Original Art - Descend from the Heavens

"It's been a very long while since I uploaded some original art here... But I'm really proud of this piece so I wanted to share it and get some feedback!

This piece I sketched two years ago and only felt my colouring skills were good enough to complete it recently. It took me around 40 hours to colour and sketch and was on around 30 layers in Photoshop.

You can see the piece here.

Her name is Thagya and she was inspired by a number of different things. The main ones were:

* A statue of the Buddhist Diety Thagya I saw in a museum.
* Valkyries
* Soul Calibur

I would love to here any comments or constructive Criticism anyone might have. Most of all though I hope everyone enjoys this piece :D"

"I agree with everything said above. The most important thing more than anything else though is that it is an actual wallpaper size. I've never seen one that is 1023x739 so forgive me if this is actually a screen resolution. Preferably the bigger you can make it the better. This is a list of resolutions taken from animepaper's faq:

- 1024x768
- 1152x864
- 1280x960
- 1280x1024
- 1600x1200
- 2048x1536

Wide screen:

WXGA - 1280x800
WXGA - 1440x900
WSXGA+ - 1680x1050
WUXGA - 1920x1200
WQXGA - 2560x1600

Also like previously said this really feels like a coloured manga panel. You should maybe focus on one side or the other. The image of Soul playing Piano is really nice and could be incorporated into a really good looking wallpaper. I could see it being really nice and grungy and dark to suit the mood of the image. If you were going to do something like that though you may have issues with the quality of the image. It's a good start but you definitely need to work on it a lot more before it's ready to post up. I love Soul Eater though so any addition to the gallery would be a welcome one. Good luck :)"

"It's looking good. I have to agree with ~DDV though the secondary image in the background isn't needed at all. In fact it's something that AP actually advises against in the faq. I also think that the II could actually be removed and it would make the wallpaper look a lot better. It would take a little work but it would be worth it. Definitely try and paint it out if you can. Everything else though is fine. I like the typography around the edge, it looks really good.

So yeah clean up those two things and I think you are on to a winner! Good luck±"

Fate/Stay Night Wall - I'm stuck..

"I think the version that looks the best is the 3rd, it feels more complete and I love the little touch of the wonky picture on the wall. I also think that the wallpaper doesn't distract so much from the characters as in the second one. That floral pattern is just a tad too much.

I think Dias has pretty much said everything that you need to change on this wallpaper though.

Shadows will definitely help this wallpaper feel more complete. When you add them try to keep in mind where the light source is on the characters, and use that as a guide to put them in.

You've made a really good start though and once you've made the few tweaks suggested I think you'll have a really nice solid walls. Fantastic work so far, and good luck with the changes :D

my first wallpaper

"~DDV is right, you've made a really good start and the idea is there but you need to do some work on this yet to get it up to scratch.

Maybe you should look into giving this wallpaper more depth, I think that would be a good place to start. I personally would go for some shading on the stripes/ribbons behind her. Make it look like they are over lapping each other and make it look like her shadow is falling on the ribbons behind her too. Make sure you have a clear idea of where the light source is falling on the character (I would probably say it's coming from the top right of the character as the left side of her face is in shadow) before you start adding the shadows in. Oh and also remember to add some highlights in too, especially on the ribbons in front of her. Try to make them as soft as you can to reflect the style that the character is drawn in.

I would also think about adding some shadows to that plain background and maybe some textures to give it some more interest. A gradient in the direction of the light source will help give some interest straight away.

It's a really good start though but definitely needs some more work before you submit. I hope I've helped give you some inspiration ^_^

@ ~DDV: I'm not sure why it does that... To be honest though I've not been on AP recently so I wouldn't have noticed anyway O_o;; Maybe you should ask in the suggestions and help area so a member of staff can answer or even look into it?"

Kan'u Unchou Scan to Vector-Wall

I have to agree with everyone else though I think it needs a tad more work. At the moment it's so plain that it may not be accepted. Seeing as it looks like the girl is laying on a bed sheet it might be quite nice to continue the bedroom theme and draw in some more of the bed... Or maybe even a wall or rest of the bedroom in. If you go for the wall idea maybe stick a window in there with some pretty flowy curtains, although you might have to be careful with light sources if you go for an idea like that.

