite sure that speech is not the cause. Same as writing is not cause of disk failures.

^hatesyou
Note I said recover. It's not going to recover if it hasn't been touched in the first place. Besides its a browser hijack and not a boot virus.

I'm sorry I was little off-topic here, I absolutely agree with you that once you touch it it's gone forever, I just wanted to point out that format is not the ultimate tool for this task.

^hatesyou
The user still needs to either format his drive or take the time to kill the pest.

1) It's quite possible that there never was any pest. Just think about it. The best way how to avoid detection by anti-virus is not to behave like a virus, just place one file into startup folder and hope that nobody will notice.
2) when we are unable to see the pest isn't it good idea to cure the symptoms see what happens and then decide if it's necessary to destroy everything?

~ambstrike
i don't think there's 1 specific program to easily kill it so i might have to format my drive

Don't give up so easily, those windows utilities are generally very user friendly.

Parts wear with use.

Mechanical parts wear with use. Whats so mechanical about changing polarity? It's true that you HDD is spinning when writing and that spinning is damaging it but it's also spinning when reading or when doing nothing.

^hatesyou
Needlessly rewriting data to obscure the file allocation table and any sector data is use. A HDD will die with a lot of writing.

Do you talk a lot? because when you needlessly talk you are using your brain and in the end you will die, I know that it's not fair but it's true, the number of words we can say is limited same as number of bits that can be written to your disk. :-(

~ambstrike
I agree, Ahaha~ I should have been more paranoid

Paranoia can help sometimes, but in my opinion wisdom is much better. It's important to think before you open that strange hyperlink you've got in that email.

^hatesyou
There is no virus that will recover from a formatted drive.

Actually there is. If your virus is in the boot record than format won't help you."

^hatesyou
Because there's little point in doing such things by halves. If you want it dead make sure its dead. Don't just take shortcuts to hide the symptoms.

So tho correct procedure is to first destroy the virus with some sophisticated tool and than remove winsched.exe by pressing key with label "Del".
But we are unable to find the virus which may mean that the beast is hiding really well or it's just not the anymore and I thing the best way how to determine which of those two options is true is to delete winsched.exe and see if it reappears again.

^hatesyou
And now your HDD's have a shortened lifespan in the name of paranoia... not quite what I'd call wonderful.

I'm not sure if shred can actually harm your HDD, it can do a lot of damage to flash memory but normal HDD won't die from lot of writing (I use the same swap partition for more than two years now and it's still fine). But the truth is that simple dd is more than you'll ever need unless your enemy is NSA or Mossad (see "The Great Zero Challenge" for more information)."

"You are right as always, but I would guess that this trojan can be taken care of by any anti-virus and it may even have been already removed. But winsched.exe will most likely not be recognized s a virus, because it doesn't behave like a virus. Sure, it may not work but you will have to remove it anyway then why not to do it now?"

"I must say that your solution looks very complicated but unfortunately t will not help :-( . But "The Big Wheel" told me that only working solution for this problem is to delete all files named "winsched.exe" from your system and especially from folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup""

"I've just visited www.lookanddiscover.com and it looks like spammer, nothing dangerous here (except possibly that flash logo which I can't see becase I have no flash), if it is really a virus, you probably got it from some spam, but it's possible that it's isolated in your browser and rest of your system is safe. I suggest to reinstall your browser, delete your default profile, or try to create new windows user, but if your current user account has administrator rights than you should really listen to ^hatesyou because she has lot of experience with this ;-)"

There's so much free software available for Windows that I don't feel like I ever have to buy software if I don't want it.

Yes, but have you ever tried LaTeX under windows? It's also problem to find good window manager or shell (I hate explorer) and worst of all is their package-manager.

205ora05
And also how to make a superuser account

You already have two of them, you don't need another one. ;-)

You set root password during installation and if you don't remember it you can change it prim single user mode.

In FreeBSD there is second "root account" named "toor", it has no password so you must set one if you want to use it. It's recommended to do so, because in FreeBSD the default shell is csh (/bin/csh) but most people prefer bash which is in '/usr/bin/bash' that means it's on different slice than '/', so if you set bash as roots shell and something goes wrong, you are kaput. But if you set bash as toors shell and something goes wrong, you still have root with csh."

I always found it easier to install a linux into a smaller partition and try it out with that way.

Same for me, but problem is that most BFU don't know how to boot from CD-ROM and they also have this strange believe that all software must be installed by running some .exe file.

honorshark
Well, those people who installs that way, dont really want to delete Win I think.

