This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

How many hours do you think an Anime characters prepared his/her hairstyles?

1 year 11 months ago

"I've seen some people pull it off. There was a guy back at my high school that did Cloud's hair well, and I've seen a picture of a boy who got Sora's hairstyle PERFECTLY for a cosplay. Otherwise, I think it's rather difficult. It's something you either have to do well for it to look good or just settle for a "realistic" version, which I think can look just as good."

Anime Conventions, do you go to them?

2 years 3 months ago

"I went to Otakon in Baltimore, MD last year and I'm going again this year. 25,000 people, so it's a big convention. As far as I know, it's the biggest on the east coast. I've always wanted to go to the one in California though. I've also heard AnimeNorth in Canada is good.

I went to a very small convention call Ikasucon in Cincinnatti, OH, but it sucked horribly. It was too small to be any good, and regrettably I paid $20 to get in and left an hour after arriving. The only thing I got out of it was a few anime OSTs."

"Kino's Journey/Travels is rather different, but it's very deep and thought-provoking. It's got some action, some mystery, little romance. I rather love the series.

It looks like it's already been mentioned, but I've been told Samurai 7 is good though I haven't gotten around to watching it yet."

Metaphors in Anime.Manga.Games

I don't really have too much to add, but a lil' general fact about some of anime, but especially RPGs. It's quite common to see the ultimate villain/final boss in a story portrayed as some kind of god (self-proclaimed in most cases). Our heroes are always on a quest to save the world from this "god" by defeating them in an epic final battle.

This ironic good vs. evil theme is something we see often, and tends to see the good, represented by the heroes who are usually bounty hunters, mercenaries, thieves, and other such less-honourable professions, against the more arrogant, but higher social class, better educated (and usually white-haired) smart guy who has found a path to "ultimate power". Deities, god-like beings are portrayed as evil ones quite alot.

I'm guessing that most story writers are atheists, or just enjoy pocking sticks at religious concepts in general ?:X

Not only that, but organized religion can paradoxically be restricting. One is encouraged to follow a specific set a beliefs when typically a person finds more liberation is branching out and finding his or her own variation or completely seperate set of beliefs altogether. I think the matephors covered in the protagonist versus evil god figure is mankind's goal to find power and be freed from those who seek to control us and take away our free will. I find that the typical good versus evil battle in Japanese RPGs seem to be the protagonists' way of becoming their own gods and rising up to believe what is truly right in their hearts as opposed to believing what forced upon them in their society."

Couples that never came to be

2 years 6 months ago

"Ramna 1/2 - Despite the huge amount of crap everyone went through, surprisingly Ranma and Akane never hooked up in the end. I was very sad.

Escaflowne - I sort of feel like Hitomi and Van never really hooked up. It was obvious that loved each other, but at the very least they could've kissed at least!

Trigun - Vash and Meryl. This was a couple I really wanted to see get together, but I'm also glad they didn't since Vash obviousy had a lot to deal with before he could ever hope to have a relationship."

Metaphors in Anime.Manga.Games

2 years 6 months ago

"Many Japanese stories out there, be them anime, manga, or video game, seem to have some very deep metaphors hidden within them. For example, this was very difficult to catch, but in Neon Genesis Evangelion, the leader of Seele was actually a man who had betrayed Christ, and for his betrayal, God cursed him to life forever, hence why Seele was so desperate to complete the Eva series and initiate third impact, both pieces of his goal to unify all life forms into one being so that he may stop existing as he was; his body was aging and crumbling, and he forced to live through it.

Final Fantasy VII, the game, had many little hints in it to its secret storyline. For instance, the wrecked airships and skyscrapers at the dig sight implied that the FFVII world was the future of our world, since they were similar to the planes and building we have now. Metaphorically in the story itself, the Ancients represented Jews and Sephiroth’s role in the story can be found to be rather poetic and ironic, as the Sephiroth Tree is eternal in life and ties into the Promised Land, in Judaism beliefs. (I’m not an expert on the religion, so don’t quote me.)

To the point, what are metaphors you have noticed and in what stories? What do your favorite stories symbolize, and what are their hidden messages?"

What was your first anime?

2 years 6 months ago

"Although Speed Racer was the first anime I ever saw, Sailormoon was the first one I really liked. I used to watch Toonami all the time back when I elementary and middle school, although I didn't find out they were actually Japanese cartoons until later. And Sailormoon continues to remain as one of my favorites (the manga preferred over the anime by far)."