This really does have a lot of potential to be a beautiful wallpaper, just a little more work on the background is all it needs. I'm sure you can do it though, with the way you did the vector so well so far you'll have no problem ^_^"

"I can't remember the last time I posted my art work up on AP so I thought I would share some of my latest anime inspired pieces. Please feel free to comment or crit them, in fact constructive criticism is more than welcome!


This is my original character Rayner Mezame, it's a design I'm going to paint onto a door in the staff room where I work (I've been commissioned to decorate out there by my manager).


This is Rayner Mezame again but with some lame looking Cherry Blossom's in the background. If anyone has any advice on drawing Cherry Blossom's then please do feel free to give me so advice!


A random Elf woman with a canyon background. The background took me forever as I had never really painted anything like that before. I'm not fond of the pencil lineart... maybe one day I'll go over it in photoshop!


Some lineart for a character that was inspired by a Lampade nymph, which is basically a nymph of the underworld. I thought I would upload the pencil sketch and the digital line art next to each other just so you can see how I start my drawings.

I hope everyone enjoys them and like I said before feel free to give me some comments or advice.

You did an awesome job with the photoshop colouring. The best thing to do I think is either go on mangarevolution.com and look for some tutorials on digital colouring or go to deviantart.com and look there in the resources section. I've been colouring in photoshop for years now and I still need to look at tutorials so don't be afraid to go check them out. My only advice for now is when you colour, if you keep the colour on a separate layer to the line art you can then put the layer blend on multiply and it'll mean you don't cover up the line art.

She's so adorable though, keep up the hard work x"

Fujisan - Original wall

"I've been working on this wall for a very long time. It's one I kept stopping and coming back to. I've got to a stage now where I don't know what to do.

This is an original piece by me. The lady was originally drawn for a birthday card my mum was making for my cousins. I liked the sketch and had idea's for backgrounds and stuff. So I traced in illustrator and then added the background stuff.

I've got to the stage now where I don't know if it's finished or if it's missing something. So I need your help! Please tell me what you think I could do to improve. Also I realise her arms are way too long, I was trying to edit them but I failed so I decided to leave them as they are. The blurryness on the background is actually at different variations and is there to achieve more of a feeling of depth.

I was thinking maybe some birds but I don't know if they will just look too rubbish



So yeah any comments you can give will be greatly appreciated."

"Good start, it's very cute.

I think it still needs some work. The left side of the wallpaper, even with the logo, is very empty. Maybe you could add some more splashes in the bottom left corner to make it look more like they are splashing in the water.

If you did do that then I think you could remove the logo. I don't think it fits with the wallpaper and I don't think you really need it to be there. If you did still want to keep the text on the wallpaper then I think you could do something that is more fitting.

I think with those changes you will have a very pretty looking wallpaper. Keep up the hard work."

"This wallpaper is a good start but I don't think it's ready to be submitted.

The extraction is excellent there's just one flaw that I can see, and seeing as you did the rest so well it shouldn't be a problem. I've circled it in blue for you, so you don't have to read a long winded exlpanation of where it is!



The background the main issue for me. I don't think it really goes with the character (apart from maybe her hair) and it's also too bright. So maybe changing the colour would make it seem to fit better.

I also don't like the texture on the lighter section of the wallpaper. It really breaks the wallpaper into sections which means it makes it difficult to view. Maybe making it softer will help. It wouldn't hurt to experiment with a slight blur over the top just to see what it looks like.

The other lighter bit with the "dissolved" dots on really looks like a poor photoshop filter, which I'm not sure AP would acecpt. I'm sure you could come up with something nicer than that.

Try experimenting with textures on layer blends over the whole background or even something with a more complicated pattern on it, like swirls or something that reflects the characters personality.

I like the quote, mainly because I also like Coldplay. I think the fonts need some work as does the placing. The strokes around "knobody knows" make it stand out too much compared to "where do we go?". You should try to balance them so they are more evenly balanced.