They probably don't know it's possible to delete them. :-)

honorshark
Hmm it won't be that hard to write one.

But it would be hard to find some user for it. I mean, .exe installer for Ubuntu is great idea, because Ubuntu is linux for users, but when you have somebody who is afraid to use fdisk it's not good idea to give him Gentoo or Debian."

But you won't find out all the "under-the-hood" advantages like the ext3 swiftness, and things like that.

Root file-system IS ext3, only difference from normal Ubuntu installation is that / is mounted over loopback and it uses GRUB 2. The real disadvantage is that you cant delete windows partition once you install it.

honorshark
By the way there is a .exe installer for Debian:

That's what I always wanted, the only thing I need now is .exe installer for Gentoo :->"

I would say that you need to reconfgure your BIOS and set it to not to search for hard drive and boot from CD-ROM."

chibimisao
So is it ok if i just added a 1GB stick to it? Or is it better to buy two 512mb sticks?

I think that best is to buy two 1GB modules :-) , it's sort of "final" upgrade so you won't need to by more RAM next year. ;-)

chibimisao
1. Is the brand important? If im using two ram sticks, must they be of the same brand?

No, brand is not so important but make sure that the new RAM has same frequency and latency as the old one.

chibimisao
2. What brands do you recommend?

Kingston or Corsair, but if you don't want to over clock it, then almost anything is OK.

hatesyou
Two 512 DIMMs preferably from the same batch and maufacturer will outperform a single DIMM of RAM due to the effect of Dual Channelling.

Yes, by 0.1 % . :-> But the truth is, it's certainly not slower, so if the price is similar it's better to buy two modules rather than one.

chibimisao
And if i did go ahead and just added on a 1GB stick in the 2nd slot along with my current 256mb ram, would any problem occur?

Who knows? It may work OK, but it may also do something very "funny", like restart you PC every five minutes. It's better not to combine two different modules even if they have same parameters because even different number of memory chips can cause a big troble.

chibimisao
If possible i don't wanna remove my current ram because it kinda feels like it's a waste to just leave it out and collect dust. .__.

It feels like waste of space to leave it in, because you can have another 1GB module there."

Laptop Battery Life

DeepDragoon
I was under the impression that Lithium batteries internal resistance increases due to oxidation which is accelerated if stored in a hot place at a high charge level.

That is correct.

DeepDragoon
Which means that although it still contains a full charge it cannot deliver it all.

That is half correct. It can deliver it all but not as fast as you would like to. So if you play Doom it can give you, lets say 20% because you're draining power too fast, but if you are taking it slowly enaugh, like when you do
echo "mem" > /sys/power/state :-) , it can still give you 90%."

I've always thought Hibernate was called the same thing in both Windows and Linux

OK, my mistake.

~DeepDragoon
Although lithium batteries don't suffer from memory problems, the estimated charge level can become inaccurate so it is worth depleting and recharging your lithium batteries occasionally.

But I guess this is just software problem, right?

~DeepDragoon
Lithium batteries loose their capacity if they are kept at a high charge level and in a hot environment, so being in a hot laptop while fully charged will shorten the life of the battery.

Lithium batteries don't loose capacity, they're aging. Its true that they're aging faster when kept in hot places but I guess this should not be problem unless you have poorly constructed laptop with battery placed near the CPU."

And I think ~0x7c2 means standby not hibernation.

It's called suspend2ram in Linux, I don't know how they call it in windows but it's that state when only you RAM id powered and rest of your laptop is turned off.

evilmaniac
If you claim you have not used the battery for a long period of time, try depleting (down to 1~3% power) it several times, and fully recharging it, it might help.

Lithium batteries don't have memory effect, so this will most likely not help. :-(

evilmaniac
it usually is recommended you leave the battery out when using the AC adapater to power the laptop (but I dont do that anyway).

Only if you have some kind of strange or stupid laptop, I think that it's not recommended to recharge your battery when it's 95% charged but almost all laptops can prevent this and there are also laptops with not-removable battery so I think this is just a myth (please correct me if I'm wrong) "

"It is absolutely normal for battery to dye after two years and it doesn't matter if you were using it or not. Don't you use Microsoft?

"I guess it's time to join this discussion, so here is my list:

systems I don't use:
Windows
I don't think this is operating system any more.

MacOS
It's too much user friendly for me :-)

systems I use:
FreeBSD
This is my favorite OS, I like it because I think it's beautiful, well I can't really tell why but I just like it :-) unfortunately id don't have drivers for all of my hardware so I use Linux more often.