...to some extent I agree. But "natural progression of our culture"? That's a bit too pessimistic. Admittedly most people still watch anime as a pure entertainment-->get out of reality once in a while, and the market provides that, it's pure economics: sex sells, to those who have low expectations. Yes I do find anime/manga plotline getting recycled more and more, especially if you read the shounen jump ones O_o, but fans ARE forgettful (most of them anyway), that's why the "magical girl" for shoujyo and "hero beats the super big villain" shounen themes can go on forever -_-

But Death Note is a shounen jumo series that I found surprisingly...deep, much more than other ones serialized on the same magazine. Now that's ORIGINAL, yes?

Rather than the anime itself, i would say the anime's ops and eds are getting super repetetive. It's so hard to find an op or ed that actually fits the series anymore, most of the time it's just a place for new singers to get some publicity. The one recent series that I found with BOTH fitting op and ed is LOVELESS, and both are composed by Kajiura Yuuki.

I don't know how that statement is pessimistic. Culture's naturally evolve, and it's a fact that sex is advertising, TV, and film has become considerably more prominent.

No one's disputing that there are original series out there; we're just not talking about them. Ops and eds? I'm assuming you mean "openings" and "endings"? I usually don't pay them too much mind. They're great 'n all, but if they're getting repetitive, it doesn't bother me. It doesn't make the series. *shrug*"

Well, I think there are a couple of factors at work here. First of all, it has to do with your personal growth as a fan. The more anime you see, the less easily impressed you are, and the more it seems as if you've exhausted all the good anime out there. If two series of the same type/genre/whatever are released in different time periods, and you see the earlier one first, chances are that you'll be much less awed by the second. That's just life. It's why some claim that RahXephon (an excellent series) is a rip-off of Evangelion (another excellent series). It's why some claim that the golden age of anime was in the 70s or the 80s or the 90s, and that nothing good has come out of Japan since then.

As you become more familiar with anime, you have to work harder to find the good stuff. The nice news is that there's a plethora of good stuff out there. And once you've seen a lot of anime, it's pretty easy to figure out your basic likes and dislikes. If ecchi isn't your thing, fine. Trust me, you shouldn't experience any difficulty finding good anime without ecchi content.

A very good point, and one no one has mentioned yet. I agree to some extent. Plus I'm a film major, and I know I tend to be rather critical. However, I still find good series to watch. I think Arina Tanemura's stories are getting better as she goes along, and I find I like the new one more than the last as she develops them. I don't think I'm completely biased for that reason, but I don't necessarily think the golden age of anime was in the past. However, you have to admit that with the progression of our culture, sex appeal in advertising is growing as well as what's allowed to be seen on the television. Now people can say "bitch" and "shit" on TV and get awat with it without bleeping. I don't think anime is exempt from the natural progression of our culture."

What I do think is that some people have to start watching animes based on good feedback and reviews and not on imagery and what the perv crowd is saying ...

There are a lot more titles without echiness than with, just because a person is watching only the ones with it, it dosen't mean it's all there is to it ¬¬

I agree, but for the most part, people are just going to watch what they want to watch. Many of the more "mainstream" titles have some ecchi, which is why we're discussing it.

Here's a question: many of you have said that you don't mind anime with ecchi in it, but would you mind if it was taken out?"

Eh? Well I watch a lot of anime, A lot of anime. Ecchi makes the anime funny, sometimes. But any sport anime is a bond between a team, and they're sport. Or Action and Adventure series, One Piece, Naruto or Bleach, they're plot lines are good and still going strong. I don't know what your watching, true, Sex Appeal catches my eye, but It doesn't determine if I'm going to like the series or not.

Ecchi doesn’t determine whether I like the series or not either. Hell, I draw hentai and ecchi as well as other drawings that have nothing to do with perversion. My point is that ecchi is going up and plotlines seem to be more recycled these days. Whether these two things are related, I can’t say, but it is true that it’s happening at the same time.

I have no problem with ecchi. It’s funny and not outside my personal boundaries. What I am noticing is that it seems to be getting a little overplayed and redundant. Some series it adds to, but the surplus seems to be a little over the top.

CodeWordChobits
It seems to me that you don't have alot of anime experience and may be basing what you believe only on what is in the mainstream. What is in the main stream? (at least with US viewers) Echii, shounen fighter shows, (the long shows thing is more atributable to marketing... more eps = more money from an american licence) tend to be what you hear about from the average fan on the street. They generally do not have the resources alot of us have that spend time on the net and consider Anime to be more of a hobby. So considering the hundreds of show out there, I don't really think that it is getting any worse than it has been all along.