The only other idea I have for the background would be extremely hard to do. I think a road going off into the background which would also reflect the quote really well. The only problem I see with this is painting it and getting the perspective right would take A LOT of hard work,

Out of the two newest versions, I prefer the one without the text. I think having it there makes the wallpaper too busy.

The colours look much better now, although it's highlighted some extraction flaws. It should be easy to fix though. There's a small bit that needs working on where the bottom of his nose meets his face. Also there's some bits of hair that look a tiny bit jaggedy, as does the stamp where it's been extracted. If you sort those out it'll make your wall look even cleaner.

There's not really much else I can see apart from what I've told you already. Good luck with the changes!"

"Everyone's given some good advice, I just wanted to put what I thought.

Ok the swirly's you added to the corner don't fit with the rest of the wall. Their purpose there is correct but it shouldn't be so dark and disjointed from everything else. What I would suggest is using either the circles brush or the flowers brush up there and making it the lighter green and more faint. That way it won't drag your eye away from the rest of the wallpaper and it'll fit in with the theme.

I don't agree with getting rid of the circles that cover him. I think that they look good although maybe making just the dark green ones a shade lighter will help they eye back to the focus of the character. If you get rid of them completely then I fear your wallpaper would look too plain and not work as well.

Your character is still looking too blurry especially next to the original. Like ~zazou8888 said use the scan from the second version with the texture from the latest. The contrast in the second scan is a lot better than the first but it isn't anywhere near as blurry as in the latest.

Also I don't agree with adding text. I personally feel it would over complicate things and not really fit in too well. It looks fine without text.

My First Wall

"I don't mean to sound negative but a lot of work needs to be done on this wallpaper before you submit it.

Lets start with the main issue... It's far too plain/minimal to be accepted into the gallery as it is now. It kinda just gives the impression that no effort was put into making the wallpaper, although I'm sure it was. I think the first thing you need to do is come up with an idea for a more interesting background for this wall. You can still keep it minimal but it really needs shapes, or colour or something (not just a gradient though!).

My second issue is the extraction, although it's hard to tell is any of the background is remaining, it's clear that some of the lines have been eaten away. Especially on Haruhi's left arm and Mikuru's arm. AP are super strict on extraction so try and get this as perfect as you can ^_^

I'm personally not that fond of the text either. Maybe because it makes the wallpaper seem like it's in two separate sections which doesn't really make it flow. Maybe it's a good idea to leave this out and spend more time working on getting that background more interesting.

The final thing I'm going to mention is your sig. I normally place them at the very bottom so the task bar would cover them up. AP won't accept this into the gallery without one so keep that in mind before you submit it.

Good luck with the changes, I'm sure you'll be able to make a wonderful wall out of that image with enough time and effort! I also apologise if I seemed harsh on my crit x"

"Now Asa has mentioned it I can also see Pacman circly thing! It looks a bit odd, so you should probably look into changing it.

I'm not sure I'm fond of the new version. It's now far too busy! I'm not sure what you should remove maybe the new "sparkles" in the background I don't think they look that good if I'm honest.

I do however like the swirly bits around the character but they just don't blend that well. Maybe you should make them glow some more, they are a bit too dull at the moment which makes them look flat. It would make it fit in with the glowyness of the rest of the wallpaper.

Also along the right side of the wallpaper it looks like you haven't lined up one of your layer blends properly as there is like a 1-2 pixel section where everything is a lot darker. It shouldn't be too hard to fix, but it looks a bit odd there right now.

"I prefer the second version more than the first :) The extra lines and circles in the background add a lot more depth.

I can't really see what Sumiru means about the hair either O_o;; It just looks like it been sketched in a pencil which to me is just the way it's been drawn.

I personally don't think the speach bubble goes... Maybe you should make it slightly transparent? Just to soften it up a little and make it fit with the scan more...

Oh and I personally prefer sigs that are covered by the task bar, but that's more personal preference so moving it is up to you :)