GNU/Linux
This is my main OS, it's not as beautiful as FreeBSD but it has more drivers than any other OS here. My favorite distributions are Gentoo an *Ubuntu but neither is perfect for me.

Solaris
I don't have root account on any solaris system and that solaris server I use is either poorly configured or just naturally slow. So I don't like this one too much.

systems I play with:
Minix3
I heard this one can run well on old hardware, so I installed it on my Pentium 100Mhz , it can boot under 5 second (from bootloader to prompt)

MenuetOS
this one it written in assembly language only, how else would you fit OS with GUI, Email/ftp/http/chess clients and ftp/mp3/http servers to single floppy

ReactOS
There is still hope for win32 platform :-)

Plan9
best OS if you want to write scientific article :-)

You think Adobe or Nero isn't paying to have their product bundled with all those?

Actually I think that CD-writer manufactures are paying to have nero bundled with their product, because CD-writer without proper software is just as useless as a modem without browser. And you know that nero is not for free.

SkullOne
The money spent on lawyers and the suit would have been better off marketing their product through other means.

Do you have any data which support this theory or is it just a speculation, I think it's still to early to say this.

SkullOne
I know plenty about Linux and use it every day thank you very much.

Sorry, it seems that you are using different distros than I do, because when I last checked there was no Opera in Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian or Arch install CD (you can install it later but I don't think it's there by default)

SkullOne
Linux distro could just as easily bundle Opera instead of Firefox without breaking any EULA's because Opera is free. Of course Opera would probably have to pony up some money to do it...

It seem that you don't know too much about Linux. ^_^
Or may be you just didn't read that license, if you have opera installed on Linux it should this file: "/opt/opera/share/doc/opera/LICENSE" unless you have it installed somewhere else.

SkullOne
thus EDUCATING the public as I've been saying.

People don't want education, they want a browser and they want it NOW.

SkullOne
1. weak excuse. bottom line is OS X has Safari bundled with it. Anything else has to be separately downloaded which is a reason why Opera is suing MS.

Does it mean that opera must sue creators of Lynx because it's bundled with Gentoo install CD and it doesn't pass acid2 test?

SkullOne
2. Non-issue because I never mentioned Web standards for Safari. this was simply about Safari being bundled with OS X.

Calm down, I'm not talking about you I'm talking about opera and they clearly said something about web standards.

SkullOne
3. IE while integrated with the kernel is not necessary for the OS to run as proven with 98lite and XPlite.

But it's still illegal to remove it"

You have an option to disabled google tracking before the installation. Then you can try Firefox "Tempered Data" plugins to verify any packet send to google.

If you already have Firefox you can just replace Google tool-bar with other plugins, because there is plugin for everything wat google toolbar can do."

Adding CDs would boost cost on multiple fronts. You would think it would be minor but in the eyes of the vendor it isn't because they have to do it in such bulk and in which case they would stick it to the customer. No thanks. I'll stick with free download.

When I buy a new mother-board there is always CD with drivers and manuals and Adobe Acrobat. When I buy a new monitor there is always CD with drivers and manuals and Adobe Acrobat. When I buy a new CD-writer there is always CD with drivers, manuals. Nero Express and Adobe Acrobat (even OEM versions have those CDs). There is a CD for every piece of hardware in my PC. I think it should not be impossible to add some web browsers to some of them (at least to that CD I got with my network card)

SkullOne
They will always go back to IE because it is what they know.

Yes it's true that Opera need to let people know that that there is browser named opera but every advertisement is quite inefficient as log as there is IE in windows and by the way, to sue microsoft is not such a bad advertisement, if find on the front page of their newspapers that some company sued microsoft, some of them might want to try their product and this is the kind of event that can make it to the front page because everything that has something to do with microsoft or Bill Gates will sooner or later make it to the front page of some tabloid.

SkullOne
Oh and if Opera wants IE out of Windows because it's "unfair" why aren't they suing pretty much every

It seem that you don't know too much about Linux.
Opera is NOT included in majority of Linux distributions because it IS NOT open source

SkullOne
and why aren't they suing Apple for bundling Safari?

1) Safari is minor browser so it's not so interesting
2) Safari is first browser who passed acid2 so it would be hard to sue them and then say "we are doing this for community"
3) Safari isn't integrated in the kernel of OS X

ChaosKaizer
There is "ODT" format for all type of XML (open-xml), microsoft version of open-xml is more towards microsoft-office-xml.

Actually .odt can only replace .docx ^_~, but the main problem with ODF is that it lacks some abilities which Microsoft desperately needs, for example backward compatibility with "Microsoft Office 97" file format.