Well yes the more mainstream stuff is what’s popular, therefore more people are going to relate to it as a topic. I happen to like a lot of non-maintream anime/manga, like Kino’s Journey (#1 fav) and Arina Tanemura’s Shinshi Doumei Cross. However, even in the lesser mainstream stories like Arina Tanemura’s Full Moon wo Sagashite, the plotline seemed a little recycled near the end. Then again, she doesn’t prefer to do fantasy storylines, which may play a part. My point is less about how much ecchi is booming and more about how REALLY great stories seem to be becoming less common, and they’re recycling the really popular ones, like Naruto, Inu-Yasha, Sailormoon, Evangelian, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, etc. etc. Once again, I only noted that ecchi getting more popular and plotlines dropping was happening at the same time. I don’t think ecchi is completely to blame for it, but I’m sure it plays a role.

MythDrannor
Umm...If you all can't find anime that is based on storyline and character development then your not looking very hard. First off, theres plenty of original things in anime, the problem is that anime itself has become normal to so many people that the originalness has worn thin. Second, if you think that theres nothing noteworthy being produced right now, theres decades of anime I bet you've never seen. Go and watch some of the more esoteric and less known anime; Jin-Roh, Banner of Stars, Betterman, Venus Wars, things like that...

I believe I clearly noted that there are some great storylines out there now in my very first post. Just because I don’t name them all, which is completely subjective to begin with, doesn’t mean I don’t have stories I like. u.u

PaladinBlue
Originality doesn't make an anime good, nor does unoriginality make one bad.

That’s not the point. It’s not whether a story’s been used before that makes it original. It’s how the story is portrayed and developed that makes it original. For instance, there are crapload of android stories out there; some of them are overplayed and cliché, but some of them are awesome. It’s not the plot, it’s what you do with it that makes a story original.

astroace222
Third, the US is getting lame with idea's, so its' no surprise to me that the rest of the worlds catching the US infection and becoming lazy with idea's. I mean they made a Sequal to BAMBI for Fu**** sakes. IT's not needed but hey there may be $$ signs in it for them so..........

I have to say I agree. I think it did start with the U.S. and maybe Japan is just following suit. They may be working less hard while attempting to make the same amount or more money.

Lastly, I’ll agree with the fan service. Final Fantasy X-2 was completely fan service. I rented the game and wasn’t interested enough to play it past an hour. A friend told me the entire plot, and I was very disappointed."

"Now, I'm not a huge anime fan-goer. I love anime, but I just don't have the money to buy every new series that comes out, so don't expect this to be "professional" information. It's just my opinion.

It just seems anime is getting a bit more... redundant. I see less orginal and/or well done plotlines and more ecchi and drawn out episodes to fill a more empty series. Not to say that there aren't some GREAT stories out there... just many of them seem to be recycled. Lets not forget how long the Dragon Ball series was dragged on for, live action Sailormoon AFTER a 200 episode anime series, the re-released Evangelian series, FFVII Advent Children rather lacking plotline and recycled villians (no offense to you FF fans out there), and also no offense to you Naruto fans but it takes FOREVER for anything to get done in that series. I just wonder if maybe people are starting to run out of ideas in the creative world? At least it seems tha way in the mainstream. Generally speaking, plotlines are just getting more redundant it seems. There really hasn't been any anime that's awed me and captured my heart for a while. Maybe it's just me. What do you guys think?

(Note: no fans were meant to be offended by this post. Please be nice ^^'')"

Dubs that *gasp* dont suck?!?!

2 years 8 months ago

"Although I usually perfer the original Japanese voices with subtitles, lots of anime can have good dubbing. FLCL, Trigun... Although the sexy bishounen voices for Houshin Engi (Soul Hunter) were irresistible, the dubbing was actually funnier; the voice actors made their own unique comments which actually fit with the story. I perfer the dubbed version of DBZ though because Goku and Gohan's original voices are so high-pitched I can't stand it.

Game dubbing tends to be pretty good too. Xenosaga was well done. Final Fantasy X was pretty good too, although I'll never get over the fact that the same guy who did Tidus' voice also does Fry from Matt Groening's Futurama. O.o;;"

what do u think of full moon wo sagashite

2 years 8 months ago

"I have only read the manga. I own the entire anime on DVD, but have yet to watch it. I'm a big Arina Tanemura fan, and the series is good for the most part. The only thing I didn't like was that Takuto had the same condition (the throat tumor) as Mitsuki. I thought there could have been more variety in that department, but otherwise the story is really good. Arina doesn't like doing fantasy stories and is pressured to by Ribon, so maybe Shinshi Doumei Cross will be better since she seems to be puttng more heart into it."
